NXS began as an experimental bilingual school in a major urban city in Taiwan. Over its twenty-year history, the school transitioned from offering English language instruction for local students to a fully WASC accredited and IB authorized World School. The foreign staff grew from a few staff to comprising two-thirds of the 150-teaching faculty. Despite the size and potential impact of foreign teachers, they have no voice in the school, are excluded from setting the direction of the school, and are largely absent from the life of the school community. Nickel-based superalloys have a wide range of applications in different industries due to their exceptional mechanical and corrosion-resistance properties. These alloys are widely employed in the nuclear industry. Inside a nuclear reactor, these alloys are exposed to a continuous flux of gamma-radiation. When exposed to gamma-radiation, water decomposes, resulting in the production of oxidizing and reducing species. These species have a considerable effect on the redox chemistry of the solution, which controls the overall corrosion behaviour of nickel-based superalloys.

Hunting has been used as a central tool by wildlife managers to maintain populations of game species, however, we still lack a good understanding of exactly how hunting influences deer biology. Technological advances in GPS data over the last two decades now enable us to perform more detailed analysis on the effects of human hunters on wildlife populations. This research explores the spatial ecology of hunters and White-tailed deer in the Cross Timbers ecoregion of Oklahoma. Brown dwarfs are sub-stellar objects that form like stars but are not sufficiently massive to sustain hydrogen fusion in their cores. Characterized by cool, molecule-rich atmospheres, brown dwarfs demonstrate great diversity in spectroscopic appearance and share many properties with giant exoplanets. In this thesis I present two investigations: the first is a detailed photometric and spectroscopic study of the three most rapidly rotating brown dwarfs. The second examines a spectrum of a cool brown dwarf at unprecedented spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio to study the accuracy of theoretical model photospheres.

This dissertation examines questions of local agency and inclusion. It develops a conceptual understanding of whether, and if so how, local customary justice mechanisms could serve as guarantees of non-recurrence. It looks at how grassroots practices of “justice” could be utilized at the community level to deter the commission of future abuses and prevent the repetition of violent conflict, especially where the state has been completely absent. It specifically explores Acholi indigenous and customary practices of peacemaking and justice in Northern Uganda to understand how local practices could secure a lasting peace and cement communities’ commitment to peaceful coexistence.

Transmission line (TL) structure failures caused by tornadoes have been observed in multiple countries around the globe. The objective of this study is to develop an accurate load case that can simulate the critical tornado forces transmitted from the TL conductors to the towers. The dissertation concerns Thomas Reid’s philosophy of language. In the first three chapters, I discuss his philosophy of language in relation to his developmental psychology. More specifically, I discuss his answers to two questions: (i) what does the ability to understand artificial linguistic signs make possible? and (ii) what makes the ability to understand artificial linguistic signs possible? Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI), a novel imaging technology, offers hotspot visualization and quantification of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) labelled cells in vivo. Bioluminescence imaging (BLI), with the sensitive reporter Akaluc, can provide complementary information on cell viability and proliferation. Here, we combined MPI, and Akaluc BLI for a more holistic picture of cancer cell fate in mice. Breast cancer cells labelled with Akaluc and the SPIO Synomag-D, were injected into the mammary fat pad (MFP) of mice and imaged on BLI and MPI for 2-weeks. Humans’ exploitive killing of virtually every mammal species globally may result in a perception of humans as feared, ultra-lethal predators. In Africa, mammals are central to the continent’s tourism industry; however, it is largely unknown whether African mammals fear the presence of tourists. Firstly, I aimed to review how the presence of humans on the landscape affects African mammal behaviour. Of 31 studies, most authors reported that humans alter mammal behaviour in a manner that may negatively impact survival. There is increasing evidence to demonstrate that current information system theoretical models meant to assess the success of the health information systems (HIS) lack the applicable theoretical underpinning suitable for developing countries. This stems partly from a theory-evidence gap where theoretical models developed in the West are applied in developing country contexts but lack tailoring to localized, contextual realities. This thesis investigates from a phenomenological perspective how it is that I am able to share a space with my brother, Kyle, by way of the videocalling application FaceTime. While the thesis uses the personal as a starting point, it then draws on Merleau-Ponty, the tradition of critical phenomenology, and Media Studies to argue that the one and the other can share a ‘space’ through the screen, despite that they ostensibly only have mutual access to their auditory and visual environments. Previous studies have demonstrated that satisfaction and revision rates following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are lower than those of comparable surgeries such as total hip replacements. A leading cause for these revisions is joint instability which may be due to improper ligament balancing or poorly aligned surgical implants. One of the methods used to investigate biomechanical forces and kinematics is computational modelling of the post-operative TKA knee.

