Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

NADP+-dependent 5-ketogluconate reductase (D-Gluconate:NAD(P)+ oxidoreductase E.C. 1.1.1.69) isozymes were detected in cell-free extracts of Gluconobacter suboxydans (American Type Cultures Collection, Bethesda, Maryland, strain 621). Cell-free enzyme extracts were prepared from cells grown in media which contained glucose, gluconate, glycerol, sorbitol, or mannitol as the sole carbon source in 2% concentration. The extracts were fractionated using analytical polyacrylamide disc-gel electrophoresis. Gels were stained specifically for 5-ketogluconate reductase. Three isozymes were present in each extract from cells grown on the five different carbon sources. Gels stained in a reaction mixture which contained glycerol exhibited two of the isozymes.

Radioprotection Of Oral Cavity Structures By S-2-(3-Aminopropylamino) Ethyl Phosphorothioate (Wr-2721), Ronald King

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Studies reporting a high concentration of WR-2721 in mouse salivary glands led to our studies of possible radioprotection of these glands by this drug from ionizing radiation. Oral effects of radiation in the presence of WR-2721 were studied in mice and dogs. Histological evaluation of mouse salivary glands irradiated with 1000 rads of 60Co showed essentially no difference between control and experimental animals. Almost full regeneration of the serous salivary components occurred by 6 months in both groups and neither group had changes in the mucous glands. The use of higher doses of radiation in the mouse was prevented …

Samuel Butler’S Way Of All Flesh As A Sociological Novel, David Carter Jul 1976

Samuel Butler’S Way Of All Flesh As A Sociological Novel, David Carter

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To scholars of Victorian literature, Samuel Butler has always been a rebel who strikes out at society with wide-ranging criticism. After years of studying subjects as varied as music, art, biology, literature, and theology, Butler felt (like many Victorian writers) that he could make valuable social comments with his satires, travelogues, biological studies and one novel.

Critical studies of Butler have tended to treat in broad outline all facets of his life and work. This study, however, examines in depth Butler’s novel The Way of All Flesh, as the focal point of his critical analysis of Victorian society. It treats …

A Comparison Of Zero-History & Continuing Groups In Two Communication Networks, Howard Sypher Jul 1976

A Comparison Of Zero-History & Continuing Groups In Two Communication Networks, Howard Sypher

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Five-person continuing and zero-history groups solved sentence-completion problems in two communication networks: the comcon and the wheel. Oral communication was utilized and all problem solving sessions were tape recorded for analysis. Analysis of variance revealed that the comcon network was significantly faster that the wheel in completing the task. The continuing groups used significantly more messages than the zero-history groups in problem solving. A chi-square test indicated that the continuing groups also used significantly more "sociability" messages than the zero-history groups in solving the sentence-completion problems. Analysis of variance revealed that in both groups, subjects in the central position of …

Andrew Sarris And The Politique Des Auteurs (1962-1974): An Assessment And An Analysis, Steven Grumbacher Jul 1976

Andrew Sarris And The Politique Des Auteurs (1962-1974): An Assessment And An Analysis, Steven Grumbacher

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The politique des auteurs was, from the period 1968 through 1973, the dominant methodology in cinematic criticism. It was tentatively formulated by Francois Truffaut in 1954 and greatly expanded upon by Andrew Sarris in 1962. Briefly, the “auteur theory” (as it is known in English speaking countries.) contends that aesthetically important films are the product of an auteur--an equivalent term to author in a work of literature or composer as opposed to conductor in a musical composition--and that that auteur is usually the film’s director. The quality of the film under scrutiny is directly related to the ability of that …

The Validity Generalization & Extension Of The Revised Iptis, William Hanshaw Jul 1976

The Validity Generalization & Extension Of The Revised Iptis, William Hanshaw

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The basic theoretical concepts of Rational-Emotive and Rational-Behavior Therapy were discussed along with a psychometric study of an inventory measuring irrational tendencies. The revised Irrational Personality Traits Inventory Scale (IPTIS), an inventory reported to measure how an individual thinks, feels, and acts, was investigated as to the soundness of its psychometric characteristics. More specifically, the purpose of this study was to: (a) determine the reliability of the revised IPTIS with a new sample from an older population, i.e., college students, (b) assess its concurrent validity with a measure of neuroticism, and (c) evaluate the possible effects of a socially desirable …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

