Chemical And Toxicological Characterization Of The Upper York River, Virginia The Mattaponi And Pamunkey Rivers, Morris H. Roberts Jr., Mark Richards, Peter F. Delisle

Reports

This study describes the most extensive effort to characterize the chemistry, toxicology and community of the sediments of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers. This was accomplished using a study design modified to expand the number of stations occupied by reducing the cost of analyses by compositing replicate samples collected from each study site rather than performing toxicity tests on these samples individually. In previous studies, the variability in field replicate samples was equivalent to the variability in laboratory replicates. This design has long been used to analyze samples for various chemical contaminants as a cost savings endeavor. More ....

Evaluating And Enhancing The Success Of Oyster Reef Restoration: The Effects Of Habitat Complexity On Oyster Survival, Mark W. Luckenbach, Paige G. Ross Dec 2004

Evaluating And Enhancing The Success Of Oyster Reef Restoration: The Effects Of Habitat Complexity On Oyster Survival, Mark W. Luckenbach, Paige G. Ross

Reports

We evaluated the progress of several oyster restoration efforts of varying ages in three tidal tributaries of Chesapeake Bay, the Rappahannock, the Piankatank and Great Wicomoco rivers. In 2003 and 2004, we determined the density, biomass and size frequency distribution of oyster populations on the reefs during spring, summer and fall. Recruitment of oysters to the reefs was quantified using standardized substrates deployed and retrieved from the reef surfaces on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule from May through November. The prevalence and intensity of the oyster pathogens Perkinsus marinus and Haplosporidium nelsoni in oysters on the reefs was determined from …

Real-Time Pcr For Detection And Quantification Of The Protistan Parasite Perkinsus Marinus In Environmental Waters, Corinne Audemard, Kimberly S. Reece, Em Burreson Nov 2004

Real-Time Pcr For Detection And Quantification Of The Protistan Parasite Perkinsus Marinus In Environmental Waters, Corinne Audemard, Kimberly S. Reece, Em Burreson

VIMS Articles

The protistan parasite Perkinsus marinus is a severe pathogen of the oyster Crassostrea virginica along the east coast of the United States. Very few data have been collected, however, on the abundance of the parasite in environmental waters, limiting our understanding of P. marinus transmission dynamics. Real-time PCR assays with SybrGreen I as a label for detection were developed in this study for quantification of P. marinus in environmental waters with P. marinus species-specific primers and of Perkinsus spp. with Perkinsus genus-specific primers. Detection of DNA concentrations as low as the equivalent of 3.3 x 10(-2) cell per 10-mul reaction …

The Value Of Created Dunes To Address Coastal Hazards In Chesapeake Bay: Hurricane Isabel Impacts, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, Travis R. Comer Nov 2004

The Value Of Created Dunes To Address Coastal Hazards In Chesapeake Bay: Hurricane Isabel Impacts, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, Travis R. Comer

Reports

Perhaps the most important function of a created dune, from some perspectives, is coastal protection. Since the initiation of this subtask within the overall Chesapeake Bay Dune Monitoring and Management Analysis project, Hurricane Isabel impacted the coastal plain of Virginia and significantly altered almost all Bay shorelines to one degree or another. This is particularly true of shorelines facing north, east, and south since the winds shifted as the storm passed. The original task scope has changed slightly as a result of Isabel’s passage since it was such a significant storm event and provided an opportunity to show how dunes …

Parasitism In Species Of Bathymodiolus (Bivalvia : Mytilidae) Mussels From Deep-Sea Seep And Hydrothermal Vents, Me Ward, Jeffrey D. Shields, Cl Van Dover Nov 2004

Parasitism In Species Of Bathymodiolus (Bivalvia : Mytilidae) Mussels From Deep-Sea Seep And Hydrothermal Vents, Me Ward, Jeffrey D. Shields, Cl Van Dover

VIMS Articles

Bivalve species, especially mussels, are biomass dominants in many deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems. As in shallow-water environments, parasites are likely to be important factors in the population dynamics of bivalve communities in chemosynthetic ecosystems, but there has been little study of parasitism in deep-sea seep or vent molluscs. In this study, Parasite types, diversity, prevalence, infection density and non-infectious indicators of stress or disease as related to host age, reproductive condition, and endosymbiont density were assessed in mussels (Bathmodiolus heckerae) from 2 seep sites and mussels (B. puteoserpentis) from 2 vent sites. We identified 10 microbial or parasitic agents in histological …

Dinitrogen Fixation And Release Of Ammonium And Dissolved Organic Nitrogen By Trichodesmium Ims101, Mr Mulholland, Da Bronk, Dg Capone

VIMS Articles

Two methods used to measure dinitrogen (N-2) fixation (acetylene reduction and N-15(2) uptake) often result in different N-2 fixation rates. Part of the discrepancy may arise from the observation that Trichodesmium can release a fraction of their recently fixed N-2 as dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and/or ammonium (NH4+). To resolve outstanding issues regarding N-2 fixation and the production of dissolved combined nitrogen (N) by Trichodesmium, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of N-2 fixation and the production of DON and NH4+ in cultures of Trichodesmium IMS101. We performed N-15(2) uptake experiments in parallel with acetylene (C2H2) reduction assays, and measured production …