Humans have the ability to learn visual representations of the surrounding environment with limited supervision. A major challenge in cognitive neuroscience is to understand the neural computations that give rise to this ability. Recent work has started modelling the neural computations implemented by the ventral visual system using deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs). Despite their successes, DCNNs leave substantial amounts of variance in brain representations unexplained. Three essays in financial asset pricing are given; one concerning the partial differential equation (PDE) pricing and hedging of a class of continuous/generalized power mean Asian options, via their (optimal) Lie point symmetry groups, leading to practical pricing formulas. The second presents high-frequency predictions of S&P 500 returns via several machine learning models, statistically significantly demonstrating short-horizon market predictability and economically significantly profitable (beyond transaction costs) trading strategies. As part of a larger river restoration project, bed particle dispersion was tracked at pool tailouts where salmon spawning is known to occur in the San Juan (Pacheedaht) River, B.C. Mobility and pathlengths of surface and sub-surface radio-tagged particles was characterized in three reaches over two deployment years in relation to annual channel change, flow magnitude, bar morphology and particle size. Surface particle mobility was high, with results from subsurface tracers indicating high spatial variation of scour at both the reach and local scale. In many real-world scenarios, we need to use multi-class classifiers to properly identify all classes in a dataset. To evaluate performance of multi-class classifiers, we need to take various parameters into account. I created a framework that can be used to drill into the differences between algorithms in specific scenarios and better compare multiple classifiers. This allows researchers to better identify strengths and weaknesses of particular classifiers. Single-cell RNA-seq allows cancer researchers to define complex cell types (i.e. classes) in the tumour micro-environments (TME). Levodopa is a dopamine replacement medication administered to patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) to alleviate their motor symptoms. However, its long-term use can cause adverse side effects, including involuntary motor movements. We studied 16 PD patients before and after taking Levodopa based on resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) recordings to determine how Levodopa affects the functional connectivity of their brain networks. We used several metrics from graph theory, in particular the minimum spanning tree (MST) metric, and analyzed how they change after subjects take Levodopa. In this study, the use of pyrolytic cracking for managing non-recyclable plastic waste by conversion into value-added liquid and gaseous products was investigated. A single-stage reactor and a novel, two-stage reactor set-up were used for experiments involving polyethylene and polypropylene. Parameters including feedstock composition, feed rate, temperature and residence time were studied. The two-stage approach was investigated to overcome existing transportation limitations involved in the typical plastic waste lifecycle. Bulky plastic collected in towns and cities must be transported to industrial facilities typically located elsewhere for reprocessing. Climate warming and atmospheric nitrogen deposition, two elements of global change, are expected to exert strong effects on northern temperate ecosystems over the next century. I added new nitrogen addition and warming plots to a pre-existing nitrogen and warming field experiment in London, Ontario to compare the short-term (1-2 year; new plots) versus long-term (14-15 year; old plots) treatment effects on soil carbon and microbial activity. I used soil density fractionation and size fractionation to separate soil carbon fractions and analyzed carbon quality using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) protein is a critical transcription factor for activating the antioxidant response pathway, a primary defense mechanism against disproportionate levels of oxidants in the cell, via the upregulation of cytoprotective genes. Notably, aberrant activation of Nrf2 in cancer cells increases their resistance to chemotherapy, rendering the treatment ineffective. The focus was to uncover the conformational landscape of Nrf2’s Neh4 and Neh5 domains, which participate in crucial interactions for complete transcriptional activation. The thesis investigates the nonlinear soil-pile-structure interaction through three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models (FEM) employing the OpenSees platform. The FEMs were validated with the results of large-scale shaking table tests of model pile groups-superstructure systems in dry and saturated sand and large-scale field tests on single piles installed in cohesive soil. The numerical models correctly predicted the different pile deformation modes that were exhibited in the experiments. There are still many gaps in improving the fidelity of lunar regolith simulants to simulate more properties. This study compares some fundamental physical and mineralogical properties of three types of lunar highland regolith simulants: LHS-1, a commercial product with high mineralogical fidelity; UWO-1G, an original simulant that is the main component of LHS-1; and UWO-1S, another original product that is attempted to produce shocked grains in lunar simulants from pulverizing and mixing impact rocks sourced from the Mistastin Crater.

Herbicide use within conventional agriculture has contributed to greatly increased crop yields since its widespread adoption, but environmental concerns regarding overuse and reliance on selective herbicides continue to mount. Using five fungal species and two crop residues in a factorial design, I created a novel slurry to control weeds through inhibition by the mycelial mat formed after application to soil. I monitored weed stem counts and the strength of the mycelial mat under the treatments. Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with decreased nutrient availability and reduced insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I bioavailability via increased IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-1 phosphorylation. While protein kinase C (PKC) is implicated in IGFBP-1 hyperphosphorylation in nutrient deprivation, the mechanisms remain unclear. I hypothesized that the interaction of PKCα with protein kinase CK2β and activation of PKCα under leucine deprivation (L0) mediate fetal hepatic IGFBP-1 hyperphosphorylation.
