Critical speed (CS) is the speed one can sustain while maintaining blood lactate, phosphocreatine, and oxygen uptake levels. “Distance capacity beyond CS” (D’) is the reserve an athlete can draw from to run faster than their CS. By increasing CS and D’, athletes can sustain a faster threshold pace (CS) and have a greater sprint capacity (D’). Unlike distance traveled and speed, which do not reflect the metabolic strain of an exercise, CS and D’ assess the relative intensity of an activity to provide individualized inter- and intra-competition insight. PURPOSE: This investigation evaluated CS and D’ among men and women …

The Economic Determinants Of American Professional Sports Franchise Valuations, Ryan Flora
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This thesis seeks to analyze the impact of regional identities on American professional sports team valuations. Regional identities are classified as any name of a team that is not tied directly to the city that they reside in. For example, the Carolina Panthers have a regional identity because they are not based out of “Carolina”, they are based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Another example would be the Arizona Cardinals, whose name encompasses the whole state of Arizona rather than Phoenix, the city they are based out of. The leagues that will be involved in this study are the National …

Visual Focus And Sports Performance, Carolina A. Orsi, Taylor Todd, Devin Stewart
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Understanding how an athlete’s mind and body interact is vital in finding ways to promote maximal athletic performance. Athletes are required to smoothly connect their external environment to internal motor networks for executing sports specific tasks. A study by Corbetta and Shulman aimed to explain how quiet eye (QE) connects with athletic performance. Their study defined QE as the “final fixation to a target during the preparation phase of a goal-directed movement” (2002). Corbetta and Shulman found that QE measurements were longer when maximizing “goal-directed” attention and minimizing “stimulus-driven” attention (2002). PURPOSE: This study analyzes the distance between where …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding, single stranded RNA molecules (19-24 nucleotides in length) that influence mRNA or protein levels by promoting either mRNA degradation or by preventing protein translation. In silico target prediction has revealed that they might regulate more than two thirds of human genes therefore playing an important role in physiological as well as pathophysiological processes (Ambros 2004; Lim, Lau et al. 2005). As such miRNAs have been identified as mediators of biological processes such as inflammation, angiogenesis, mitochondrial metabolism, cardiac and skeletal muscle contractile force generation and muscle hypertrophy and are suggested to play a significant role …
