Physiologic Tailoring Of Therapy For Resistant Hypertension: 20 Years' Experience With Stimulated Renin Profiling, J. D. Spence Dec 1999

Physiologic Tailoring Of Therapy For Resistant Hypertension: 20 Years' Experience With Stimulated Renin Profiling, J. D. Spence

Department of Medicine Publications

Renin profiling to assist in management of hypertension was first proposed about 27 years ago. However, it is still not widely used, perhaps because it was initially emphasized for management of primary hypertension, which is usually relatively easy to manage. Our experience in more than 4000 patients with referral hypertension screened since 1977 suggests that this approach, which I call 'Physiologic Tailoring' of management, is particularly helpful in resistant hypertension, especialiy in cases of adrenocortical hypertension. Three cases of resistant hypertension spanning the 20 years of the clinic's existence, are presented to illustrate the contribution of renin profiling to the …

Local And Global Stereopsis In The Horse., B Timney, K Keil May 1999

Local And Global Stereopsis In The Horse., B Timney, K Keil

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Although horses have laterally-placed eyes, there is substantial binocular overlap, allowing for the possibility that these animals have stereopsis. In the first experiment of the present study we measured local stereopsis by obtaining monocular and binocular depth thresholds for renal depth stimuli. On all measures, the horses' binocular performance was superior to their monocular. When depth thresholds were obtained, binocular thresholds were several times superior to those obtained monocularly, suggesting that the animals could use stereoscopic information when it was available. The binocular thresholds averaged about 15 min arc. In the second experiment we obtained evidence for the presence of …

The Principles Of Liberal Internationalism According To Lester Pearson, Erika Simpson Apr 1999

The Principles Of Liberal Internationalism According To Lester Pearson, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

Liberal internationalism remains the dominant perspective of those who study Canadian foreign policy, many of whom evoke the "Golden Age" of Canadian diplomacy under Lester B. Pearson. This article analyses Pearson's own ideas about the approach that Canada should take on the world stage and reveals recurring themes in his thinking. Analysis of these ideas imparts some general guidelines for conducting Canadian foreign policy. Primary documentary material in the Public Archives of Canada, interviews with Pearson's son and colleagues as well as Pearson's own writing are used to interpret the central elements of his belief system and assess his contribution …

What’S Wrong With Restitution, David Stevens, Jason Neyers Jan 1999

What’S Wrong With Restitution, David Stevens, Jason Neyers

Law Publications

The law of restitution has developed out of the law of quasi-contract and the law of constructive trust. Inadequate attention to the logic and coherence of doctrines in the law of restitution, however, renders this new law as opaque and confused as its predecessor. This is largely due to the remedial mentality of the common law. The remedy to the remedial mentality is to concentrate future efforts in stating doctrine on defining rights, not remedies. The precedent for this type of change in method is the transformation that occurred in contract and tort over the past 100 years, inspired, in …

Development in vitro is influenced by embryo density, serum, somatic cell co-culture and the production of 'embryotrophic' paracrine and autocrine factors. Research in our laboratory has focussed principally on the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) family. We have demonstrated that pre-attachment bovine and ovine embryos express mRNAs encoding a number of growth factor ligand and receptor genes including all members of the IGF ligand and receptor family throughout this developmental interval. In addition, early embryos express mRNAs encoding IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) 2-5 from the one-cell to the blastocyst stage and IGFBP5 mRNA at the blastocyst stage. Cultured bovine blastocysts release up …

Functionally Dissociating Aspects Of Event Memory: The Effects Of Combined Perirhinal And Postrhinal Cortex Lesions On Object And Place Memory In The Rat., T J Bussey, J L Muir, J P Aggleton Jan 1999

Functionally Dissociating Aspects Of Event Memory: The Effects Of Combined Perirhinal And Postrhinal Cortex Lesions On Object And Place Memory In The Rat., T J Bussey, J L Muir, J P Aggleton

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Reciprocal interactions between the hippocampus and the perirhinal and parahippocampal cortices form core components of a proposed temporal lobe memory system. For this reason, the involvement of the hippocampus in event memory is thought to depend on its connections with these cortical areas. Contrary to these predictions, we found that NMDA-induced lesions of the putative rat homologs of these cortical areas (perirhinal plus postrhinal cortices) did not impair performance on two allocentric spatial tasks highly sensitive to hippocampal dysfunction. Remarkably, for one of the tasks there was evidence of a facilitation of performance. The same cortical lesions did, however, disrupt …

On The Feasibility Of A Moving Support For Surgery On The Beating Heart, A. L. Trejos, S. E. Salcudean, F. Sassani, S. Lichtenstein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

In this paper the use of a heart-tracking hand support is proposed to allow coronary artery bypass grafting surgery to take place on the beating heart. Requiring only a three-degree-of-freedom motion platform that tracks a point on the surgical site, this method eliminates the tissue damage associated with the use of physical heart stabilizers and provides a much cheaper alternative to six-degree-of-freedom masterslave systems. To demonstrate the feasibility of such an approach, a motion platform with a motion range and frequency typical of coronary motion was designed and built. A task typical of suture placement was executed on this platform …