NADP+-dependent 5-ketogluconate reductase (D-Gluconate:NADP+ oxidoreductase; E.C.I.I.I.69.) of Gluconoacter suboxydans was examined and determined to be constitutive in nature. Crude, cell -free enzyme extracts were prepared by sonication of cells grown on 2.0'% glucose and 2.0% ethanol in various experiments. The specific activity of 5-ketogluconate reductase in the crude enzyme extracts of cells grown under various conditions was determined. The specific activity remained relatively constant strongly indicating the constitutive nature of the enzyme.

The Relationship Of Selected Communication Variables To Selection Interview Outcome, Marvin Posey Jr. Jul 1976

The Relationship Of Selected Communication Variables To Selection Interview Outcome, Marvin Posey Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The relationship of attitude change, eye contact time, and interview length to selection interview outcome was investigated by directly observing fifty-four selection interviews. Statistical analysis of the data revealed that although attitude change was the only independent variable significantly related to interview outcome, all three independent variables interacted in such a manner that applicant acceptance or rejection was correctly predicted 83 percent of the time. Attitude change was concluded to be the product of interview content. Furthermore, the predictive power of variable interaction was interpreted as meaning that given attitude change, eye contact time, and interview length, applicant acceptance or …

It was found that the fear of appearing incompetent correlated positively with self-estimated IQ, but correlated negatively with obtained IQ. The fear of appearing incompetent had no significant relationship to GPA. The fear of appearing incompetent in participants who over-estimated their IQs did not differ significantly from the fear of appearing incompetent …

Photochemistry Of Beta-Methyl-Beta-Nitrostyrene And Its Derivatives, Mohammad Z. Kassaee Jun 1976

Photochemistry Of Beta-Methyl-Beta-Nitrostyrene And Its Derivatives, Mohammad Z. Kassaee

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

o-CH3, o-CH3O, m-CH3O and p-CF3-β-methyl- β-nitrostyrene (compounds not previously reported) were synthesized using the method of Lappin13 and Robertson.14 These styrenes were irradiated in the U.V. region. The yield of corresponding oximes varied from 85 to 100% in aqueous ethanol. This variation in yield of the oximes was attributed to the effect of the substituent on the phenyl rings of the corresponding styrenes. Electron donating substituents promoted the nitro-nitrite rearrangement and electron-withdrawing groups inhibited this rearrangement. A mechanism is proposed for this reaction which unifies and includes ideas proposed by …

One hundred and five Kentucky mental health professionals, including physicians, psychologists, and social workers, responded to a questionnaire designed to assess their knowledge and attitudes on seven selected laws and legal issues regarding involuntary hospitalization in Kentucky.

The …

The Fundamental Reality In The Ontology Of African People, Charles Ereraina Osume May 1976

The Fundamental Reality In The Ontology Of African People, Charles Ereraina Osume

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

“The fundamental reality in the ontology of African people” is an effort to alert the reader to a crucial omission in most contemporary studies on the religion or culture of African people. The majority of the current anthropologists (scholars in the field of contemporary religions) only make a passing reference to the spirit beings that infest the world of traditional Africa.

Apart from inadequate attempts to psychologize the religions of pre-literary man, investigators of pre-scientific cultures have for the most part been unable to account for the unflinching loyalty and meticulous devotion of traditional man to spirit beings. The reason …

If I'D Been Polish, I Guess I'D Be Playing Polkas: An Examination Of The Social Contexts Of Traditional Irish Music In Rochester, New York, George Stoner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Anthropologists, folklorists and popular writers have, in general, neglected to describe. the social contexts in which traditional Irish music is played. Although the dance was probably the most important context for traditional Irish music in Rochester, as elsewhere in the United States and Ireland, interest among Irish-born Americans and Irish- Americans in traditional dancing has waned. At present, the most important social contexts for Irish music in Rochester are the session, the Feis, and various representational contexts. The session is by far the most important, and has developed as interest in the dance has declined. Unlike the dance, it is …
