Factors Affecting Persistence Of Re-Entry Women At An Urban State University, Carolyn Sheriff Mayfield Jan 1989

Factors Affecting Persistence Of Re-Entry Women At An Urban State University, Carolyn Sheriff Mayfield

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that affect the persistence of re-entry women over age twenty-five at an urban state university using Vincent Tinto's academic-social fit theory of retention and persistence which posits that once this fit is achieved, persistence and retention will be positively affected.;The re-entry women's population at Urban State University, an historically black university, was studied. It was chosen because of its mission of serving special populations, its size, its historical prominence, and its location in an urban community.;Urban State University had an available pool of eighty-eight women over age twenty-five who were …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Race And Gender And National Student Placement In Programs For The Educable Mentally Retarded, Learning-Disabled, And Seriously Emotionally Disturbed From 1976 Through 1984, Robert Frederick Richardson Jr.

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Both prior to and since the passage of 94-142 in 1975, researchers and policy analysts have raised consistent concerns about the overrepresentation of black males in EMR and ED programs, especially in view of an often noted disproportion of white males in LD programs.;All of the empirical research on overrepresentation since 1975 has been characterized by one or more of the following limitations: (a) Small sample populations were drawn from one school district or state, (b) Larger samples, when studied, were analyzed at one specific point in time rather than over a period of time, (c) The power of the …

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Cycling Strategies In Two Tidal Freshwater Macrophytes, Peltandra Virginica And Spartina Cynosuroides, Paul Milton. Booth Jr Jan 1989

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Cycling Strategies In Two Tidal Freshwater Macrophytes, Peltandra Virginica And Spartina Cynosuroides, Paul Milton. Booth Jr

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Monotypic stands of the macrophytes Peltandra virginica and Spartina cynosuroides, which shared a common boundary, were studied at Sweethall Marsh, a tidal freshwater marsh located on the Pamunkey River within the Chesapeake Bay estuarine system, Virginia. Compartmental models indicate that both Peltandra and Spartina take up, internally cycle, and release to the environment, significant levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Models also suggest that Peltandra and Spartina and their associated sediment compartments are capable of regulating nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes through their uptake and storage capacity. Nitrogen use efficiency was significantly higher in the shoots and roots of Spartina compared to …

Effects Of Selected Nitrogen-Containing Aromatic Compounds (Ncacs) On Physiological Properties In Escherichia Coli, W. James Catallo Iii Jan 1989

Effects Of Selected Nitrogen-Containing Aromatic Compounds (Ncacs) On Physiological Properties In Escherichia Coli, W. James Catallo Iii

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This research examined the effects of quinoline and 4-azafluorene on respiratory electron transport rate (ET), outer membrane permeability and topology, oxygen consumption, and viable cell density in Escherichia coli cell suspensions. ET was estimated spectrophotometrically using INT (2-(p-iodophenyl)-3-(p-nitrophenyl)-5-(phenyl)-2H-tetrazolium chloride, which is reduced in vivo to a red colored formazan (INTF). Both test compounds caused anomalous dose-response behavior in INT assays: in a defined window of doses, ET rates near or above the controls were observed. These doses showed altered INT reduction kinetics, decreased cellular oxygen demand, and decreased viable cell densities. Experiments with E. coli spheroplast preparations, gram(+) cells, and …

Adaptation Of Lr Parsing To Production System Interpretation, Louis Paul Slothouber Jan 1989

Adaptation Of Lr Parsing To Production System Interpretation, Louis Paul Slothouber

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This thesis presents such a new production system architecture, called a palimpsest parser, that adapts LR parsing technology to the process of controlled production system interpretation. Two unique characteristics of this architecture facilitate the construction and execution of large production systems: the rate at which productions fire is independent of production system size, and the modularity inherent in production systems is preserved and enhanced. In addition, individual productions may be evaluated in either a forward or backward direction, production systems can be integrated with other production systems and procedural programs, and production system modules can be compiled into libraries and …
