The Effectiveness Of Physical Activity Interventions Among Preschool-Aged Children: A Meta-Analytic Review, Elliott Seth Gordon Jan 2011

The Effectiveness Of Physical Activity Interventions Among Preschool-Aged Children: A Meta-Analytic Review, Elliott Seth Gordon

Digitized Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of physical activity interventions among preschool-aged children. A secondary purpose was to investigate the influence of several moderator variables (e.g., location of intervention, intervention type, intervention leadership) on physical activity and body composition outcomes. Nine databases were systematically searched; a total of 19 studies meet the inclusion criteria. Effect sizes (i.e., Hedges g values) were calculated using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. SPSS software was used to analyze the data. Results indicated that interventions had moderate effects on preschoolers’ engagement in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (g = 0.51;/? < .05; n = 39 ES) and small or small- to-moderate effects on: body composition (g = 0.28;p < .05; n = 39 ES); light intensity physical activity (g = 0.27; p > .05; n= 11 ES); …

Evaluation Of Physical Activity Participation Among Individuals With Parkinson’S Disease Using The Physical Activity Scale For Individuals With Physical Disabilities, Johanna Jimenez-Pardo Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Physical Activity Participation Among Individuals With Parkinson’S Disease Using The Physical Activity Scale For Individuals With Physical Disabilities, Johanna Jimenez-Pardo

Digitized Theses

Engaging in physical activity is generally thought to be beneficial to individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). There is, however, limited information regarding current rates of physical activity among individuals with PD. The present study had two goals: (1) to evaluate the suitability of the Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities (PASIPD) for the measurement of physical activity within this population; and (2) to evaluate the amount of physical activity engaged in by individuals with PD. The PASIPD was demonstrated to be a reliable and valid assessment of physical activity within this population. Evaluation of PASIPD scores suggests that …

Falls, Fall-Related Injuries And Physical Activity In Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Dawn P. Gill Jan 2008

Falls, Fall-Related Injuries And Physical Activity In Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Dawn P. Gill

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this dissertation was to add to our understanding of falls, fall- related injuries, and physical activity (PA) in community-dwelling older adults. The specific aims were to determine the relationship between PA and falls, explore alternative analysis approaches for falls as an outcome measure, and assess the relationship between injurious falls and subsequent PA (both household and recreational) in older male veterans. In order to carry out this research, related aims of this project were to devise and evaluate a brief interview tool appropriate for the assessment of PA in fall prevention studies of community-dwelling older adults (the …

An Evaluation Of Project Impact: A Pilot Program Promoting Physical Activity Among University Students, Scott A. Cholewa Jan 2006

An Evaluation Of Project Impact: A Pilot Program Promoting Physical Activity Among University Students, Scott A. Cholewa

Digitized Theses

Purpose: The purpose of Project IMPACT was to evaluate the impact of a buddy system, record-keeping device, and a combination of the two on the physical activity participation, physical activity-related barriers and task efficacy, and body mass index of undergraduate university students. Methods: A heterogeneous sample of 51 students participated in Project IMPACT. Participants self-selected either an online record-keeping device, a buddy system, a combination of the two, or a control group. All participants completed a series of previously validated questionnaires, at four different time periods, to assess changes in the aforementioned outcome variables. Results: Significant increases in physical activity …
