Degradation rates of benzene, p-xylene, naphthalene, and o-dichlorobenzene have been measured in a heterogeneous, unconfined aquifer during a pulse injection experiment at Columbus Air Force Base, Columbus, Mississippi. Dissolved oxygen in the pulse plume maintained aerobic conditions. Degradation kinetics calculated from the complete field data set were approximately first order with the following rate constants: benzene, 0.0070 d-1; p-xylene, 0.0107 d-1; naphthalene, 0.0064 d-1; and o-dichlorobenzene, 0.0046 d-1. Reaction rates were also calculated from a near-field subset of the data using a model based on the hydrologic characteristics of the aquifer. Shapes of the degradation rate curves were consistent with …

Abundances of chroococcoid cyanobacteria and heterotrophic bacteria in surface waters of the York River subestuary covary with spring-neap tidally induced changes in the mixed-layer depth. Abundances of their principal grazers, heterotrophic protists, however, do not oscillate. A simulation model of this system using nonlinear, density-dependent functions has been developed to replicate cycles observed in the two bacterial abundances and simulate bacterial production and protistan grazing. A Jassby-Plan equation is used to determine growth rate from the mean mixed-layer light and empirically derived growth and a parameters. Changes in mixed-layer depth regulate light availability, thereby controlling cyanobacterial growth rates. The model …

Order And Chaos In Semiconductor Microstructures, W. A. Lin, John B. Delos, Robert E. Jensen

The semiclassical theory of ballistic electron transport in semiconductor microstructures provides a description of the quantum conductance fluctuations in terms of the classical distributions for the lengths and directed areas of the scattering trajectories. Because the classical dynamics differs for integrable (circular) and chaotic (stadium) scattering domains, experimental measurements of the conductance of these microstructures provide a unique probe of the quantum properties of classically regular and chaotic systems. To advance these theoretical and experimental studies we compare geometrical formulas for the classical distributions of lengths and areas with numerical simulations for microstructures examined in recent experiments, we assess the …

he relationship of potential defense-related cellular and humoral activities and the sus- ceptibility of eastern oysters Crassostrea virginica to the parasite Perkinsus marinus were examined at 10, 15, 20 and 25 "C. Oysters were acclimated at experimental temperatures for 20 d and then chal- lenged with R marinus. Total hemocyte counts (TC) and percentage of granulocytes (PG) 20 d after temperature acclimation were higher in oysters at high than at low acclimation temperature. Higher protein (P) and lysozyme (L) concentrations were found in oysters at 10 and 15 "C. No significant differ- ences in hemagglutination (H) titers due to temperature …

Recent stock assessments indicate that the shark stock of the western North Atlantic is exploited at a rate twice the maximum sustainable yield. This finding is supported by data generated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science longline program for sharks of the. Chesapeake Bay and adjacent coastal waters. Trends in catch per unit of effort since 1974 indicate 60-80% reductions in population size for the common species - sandbar (Carcharhinus plumbeus) , dusky (C. obscurus) , sand tiger (Odontaspis taurus), and tiger (Galeocerdo cuvier) sharks. Declines include numbers of individuals for all species, size classes within species, and in …

Photoabsorption Spectra Of Atoms In Parallel Electric And Magnetic Fields, J. M. Mao, K. A. Rapelje, S. J. Blodgett-Ford, John B. Delos, A. König, H. Rinneberg

Measurements have been made of the absorption spectrum of Ba from the 6s6p 1P1 level to states near the ionization threshold in parallel electric and magnetic fields. The absorption spectrum shows oscillations superposed on a smooth background. Each oscillation is correlated with a closed orbit of the electron. At strong electric fields, trajectories are regular, and closed orbits form orderly patterns. For weak electric fields, trajectories are chaotic, and many more closed orbits are present. Many of these are produced by bifurcations as the electric field is reduced.

Virginia Beach Offshore Sediment Study, C. R. Berquist Jr., Naomi Gomillion
Reports
This investigation was initiated from discussions among members of the Minerals Management Service-Virginia Task Force in an effort to locate a nearby and offshore source of beach-quality sand for the resort strip at Virginia Beach. Because of the increasing difficulty of relying upon land-based material, attention has been focused on investigating offshore sources. Previous work (Kimball and others, 1991) suggests an offshore deposit of beach-quality sands is located on a shoal between 3 and 8 km east of Sandbridge. Planned vibracoring on this shoal during the fall of 1993 should establish the viability of the sand occurrence. Although material from …

Data Report : Hypoxia In The James River, 1992, G. M. Sisson, A. Y. Kuo, Bruce Neilson, Nancy C. Wilson
Reports
As part of the hypoxia program of the Virginia Chesapeake Bay Initiatives, the Department of Physical Sciences of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducted a series of measurements around the mouth of the James River estuary. The measurements were made in the summer of 1992. Two types of measurements were conducted: measurements at moored stations and measurements by slackwater surveys. The former collected data for investigation of dissolved oxygen (DO) variation, and associated physical parameters, in an intratidal time scale, as well as for studying the vertical distributions of the measured parameters. The latter collected data for spatial …

Water Quality In Chesapeake Bay : Virginia Portion, Water Year 1992 : A Report To The Virginia Department Of Environmental Quality, Kevin Curling, Rodney Jackson, Bruce Neilson
Reports
The Chesapeake Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program (WQMP) has three main objectives: (1) characterization of water quality conditions, (2) detection of temporal trends in water q1llality, and (3) crr.ation of a data base that furthers our understanding of the proceses that control water quality in the Chesapeake Bay system. The purpose of this report is to characterize water quality conditions in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay during the 1992 water year, which runs from October 1991 through September 1992. These monitoring efforts have been conducted with funding from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

"In working on an edition of Swinburne's correspondence, I have in the last several years discovered two previously unknown poems by Algernon Charles Swinburne. One has existed for decades in the British Library's Ashley Collection, unrecognized probably because it survives in the form of a copy not in Swinburne's hand. The other, a signed holograph which I bought from a bookseller in Texas, has a provenance that is unknown. Swinburne appears to have wanted to publish both, though circumstances in each case made that infeasible..."
