International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The rise of Chronic Illness and Disease (CID) globally and the increase in lifespan/survival rates among those with CID have boosted the interest on how coping, a psychosocial construct, influences rehabilitation. A relationship between coping and psychosocial adjustment has been repeatedly confirmed. Religious coping (RC), a specific emotion-focused coping act, focuses on the roles of religion in crisis, trauma, or transition. RC is part of secondary appraisals and it can take two forms: positive and negative. There is high prevalence of depression among people with CID. Coexisting depression and the COVID-19 pandemic have added significant burden on those individuals’ daily …

The analysis begins with the two main primary sources, Hermann von Kerssenbrock and Henry Gresbeck, whose accounts provide firsthand knowledge of how events in Munster led to the Anabaptist takeover. Care is taken to read beyond some of the biases and assumptions made by those authors to gain the clearest insight for what really happened.

The essay looks at Anabaptism itself, including what it meant to be Anabaptist from the perspectives of participants and …

Y Con Ellos Rezamos: The Intersection Of Spanish Religious Identity And Nationalism In The Valley Of The Fallen, 1939-2019, Helen Michelle Spalding

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Nestled in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains of Spain in northwest Madrid is The Valley of the Fallen, (El Valle de los Caídos). This Spanish Civil War monument was originally constructed in 1940 as a celebration of the fascist victory of the war over the radical leftist republicanos. The monument made clear the Catholic ties that dictator Francisco Franco’s regime planned to uphold through its religious spaces such as an abbey and basilica. Since the monument’s construction and into the present day, the public eye has mainly associated the Valley of the Fallen with the Francoist dictatorship. However, this paper …

Keeping Faith: A Qualitative Study On Religiosity Among Young Catholics In Ireland, Michael A. Clements Jan 2020

Keeping Faith: A Qualitative Study On Religiosity Among Young Catholics In Ireland, Michael A. Clements

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Ireland is a country that is well-known for its Catholic heritage. Despite its global perception as a Catholic country, the Emerald Isle has experienced rapid secularization within the last 30 years, during which rates of Church attendance and Catholic self-identification have fallen dramatically. Likewise, the legalization of abortion, gay marriage, and divorce, concepts contrary to Catholic teaching, further reflect the island's departure from Catholic Orthodoxy. Should the Catholic religion have a future in Ireland, it will lie in the hands of its devout youth: a demographic with relatively little representation in the literature.

Using a hybrid interview and survey format, …

White-Identifying Populations' Perceptions Of Muslims In The United Kingdom And United States, Ashley Gilliam Oct 2018

White-Identifying Populations' Perceptions Of Muslims In The United Kingdom And United States, Ashley Gilliam

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Much of Western society is engaging with complex ideas and events such as multiculturalism, immigration, assimilation, and terrorism. Given these events, my larger research question addresses how majority populations view minority groups. Several studies have provided a view of how Muslims in the West form their own identities (Hopkins, 2011; Modood & Ahmad, 2007; …