Analysis Of Chaos-Induced Pulse Trains In The Ionization Of Hydrogen, K. A. Mitchell, J. P. Handley, B. Tighe, A. Flower, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

We examine excitation (by a short laser pulse) of a hydrogen atom in parallel electric and magnetic fields, from an initial tightly bound state to a state above the classical ionization threshold. We predict that the atom ionizes by emitting a train of electron pulses. This prediction is based on the classical dynamics of electron escape. In particular, the pulse train is due to classical chaos, which occurs for nonvanishing magnetic field. We connect the structure of the pulse train to fractal structure in the escape dynamics, and discuss several issues of experimental interest, with a particular emphasis on understanding …

Temporal Variability Of Delta C-14, Delta C-13, And C/N In Sinking Particulate Organic Matter At A Deep Time Series Station In The Northeast Pacific Ocean, J Hwang, Erm Druffel, S Griffin, Kl Smith, Rj Baldwin, Je Bauer

VIMS Articles

A 6-year time series of Delta(14) C, delta(13) C, and C/N measurements in deep sinking particulate organic matter ( POM) is presented for an abyssal site, Station M in the northeast Pacific Ocean. The Delta(14)C values revealed that sinking POM at 3450 m depth ( 650 m above bottom) contained old carbon despite its presumed short transit time in the water column. The isotopic and chemical properties of the sinking POM varied with time and appear to be controlled by more than one major process. In 1993, 1994, and late 1996, isotopic signatures and C/N molar ratios indicate negligible or …

Infection Dynamics Of Marteilia Refringens In Flat Oyster Ostrea Edulis And Copepod Paracartia Grani In A Claire Pond Of Marennes-Oleron Bay, Corinne Audemard, Mc Sajus, Et Al Oct 2004

Infection Dynamics Of Marteilia Refringens In Flat Oyster Ostrea Edulis And Copepod Paracartia Grani In A Claire Pond Of Marennes-Oleron Bay, Corinne Audemard, Mc Sajus, Et Al

VIMS Articles

The protozoan parasite Marteilia refringens has been partly responsible for the severe decrease in the production of the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis Linnaeus in France since the 1970s. The calanoid copepod Paracartia grani Sars was recently found to be a host for M refringens in French shallow-water oyster ponds ('claires'). This study reconsidered M refringens transmission dynamics in the light of this finding, taking into account not only oyster infection dynamics and environmental factors but also data concerning the copepod host. P. grani population dynamics in the claire under study revealed that this species is the dominant planktonic copepod …

Ultrastructure Of Mycobacterium Marinum Granuloma In Striped Bass Morone Saxatilis, Dt Gauthier, Wolfgang K. Vogelbein, Ca Ottinger

VIMS Articles

An emerging epizootic of mycobacteriosis currently threatens striped bass Morone saxatilis populations in Chesapeake Bay, USA. Several species of mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium marinum, species resembling AT. avium, All. gordonae, M. peregrinum, M. scrofulaceum and M. terrae, and the new species M. shottsii have been isolated from diseased and healthy bass. In this study, we describe the ultrastructure of developing M. marinum granulomas in experimentally infected bass over a period of 45 wk. The primary host response to injected mycobacteria was formation of large macrophage aggregations containing phagocytosed bacilli. AT marinum were always contained within phagosomes. Close association of lysosomes with …

Isolation And Characterization Of Mycobacteria From Striped Bass Morone Saxatilis From The Chesapeake Bay, Mw Rhodes, H Kator, I Kaattari, D Gautier, Wolfgang K. Vogelbein, Ca Ottinger

VIMS Articles

Mycobacteriosis in striped bass Morone saxatilis of Chesapeake Bay, USA, was first diagnosed in 1997 based on the presence of granulomatous inflammation and acid-fast bacteria in skin and spleen. To confirm histopathology, bacteriological detection and identification of mycobacteria were begun using splenic tissue from fish with and without skin ulcerations. On the basis of initial studies using a variety of selective and nonselective media, decontamination, homogenization and incubation conditions, a simple and quantitative recovery method using aseptic necropsy of splenic tissue was developed. Optimal recovery was obtained by spread-plating homogenates on Middlebrook 7H10 agar with incubation for 3 mo at …

Online Support For Teacher Induction, Judi Harris

School of Education Articles

Despite demonstrated benefits of mentoring programs for new teachers, nationally, more educators leave the profession each year than join it. Online support systems can help novice and experienced teachers overcome many of the limitations inherent in traditional mentoring programs. Used in combination with other online tools and resources, “e-mentoring” may help reduce the rate of teacher attrition while enhancing educators’ professional success.

Estimating Relative Abundance Of Young Of Year American Eel, Anguilla Rostrata, In The Virginia Tributaries Of Chesapeake Bay. Final Report (2003 Reporting Year), Marcel M. Montane, Hank Brooks, Wendy A. Lowery, Aimee D. Halvorson

Reports

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) adopted the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (hereafter referred to as FMP) for the American Eel in November 1999. The FMP focuses on increasing the state’s efforts to collect data on the resource and the fishery it supports through both fishery-dependent and fishery-independent studies. To this end, member jurisdictions (including Virginia) agreed to implement an annual abundance survey for young of year (YOY) American eels. The survey is intended to “…characterize trends in annual recruitment of the young of year eels over time [to produce a] qualitative appraisal of the annual recruitment of American …
