Modern & Classical Languages
This collection of thirteen papers from the Seventh Colloquium on Hispanic Linguistics (1980) is the fourth published by Georgetown University. As in the three previous volumes, the reports in this one represent slightly over half of those presented. Unlike previous published proceedings, the present one deals with aspects of a single theme. Interesting hypotheses are forwarded concerning the relationship between social factors and history of Spanish language acquisition, bilingualism, and Spanish and Portuguese phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon.

Austro-German Liberalism And The Modern Liberal Tradition, Harry Ritter
Austro-German Liberalism And The Modern Liberal Tradition, Harry Ritter
History Faculty and Staff Publications
In a widely-cited essay on turn-of-the century Vienna, Carl Schorske alludes to the"dissolution of the classical liberal view of man in the crucible of Austria's modern politics .... [and] the emergence of psychological man from the wreckage of the old culture."' The theme of liberal decline has provided Schorske with the backdrop for several important articles on late nineteenth century Austria, and a number of interesting monographs. Relatively few historical studies, however, address the subject of Austrian liberalism per se, and those which do are mostly broad surveys.

Spectral Properties Of Selfadjoint Ordinary Differential Operators With An Indefinite Weight Function, Branko Ćurgus, H. Langer
Spectral Properties Of Selfadjoint Ordinary Differential Operators With An Indefinite Weight Function, Branko Ćurgus, H. Langer
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Spectral properties of the equation l (f ) - λrf = 0 with an indefinite weight function r are studied in LI2rl . The main tool is the theory of definitizable operators in Krein spaces. Under special assumptions on the weight function, for the operator associated with the problem, the regularity of the critical point infinity is proved. Some relations to full- and half-range expansions are indicated.
Interhabitat Differences In Energy Acquisition And Expenditure In A Lizard, Roger A. Anderson
Interhabitat Differences In Energy Acquisition And Expenditure In A Lizard, Roger A. Anderson
Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
Cnemidophorus hyperythrus, a small (≈4-g) teiid lizard, occurs along an elevational thorn scrub—thorn woodland—thorn forest habitat gradient in the cape region of Baja California. We compared body size, daily energy expenditure (DEE, measured with doubly labeled water), relative feeding rate (as reflected by H2O influx rate), behavior, and abundance of this species at two sites along the gradient. At the inland thorn woodland site C hyperythrus were more abundant (≈100 lizards/ha) than at the thorn scrub site near the ocean (≈50 lizards/ha). Mean body mass of woodland site lizards was 13% greater than that of scrub lizards. The …

The American-States And The Age Of School Systems, John G. Richardson
The American-States And The Age Of School Systems, John G. Richardson
Sociology
This paper advances a series of propositions outlining a model of educational change in American state school systems. It is argued that the enactment of compulsory school attendance laws marks the formal beginning of a state school system and determines a system's institutional and practical development and change. Once the previously unassociated parts of a state's educational system are linked, an institution is formed that, in part, undergoes self-generating change. Numerous aspects of this system are measurable, and the statistics that result reflect its development and progress. State school systems must mature sufficiently before they are able to review their …
Settlement-Patterns And The Governing Structures Of 19th-Century School Systems, John G. Richardson
Settlement-Patterns And The Governing Structures Of 19th-Century School Systems, John G. Richardson
Sociology
This paper examines the governing structures of state and local school systems as reported for 1880. Three distinctive models of governance are identified for the Northeast, the South, and the Midwest in the method of appointment or election of school officers at the state and local levels. An explanation for these patterns is presented that centers on the structural relationship between local, corporate communities and the methods of choosing education officials at the state and local levels of government. The northeastern town, the southern county, and the midwestern township are seen as historical antecedents to the specific regional pattern of …
The Minorities Of Northern China: A Survey, Henry G. Schwarz
The Minorities Of Northern China: A Survey, Henry G. Schwarz
East Asian Studies Press
The Minorities of Northern China: a survey, by Henry G. Schwarz. This book contains a survey of the twenty-one minorities of Northern China. Northern China comprises the provinces or autonomous regions of Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hubei, Anhui, and Jiangsu. The survey also takes into account small groups of minorities living in Southern China but whose majorities are resident in the North, such as Mongols, Manchus, and Hui. Conversely, Tibetans living in Qinghai, Gansu, and other parts of Northern China are not considered here because most Tibetans live in …

