The Galvanic Cell Oxygen Analyzer Vs. The Winkler Method For Oxygen Determinations In Paper Mill Wastes, Edwin J. Grossenbacher Dec 1965

The Galvanic Cell Oxygen Analyzer Vs. The Winkler Method For Oxygen Determinations In Paper Mill Wastes, Edwin J. Grossenbacher

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This study was designed to verify the assumption that the galvanic cell oxygen analyser can be used as a substitute for the Winkler method in determining the dissolved oxygen content of paper mill effluent. The purpose also includes an attempt to show that dissolved oxygen determinations made by either the Winkler method or by the galvanic cell oxygen analyser are of the same magnitude and can be compared directly. The assumption that this is possible has been based upon extensive tests on solutions containing various spent sulfite liquor wastes at various concentrations. These tests show that the electrode measurements are …

Phase Shift Analysis Of Protons Elastically Scattered By 016 Near EP = 8.3 Mev, Glenn D. Westin Dec 1965

Phase Shift Analysis Of Protons Elastically Scattered By 016 Near EP = 8.3 Mev, Glenn D. Westin

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

The study of the resonances in the scattering cross section of the p + O16 reaction can reveal information regarding the energy levels of the compound nucleus F17. The analysis is simplified because of the zero spin of the O16 nucleus. Also, the low binding energy of the proton added to O16 allows examination of the low-lying energy levels in F17.1 The reaction has been intensively investigated at the University of Wisconsin in a series of experiments using an electrostatic accelerator as a source of protons.

The Preparation Of 5-Arylazopyrimidines, Frederic Edwin Dutton Dec 1965

The Preparation Of 5-Arylazopyrimidines, Frederic Edwin Dutton

Masters Theses

Introduction

The synthesis of 5-arylazopyrimidines was undertaken in search of potential anticancer agents.

While many azo compounds have carcinogenic activity, it has been shown by several workers in this area that some 5-arylazopyrimidines have anticancer properties. S. Hibino(1) has shown that p-(2,4,6-triamino-5-pyrimidinylazo) benzene-sulfonic acid shows promise as an effective anticancer agent when used in conjunction with 6-mercaptopurine and adrenal steroidal hormones. When tested clinically, total remission of the leukemic process was achieved in 85.7% of the cases treated. In comparison, total remission was achieved in only 57.5% of the cases treated with a mixture of 6-MP and the hormone which …

Virginia Evangelicals And The American Revolution: The Role Of The Baptist, Presbyterian, And Methodist Clergy, William Jennings Terman Dec 1965

Virginia Evangelicals And The American Revolution: The Role Of The Baptist, Presbyterian, And Methodist Clergy, William Jennings Terman

Masters Theses

I. Religious Factors as a Cause of Revolution

Standard history books contain little or nothing of the documentary material which would relate religion to the factors contributing to the American Revolution. References to social, political, and economic causations abound, but only occasional statements concerning the influence of religion are found, and among these the role of the Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Quaker persuasions receives most attention. Yet the involvement of the evangelical churches was significant enough to merit separate, intensive studies. It is the object of this essay to investigate the involvement of the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist groups in …

The Orientation And Mobility Needs Of Blind Youth In A Highly-Impacted Metropolitan Area, Lawrence E. Blaha Dec 1965

The Orientation And Mobility Needs Of Blind Youth In A Highly-Impacted Metropolitan Area, Lawrence E. Blaha

Masters Theses

Introduction

Mobility enables man to interact with his surroundings, and to influence his environment as well as to be influenced by it. The need for the blind individual to relate himself to his environment has been the motivation for the development of orientation and mobility instruction.

