The Reclamation Of Fibers From Blueprint Stock, Joseph A. Boyle
The Reclamation Of Fibers From Blueprint Stock, Joseph A. Boyle
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Object
A method of reclaiming the fibers from blueprint paper after it has been used in the photocopying precess and the subsequent bleaching of these fibers is sought.
A Photographic Study Of The Effects Of Beating On Fiber Structure, Gene D. Anderson
A Photographic Study Of The Effects Of Beating On Fiber Structure, Gene D. Anderson
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Because beating is the most fundamental, but highly important, process in the paper industry, some of the changes in fiber structure that occur during beating have been investigated. A literature survey is also presented concerning a number of related investigations of fiber structure.
The experimental results indicate that fibrillation begins very shortly after the beating process is started. As beating progresses, the primary cell wall is removed, and the specific area of the fiber increases greatly when the watery medium encounters the secondary lamella area of the fiber. Continued beating shows that the action is a mechanical one, in that …
An Investigation Of Nylon Fiber As A Papermaking Material, Robert J. Thiessen
An Investigation Of Nylon Fiber As A Papermaking Material, Robert J. Thiessen
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Investigations were made to determine whether or not a practical method of bonding nylon-wood blend paper could be devised in which advantage is obtained from the strength qualities of the nylon fibers in the finished sheet. Two unsatisfactory methods were tried before a satisfactory method was found. By this method 25-to 50-per cent nylon content sheets were dipped in a five to ten-per cent solids water emulsion of a polyamide resin. The sheets were then dried, free of surface support, and then heat pressed to complete the bonding. Paper of high strength and durability was thus produced.
A Comparison Of Sheffield Instruments For Smoothness And Porosity With Others Now Used, John B. Yonker
A Comparison Of Sheffield Instruments For Smoothness And Porosity With Others Now Used, John B. Yonker
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
This report shows that there is a correlation between Bekk and Sheffield smoothness and between Gurley and Sheffield porosity. The correlation is not as good in the upper Bekk smoothness range or in the upper Gurley range.
An Analysis Of The Qualifications Of Selected Business Students Who Graduated From Comstock, Michigan, High School To Determine The Adequacy Of Their Training, Esther Larsen Fellows
An Analysis Of The Qualifications Of Selected Business Students Who Graduated From Comstock, Michigan, High School To Determine The Adequacy Of Their Training, Esther Larsen Fellows
Masters Theses
The Problem and Its Background
Since the first World War, business training on the secondary level has steadily grown in the number of students enrolled and in importance. New inventions, recent legislation involving more record keeping, and rapidly growing industry has brought about the demand for more workers, especially for office workers.
In a survey made in 1954 for the Comstock School Board it was found that most of the graduates from Comstock High School begin working in offices without further training. Although 49 per cent of the graduates seek further education before beginning regular employment, only 30 per cent …
A Survey Of Music Programs In Christian Schools Of America, Robert V. Talsma
A Survey Of Music Programs In Christian Schools Of America, Robert V. Talsma
Masters Theses
Music departments of the Christian schools have experienced very rapid growth during the last two decades and appear to possess wide variance in the nature of their development in subject offering and time allotment. This study was designed to survey the music programs of the Christian schools in America to determine the extent to which music subjects are a part of the offerings of these institutions.
A Survey Of The Effect Of Mineral Salts On Direct Dyeings, Lawrence R. Bortolotti
A Survey Of The Effect Of Mineral Salts On Direct Dyeings, Lawrence R. Bortolotti
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A study of the effect of various minerals salts on dyeings made with direct dyes. Dyes were chosen for their frequency of usage in the paper industry; the salts were chosen for several reasons, the prime one being that they form a floc at approximately the same pH as that of the stock run over the paper machine, also for its cost and availability. Sheets were made with the various dyes and salts in severals percentages of each dried, out up into test sheets for fading and bleeding. The test sheets were examined visually for evidence of fading and bleeding …
Impartial Evaluations Of The Printing Quality Of Paper, Warren R. Engel
Impartial Evaluations Of The Printing Quality Of Paper, Warren R. Engel
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Several methods for the evaluation of paper have been investigated for their desirability as means of an impartial evaluation of the printing quality of paper. The halftone plate method showed the most desired results as an impartial evaluation of both coated and uncoated papers. The printing gage was not found to be a satisfactory method of evaluation. The drawdown method is especially significant in evaluating properties which influence the printing quality but lacks a suitable numerical evaluation.
The Relationship Of Missing Teeth To Lisps, Richard Swerzbin
The Relationship Of Missing Teeth To Lisps, Richard Swerzbin
Masters Theses
Introduction
The Problem and Its Background
The profession of speech therapy is little more than twenty-five years old. As in any new field many beliefs are currently held without experimental corroboration. One of these concerns dentition. The claim is made by some speech therapists that missing teeth cause lisps. Other therapists and writers have doubted this belief. It is therefore the purpose of this study to determine the relationship between missing and articulation of the sibilant sounds, [s], [z], [S], [3], [tS], [d3], among first grade school children.

Factors Affecting The Enrollment Of Students In Homemaking Programs In Junior And Senior High Schools Of Southwestern Michigan, Cecile L. Herscher
Factors Affecting The Enrollment Of Students In Homemaking Programs In Junior And Senior High Schools Of Southwestern Michigan, Cecile L. Herscher
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Introduction
Statement of the Problem
The purpose of this study is to determine some of the more important factors which affect the enrollment of students in homemaking programs in selected junior and senior high schools of Southwestern Michigan and to use these findings and conclusions in suggesting ways in which homemaking may become more effective in the educational program of the junior and senior high schools of Michigan.
An Exploratory Study Of Differential Diadochokinesis, Marie C. Crickmay
An Exploratory Study Of Differential Diadochokinesis, Marie C. Crickmay
Masters Theses
Introduction
In speech man is forced to use organs, muscles and groups of muscles whose basic function is to serve other purposes, namely, to chew, to suck and swallow, movements which are relatively slow and primitive in execution. But in articulate speech it is necessary to manipulate these same organs and muscles at a faster speech, and with far greater precision than was required of them in the performance of their basic function.
An Investigation Of The Vocal Phonic Abilities Of Children With Normal Speech And Articulation Disorders, Orville Wilson Wensley
An Investigation Of The Vocal Phonic Abilities Of Children With Normal Speech And Articulation Disorders, Orville Wilson Wensley
Masters Theses
Introduction
Much of the recent literature dealing with the etiology and treatment of functional articulatory defects, has been concerned with perceptual aspects of the problem. Many clinicians feel that it is in the area of perceptual deficiences that most of the causes of articulatory defects occur, even though research does not support that opinion.
