The Incidence Of Psychotic Disorders And Area-Level Marginalization In Ontario, Canada: A Population-Based Retrospective Cohort Study, Martin Rotenberg, Andrew Tuck, Kelly K. Anderson, Kwame Mckenzie

Paediatrics Publications

Background: There is limited Canadian evidence on the impact of socio-environmental factors on psychosis risk. We sought to examine the relationship between area-level indicators of marginalization and the incidence of psychotic disorders in Ontario. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all people aged 14 to 40 years living in Ontario in 1999 using health administrative data and identified incident cases of psychotic disorders over a 10-year follow-up period. Age-standardized incidence rates were estimated for census metropolitan areas (CMAs). Poisson regression models adjusting for age and sex were used to calculate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) based on CMA and …

Objective: The risk of adverse health events is expected to increase with hotter temperatures, particularly among the most vulnerable groups such as elderly persons and children. The objective of this study was to assess the association between extreme heat and daily emergency department visits among children (0 to 17 years) in Southwestern Ontario. Methods: We examined the average maximum temperature, relative humidity, and daily paediatric emergency department visits in June through August of 2002 to 2019. We reviewed emergency department visits from two academic hospitals. Daily meteorological data from the local weather station were obtained from Environment and Climate Change …

There is limited empirical evidence documenting the magnitude and correlates of area-level variability in unmet need for children’s mental health services. Research is needed that identifies area-level characteristics that can inform strategies for reducing unmet need in the population. The study purpose is to: (1) estimate area-level variation in children’s unmet need for mental health services (using Service Areas as defined by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services), and (2) identify area-level service arrangements, and geographic and population characteristics associated with unmet need. Using individual-level general population data, area-level government administrative data and Census data from Ontario, Canada, …

A Cross-Sectional Study Measuring Vanadium And Chromium Levels In Paediatric Patients With Ckd, Guido Filler, Marta Kobrzynski, Hargun Kaur Sidhu, Vladimir Belostotsky, Shih Han S. Huang, Chris Mcintyre, Liju Yang May 2017

A Cross-Sectional Study Measuring Vanadium And Chromium Levels In Paediatric Patients With Ckd, Guido Filler, Marta Kobrzynski, Hargun Kaur Sidhu, Vladimir Belostotsky, Shih Han S. Huang, Chris Mcintyre, Liju Yang

Paediatrics Publications

Objectives Although many secondary effects of high levels of vanadium (V) and chromium (Cr) overlap with symptoms seen in paediatric patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), their plasma V and Cr levels are understudied. Design Ancillary cross-sectional study to a prospective, longitudinal, randomised controlled trial. Setting Children's Hospital of Western Ontario, London Health Sciences Centre, London, Ontario, Canada. Participants 36 children and adolescents 4-18 years of age with CKD. Interventions 1-6 trace element measurements per patient. Cystatin C (CysC) estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the Filler formula. Plasma V and Cr levels were measured using high-resolution sector …

Visits To Rheumatologists For Arthritis: The Role Of Access To Primary Care Physicians, Geographic Availability Of Rheumatologists, And Socioeconomic Status, Elizabeth M. Badley, Mayilee Canizares, Anna C. Gunz, Aileen M. Davis

Paediatrics Publications

Objective. This multilevel study examines access to rheumatologists for all arthritis and inflammatory arthritis, taking into account geographic availability of rheumatologists, access to primary care physicians (PCPs), and population characteristics (e.g., socioeconomic status [SES]). Methods. We analyzed data from the population (age ≤18 years) living in the 105 health planning areas in Ontario, Canada on visits to physicians for arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders. Using data from a survey of rheumatologists and Geographic Information System analysis, an index of geographic availability for rheumatologists was calculated, incorporating distance between the population and rheumatologist locations and the number of hours per week of …

The Incidence Of First-Episode Schizophrenia-Spectrum Psychosis In Adolescents And Young Adults In Montreal: An Estimate From An Administrative Claims Database, Kelly K. Anderson, Rebecca Fuhrer, Michal Abrahamowicz, Ashok K. Malla Jan 2012

Malla

Paediatrics Publications

Objective: There has been increasing interest in the psychiatric literature on research and service delivery focused on first-episode psychosis (FEP), and accurate information on the incidence of FEP is crucial for the development of services targeting patients in the early stages of illness. We sought to obtain a population-based estimate of the incidence of first-episode schizophrenia-spectrum psychosis (SSP) among adolescents and young adults in Montreal. Methods: Population-based administrative data from physician billings, hospitalizations, pharmacies, and public health clinics were used to estimate the incidence of first-episode SSP in Montreal. A 3-year period (2004-2006) was used to identify patients with SSP …