While orientation and mobility for the blind is a relatively new discipline, the systemic use of basic techniques, i.e. hand-and-arm techniques and the use of long, light, functional cane as a mode of travel, has been validated empirically with more than a thousand blinded adults. These techniques have also been used successfully with blind …

The Calculation Of The Cross-Section Of The Interaction Between Two Yang-Mills Fields, Richard A. Starr Dec 1965

The Calculation Of The Cross-Section Of The Interaction Between Two Yang-Mills Fields, Richard A. Starr

Masters Theses

The Problem and Its Background

This thesis presents a study of the interaction between two arbitrary fields, named Yang-Mills fields1 for their originators. The basic equations for the calculations of the Yang-Mills interaction are due to modern quantum field theory and its specific application to quantum electrodynamics.2

Much useful information can be obtained from the formulation of the dynamical equations for a classical system: for example, the classical description of the electromagnetic field, based on Maxwell's equations, leads to wave concepts. Then using this formalism as a starting point, one can proceed to the quantum theory of free …

Plant-Derived Pigments And Dyes Used By Artists, Samuel C. Rizzetta Dec 1965

Plant-Derived Pigments And Dyes Used By Artists, Samuel C. Rizzetta

Masters Theses

History

Uses of Biologically-derived Products in Painting

Throughout history man has relied heavily on plant-derived materials in the production of paintings. Plant products have been used to fulfill each of the material requirements of painting. The ground or surface upon which an artist applies paint -is usually of plant origin, such as woven fabrics and paper. The ancient Egyptians painted on canvas (from Linum usitatissimum L.), papyrus, (from Cyperus papyrus L.), and wood (Lucas, 1934:149-150, 201-203; Laurie, 1910:17, 31-32).

At the time of Theophilus leather parchment, preferably of horsehide, was popular for painting (Bazzi, 1960:13). After parchment, walls and wooden …

The Reaction Of Metal Hydrides With Azoacetates, Thomas H. Althuis Oct 1965

The Reaction Of Metal Hydrides With Azoacetates, Thomas H. Althuis

Masters Theses

Introduction

The term aliphatic azo compound refers to those azo compounds in which at least one of the two nitrogen atoms is linked to a tetrahedral, that is, sp3 -hybridized carbon atom. Di-imides, RN=NH, however, are not being considered. Mixed aliphatic-aromatic azo compounds are those in which one nitrogen atom is linked to an sp3 -hybridized carbon atom and the other to an aromatic sp2 -hybridized carbon atom. If present, a symmetry element (point or plane) is determined by the mid-point between the two nitrogen atoms.

The Effect Of Fines On Relative Bonded Area, Richard G. Bowler Sep 1965

The Effect Of Fines On Relative Bonded Area, Richard G. Bowler

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Bonding characteristics of the fibers in a sheet of paper have long been, and still are, difficult to isolate in a manner which will give exact quantitative information on the degree or bonding. It is possible to indicate with strength tests different levels or bonding. Other factors -- fiber strength, fiber length, cell wall thickness, etc.,-- also enter into values obtained in these tests and make the assignment of exact meaning to bonding impossible. The subject of a major port of this literature search deals with measurement of another bonding characteristics, relative bonded area or simply bonded area. This again …

Study Of The Stereochemistry Of A Carbanion Generated From An Azoacetate, Nguyen Thanh Buu Sep 1965

Study Of The Stereochemistry Of A Carbanion Generated From An Azoacetate, Nguyen Thanh Buu

Masters Theses

Introduction

The reaction of lead tetraacetate with ketohydrazones to form azoacetates has been reported recently by Iffland, Salisbury and Schafer (13) and may be represented by the following equation:

R2C=N-NH-R' + Pb(0Ac)4 → R2C-N=N-R' + Pb(OAc)2 + HOAc OAc

Of principal interest has been the base-catalyzed decomposition of an azoacetate in a protonic solvent to give a ketone, a hydrocarbon, nitrogen and an acetate salt. The following sequence of steps has been proposed to account for these products (11).

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between Judgements Of Esophageal And Artificial Larynx Speech Made By Sophisticated And Naïve Judges, Gerald Robert Moses

Masters Theses

The Background and Purpose of the Study

Introduction

Laryngectomy, the surgical removal of the larynx, is performed to save life threatened by a carcinomatous condition of the larynx. This surgical procedure is also performed when necessitated by accident, injury or other pathologies of the larynx. (35).

