Esterase Activity In The Greater Wax Moth Larvae, Daphne Lin Pai Dec 1974

Esterase Activity In The Greater Wax Moth Larvae, Daphne Lin Pai

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Some properties of esterases of the greater wax moth larvae, Galleria mellonela (L.), were examined and the enzymes partially purified. Several buffer systems were tried and it was found that tris buffer was most suitable. The tris buffer resulted in less hydrolysis of the acetylsalicylic acid. Esterase activity was determined with acetylsalicylic acid in tris buffer, pH = 7.85, 0.05 M. The enzymes were partially purified by combination of acetone powder preparations, ammonium sulfate precipitations and gel filtration.

The ratio of esterase activity to protein content was increased 1.03 fold by acetone powder preparation and 1.5 fold by 70% ammonium …

Photochemistry Of Beta-Methyl-Beta-Nitrostyrene & Its Derivatives, Donald Tang Dec 1974

Photochemistry Of Beta-Methyl-Beta-Nitrostyrene & Its Derivatives, Donald Tang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A series of β- methyl-β-nitrostyrenes have been synthesized and subjected to ultraviolet irradiation. A new technique has been developed for synthesis of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime and its derivatives by irradiation of the corresponding styrene. The yields of the oximes were almost quantitative [except 1-(p-nitrophynyl)-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime and 1-(m-nitrophenyl)-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime]. It has been found that irradiation of the appropriate styrene is a very simple, efficient, and general procedure for the synthesis of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione-1-oxime and a number of its derivatives. A number of derivatives of β- methyl-β-nitrostyrene (p-CH3, p-Ch30, p-Cl, p-No2, and m-NO2) were irradiated. It was found that …

An Alternate Solution To The Two-Dimensional Ising Model, B. Craig Meyers Aug 1974

An Alternate Solution To The Two-Dimensional Ising Model, B. Craig Meyers

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An alternate solution for the two-dimensional Ising model in a zero external magnetic field is presented. Following Kaufman, the partition function is written as the trace of a certain matrix product. The trace can be evaluated by computing the determinant of a related matrix. The determinant is evaluated by finding the product of its eigenvalues; in the thermodynamic limit the result is equivalent to that found by Onsager.

A Position Paper Of Environmental Education For Nelson County, Geneva B. Hunt Aug 1974

A Position Paper Of Environmental Education For Nelson County, Geneva B. Hunt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The results of a survey, concerning environmental education taken of the educators of the Nelson County School System, indicated a need for environmental education workshops and classes.

The status of environmental education in the nation and in Kentucky were studied and compared. A research was done of the status of environmental education in Nelson County, and implications were drawn for implementing environmental education in the Nelson County School System.

A tentative program for implementing environmental education in the Nelson Country schools was given, and a bibliography of resources and materials to be used in said program was included.

Ultraviolet Photosimulated Thermoluminescence Of Lithium Flouride, Martin Payne Jul 1974

Ultraviolet Photosimulated Thermoluminescence Of Lithium Flouride, Martin Payne

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

TLD-100 (lithium fluoride) thermoluminescence dosimeters are widely employed for the detection of ionizing radiations. This paper shows that these dosimeters may also serve as practical germicidal ultraviolet radiation dosimeters. To measure ultraviolet radiation, the TLD-100 dosimeters are first exposed to 500,000 roentgens of gamma radiation and then annealed at 300°C. Subsequent dosage of ultraviolet radiation may be determined by observation of photostimulated thermoluminescence of the crystal. The presented data indicate that the thermoluminescence response is linear for exposures up to 6,000 µjoule/cm2 and independent of exposure rate from 0.1 µ watt/cm2 to above 50 µwatt/cm2. Optical …

Photochemistry Of Beta-Methyl-Beta-Nitrostyrene, Peggy Chen May 1974

Photochemistry Of Beta-Methyl-Beta-Nitrostyrene, Peggy Chen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It has been postulated that acetone is the best solvent for the photochemical rearrangement of β-methy1-β-nitrostyrene to 1-phenyl-1, 2-propanedione-1-oxime and it has been postulated to be a sensitizer for this rearrangement. It has also been suggested that the methyl group on the beta-carbon is required for the proper orientation of the nitro group for rearrangement. The irradiation of β-methyl-β-nitrostyrene in several solvents has been studied and the yield of oxime has been recorded. It has been found that several solvents gave yields of oxime higher than that recorded for acetone. We do not, therefore, believe acetone to be necessary to …

The Fresh-Water Mussel Industry Of The Lower Tennessee River: Ecology & Future, Randall Grace May 1974

The Fresh-Water Mussel Industry Of The Lower Tennessee River: Ecology & Future, Randall Grace

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The fresh-water mussel industry of the Tennessee River is nearing an end. Overharvesting, habitat alterations, and pollution are the major contributors to the depletion of the mussel resource, upon which the shell industry is based. A history of unconcern by shell harvesters and weak conservation enforcement by governmental agencies, has left the major waterways of the United States nearly void of commercial clams. The lower Tennessee River presently supplies the mussel industry with nearly all the important species of mollusks. If this industry is to be maintained in the United States, ways to preserve and propagate the mussel population must …