Paleomagnetism Of Four Late Cretaceous Plutons North Cascades, Washington, William J. (William James) Harrison
Paleomagnetism Of Four Late Cretaceous Plutons North Cascades, Washington, William J. (William James) Harrison
WWU Graduate School Collection
Paleomagnetic directions of samples from the Ten Peak and Sulphur Mtn. plutons, Hidden Lake stock, and Oval Peak batholith in the North Cascades reveal multi-component magnetization and instability. In the Hidden Lake stock and Ten Peak pluton, a strong viscous overprint parallels the present day field. The Sulphur Mountain pluton shows complete magnetic instability; making it impossible to compute a meaningful mean direction. The rocks of the Oval Peak batholith are believed to have been magnetically reset during the Eocene, although the observed declination of 167° and inclination of -67° is significantly different from the expected Eocene direction. The mean …
The Sedimentary Petrography, Depositional Environment And Tectonic Setting Of The Aldwell Formation, Northern Olympic Peninsula, Washington, Keith Marcott
WWU Graduate School Collection
The upper Eocene Aldwell Formation crops out in an east-west trending band across the northern Olympic Peninsula, Washington. Petrographic analyses indicate that the Aldwell Formation has lithologically distinctive eastern and western portions. The rocks of the eastern Aldwell are basalt-rich lithic greywackes; their mean compositions are Qm-F-Lt: 5- 22-73 and polycrystalline quartz-volcanic rock fragments-total sedimentary rock fragments: 1-78-21. The rocks of the western Aldwell are chert-rich lithic arenites; their mean compositions are Qm-F-Lt: 27-19-54 and polycrystalline quartz-volcanic rock fragments-total sedimentary rock fragments: 66-11-23.
Similarities in texture, composition, and alteration products suggest that the basalts of the Crescent seamount province as …
The Geology And Structure Of The Canyon Creek-Church Mountain Area, North Cascades, Washington, Jeffrey T. (Jeffrey Thomas) Jones
The Geology And Structure Of The Canyon Creek-Church Mountain Area, North Cascades, Washington, Jeffrey T. (Jeffrey Thomas) Jones
WWU Graduate School Collection
Four major rock assemblages ranging from Precambrian to Lower Cretaceous occur in the Canyon Creek/Church Mountain area of northwestern Washington. Lithologic, structural, and fossil evidence were used to discriminate among the assemblages and to correlate them with the Chilliwack Group, the Nooksack Group, the Yellow Aster Complex, and a unit previously included in the Chilliwack Group, referred to here as the "chert/basalt unit." These assemblages were juxtaposed during middle Cretaceous tectonism along low angle and high angle faults. There is some evidence for additional structural deformation after the middle Cretaceous.
The Chilliwack Group, consisting of volcanic rocks, volcaniclastic rocks, and …
Net Shore-Drift Of Kitsap County, Washington, Bruce E. Taggart
Net Shore-Drift Of Kitsap County, Washington, Bruce E. Taggart
WWU Graduate School Collection
Kitsap County is located entirely within the Puget Sound Lowland in northwestern Washington State. It has a crenulated coastline 352 km in length. The Puget Sound Lowland, and Kitsap County in particular, is characterized by glacial landforms and sediments. Glacial activity is responsible for the shape and depth of the various water-bodies comprising Puget Sound, which is subject to mixed, semi-diurnal tides.
Net shore-drift is the process by which sediment, supplied to the margin of a landmass by subaerial and wave-induced erosional processes, is transported parallel to the coast by longshore drift and beach drift over a period of many …
The Sedimentary Petrology And Sedimentology Of The Unnamed Middle Eocene Sandstones Of Scow Bay, Indian And Marrowstone Islands, Northwest Washington, Leslie A. Melim
The Sedimentary Petrology And Sedimentology Of The Unnamed Middle Eocene Sandstones Of Scow Bay, Indian And Marrowstone Islands, Northwest Washington, Leslie A. Melim
WWU Graduate School Collection
The unnamed Middle Eocene sandstones of Scow Bay are well exposed on the beaches of Indian and Marrowstone Island, northwest Washington. The rocks strike approximately east-west and dip to the north except on the east coast of Marrowstone Island where the structure is more complex. Each of the four coastal sections was described in detail, and the most complete was also measured.
The sandstone beds are typically thin- to very-thick-bedded, structureless lithic arenite. Locally abundant sedimentary structures include dish structures, vague horizontal lamination, load casts, flame structures, soft sediment deformation, and shale clasts. Interbedded with the sandstones are minor siltstones …
History And Origin Of Debris Torrents In The Smith Creek Drainage, Whatcom County, Washington, Tim L. Syverson
History And Origin Of Debris Torrents In The Smith Creek Drainage, Whatcom County, Washington, Tim L. Syverson
WWU Graduate School Collection
Four debris torrent events have occurred in the Smith Creek drainage since the turn of the century. In 1917, 1949, 1971, and 1983, debris torrents transported large quantities of logs out of the basin onto the delta. Inventories of air photographs of the drainage before and after the three most recent events, combined with field observations after the 1983 event, show that debris torrents in the Smith Creek drainage are closely related to mass movements. Mass movements provide the momentum necessary to mobilize debris in stream channels during periods of heavy run-off, resulting in the formation of debris torrents. Debris …