There are living, in the United States, an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 individuals who have undergone surgical removal of the larynx due to the carcinomatous condition of that organ (33). It is probable that the total population of laryngectomized persons would exceed this number if statistical information were available concerning the number of laryngectomies …

An Investigation Of The Maturation Of Articulation Of Elementary School Children, Thomas D. Marshall Aug 1965

An Investigation Of The Maturation Of Articulation Of Elementary School Children, Thomas D. Marshall

Masters Theses

The Background and Purpose of the Study

Introduction

Developmental studies of speech (12, 13, 24) have indicated that the growth of articulation skills in children follows a definite pattern, with the vowels being first mastered, then the consonants, and finally, the consonant blends. Studies generally agree that the normal child acquires essentially adult articulation by eight years of age. It may be expected, then, that in the early elementary grades, immature articulation skills are not unusual in normal children, and that at higher grade levels, immature articulation skills are relatively less common. Mills and Streit (11), in a survey of …

U.S. Foreign Aid Policy: Its Impact On Public Opinion, Jane L. Olson

Masters Theses

Introduction

An analysis of the relationships between public policy and public opinion is vital to gaining an understanding and appreciation of the political process in the United States. According to democratic theory, citizens are to be free to express their views on issues and policy decisions. In a representative democracy the elected officials are supposed to carry out the wishes of their constituents. This study is directed toward analyzing the relationships between foreign aid policy and public opinion toward ten selected policy changes which have taken place since World War II. It focuses on the formal foreign aid program; and, …

Father Charles E. Coughlin And The Formation Of The Union Party 1936, Michael H. Parsons

Masters Theses

Preface

On October 17, 1926, a young Irish-Catholic priest stood before the altar of his church in Royal Oak, Michigan and delivered a radio sermon. Within a decade, his voice, transmitted by thousands of radios, would be familiar to millions of Americans. Father Charles E. Coughlin had begun a stormy career that would earn him the title "radio priest" and make him one of the most controversial figures to appear on the American political scene in the depression-ridden 1930's.

...

In this study, I trace the development of Coughlin's disillusionment with the Roosevelt administration, analyze his contribution to the formation …

Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation And Diffusion In Paraffin Oil, David E. Parker Jul 1965

Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation And Diffusion In Paraffin Oil, David E. Parker

Masters Theses

Introduction

Since the introduction of the spin echoes technique by E. L. Hahn1 many studies have been made in the determination of the spin relaxation T2, spin-lattice relaxation T1, and the diffusion rates in gases, liquids2-5, and solids6-10. Hahn's methods were later improved by Carr and Purcell11. The Carr-Purcell method serves as the basic technique for this study.

Several studies have been published on the relaxation and diffusion rates in hydrocarbons12. These studies have shown:

1. The spin relaxation time T2, is independent of the …

An Investigation Of Adaptation To The Delayed Auditory Feedback Effect By Normal Speakers, Nelson H. Bormann Jul 1965

An Investigation Of Adaptation To The Delayed Auditory Feedback Effect By Normal Speakers, Nelson H. Bormann

Masters Theses

Introduction

Research is being conducted in numerous areas of interest in an effort to better understand the functionings of the various speech deviations. One promising area of investigation is studying speech production as an automatic-control system or a servosystem. Interest in studying the theories of servosystems was greatly stimulated by the work of Nobert Wiener, who first formulated and developed the science of cybernetics. An integral aspect of cybernetic theory is the concept of controlling the behavior of a system by monitoring and evaluating the system's own output. Wiener stated that, in its simplest form, "...the feedback principle means that …

Great Britain And The Balkan Crisis Of 1875-1878, Carol Zainfeld Becker Jul 1965

Great Britain And The Balkan Crisis Of 1875-1878, Carol Zainfeld Becker

Masters Theses

Introduction

For years Great Britain had followed the time-honored doctrine in foreign affairs of maintaining the balance of power which meant

to resist by diplomacy or arms the growth of any European State at once so formidable and so potentially hostile as to threaten our national liberties, the security of our shores, the safety of our commerce or the integrity of our foreign possessions.

With the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 and the establishment of the Metternichian concept of the concert of Europe, Britain's historic determination to preserve the balance of power gave way to a new attitude in foreign …
