A major question in landscape genetics is how habitat structure influences spatial patterns of genetic differentiation. In this study, I evaluate the relative importance and effects of aspects of habitat composition (habitat amount) and configuration (patch size and isolation) on the spatial genetic structure of the pitcher plant midge, Metriocnemus knabi, whose larvae are found exclusively within the water-filled leaves of pitcher plants (Sarracenia purpurea) in a system that is naturally patchy at multiple spatial scales (i.e., leaf, plant, cluster, bog). Objectives: This study examines environmental factors associated with BMI (body mass index) levels among adolescents with the aim of identifying potential interventions for reducing childhood obesity.

Methods: Students (n=1,048) aged 10-14 years at 28 schools in London, ON, completed a survey providing information on age, sex, height, weight, home address, etc., which was used to construct age-sex adjusted BMI z-scores. The presence of recreation opportunities, fast-food outlets and convenience stores was assessed using four areal units around each participant’s home and school neighbourhood: “circular buffers” encompassing territory within a straight-line distance of 500 m and 1000 m; and “network buffers” …

Metagenomic sequencing techniques have made it possible to determine the composition of bacterial microbiota of the human body. Clustering algorithms have been used to search for core microbiota types in the vagina, but results have been inconsistent, possibly due to methodological differences. We performed an extensive comparison of six commonly-used clustering algorithms and four distance metrics, using clinical data from 777 vaginal samples across 5 studies, and 36,000 synthetic datasets based on these clinical data. We found that centroid-based clustering algorithms (K-means and Partitioning around Medoids), with Euclidean or Manhattan distance metrics, performed well. They were best at correctly clustering …

Frequent fast-food consumption is associated with weight gain therefore it is hypothesized that relative availability of fast-food is a risk factor for obesity. This thesis examined the association between the neighbourhood-level density of fast-food outlets and adult body mass index (BMI) in Canada. Population-based data on BMI and socio-economic variables from the 2008 Canadian Community Health Survey [CCHS] and selected neighbourhood-level socio-economic data from 2006 Canadian Census were merged with a commercial database containing geographic locations of all restaurants in Canada. Background: We aimed to estimate the prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicide attempt among prisoners in New South Wales, Australia; and, among prisoners reporting suicidal ideation, to identify factors associated with suicide attempt.

Methods: A cross-sectional design was used. Participants were a random, stratified sample of 996 inmates who completed a telephone survey. The estimated population prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicide attempt were calculated and differences by sex and Aboriginality were tested using c2 tests. Correlates of suicidal ideation and suicide attempt were tested using logistic regression.

Indigenous ecological knowledge can inform contemporary water manage- ment activities including water allocation planning. This paper draws on results obtained from a 3-year study to reveal the connection between Indigenous socio-economic values and river flows in the Daly River, Northern Territory. Qualitative phenological knowledge was analysed and compared to quantitative resource-use data, obtained through a large household survey of Indigenous harvesting and fishing effort. A more complete picture of Indigenous resource- use and management strategies was found to be provided by the adoption of mixed methods. The quantitative data revealed resource-use patterns including when and where species are harvested. The …
