Heirloom And Hybrid Tomato Yield And Quality In Organic And Conventional Production Systems, Diana J. Edlin Dec 2009

Heirloom And Hybrid Tomato Yield And Quality In Organic And Conventional Production Systems, Diana J. Edlin

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Due to the recent changes in the economy of Kentucky tobacco production, some producers are seeking an alternative crop that will provide similar economic gains to tobacco without needing more acreage. Tomatoes are an existing crop in Kentucky that have been declining in acreage over the last five years. There is evidence to suggest that, through niche and local marketing, tomatoes may be able to fill the void left by tobacco. However, there is concern among producers that they will lose yield and/or quality if they switch to one of these niche production systems or cultivars.

A two year study …

Using Conservative And Biological Tracers To Better Understand The Transport Of Agricultural Contaminants From Soil Water Through The Epikarstic Zone, Brian Ham Dec 2009

Using Conservative And Biological Tracers To Better Understand The Transport Of Agricultural Contaminants From Soil Water Through The Epikarstic Zone, Brian Ham

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Agriculture contamination is very common in karst systems due to the vulnerability of these aquifers. Animal waste is often spread across crop land to enrich the soil with nitrates and phosphates. Herbicides and pesticides are also applied to the crops. The transport of these pollutants through the soil and epikarst is a difficult process to monitor due to the complex, heterogeneous behavior of the groundwater as it makes its way down to the aquifer below.

An experimental site at Crumps Cave lended a unique opportunity to monitor the vadose zone at a waterfall in the cave below. A previous dye …

"All The Crises Reached A Concerted Crescendo" - The Arab Oil Embargo And Why The United States Was Unprepared For It, Jonathan D. Chilcote

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

During the 2008 spike in oil prices, oil companies and government officials were brought under close scrutiny as many Americans began to question why prices were able to rise so quickly. Americans had become accustomed to living in an economy where cheap oil was the norm, and demanded answers when that situation changed. What most of them did not know is that they were repeating history and mimicking the response to the 1973 oil embargo. Just as in 2008, the United States faced a crisis in 1973 with which it was unprepared to effectively cope. This thesis analyzes the reasons …

Off-Metal Synthesis Of Some Aryl Substituted Rhenium N5-Cyclopenta [C] Pyridazyl Complexes, James Leif Neathery

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Heterocyclic organic and organometallic compounds (e.g. polypyrrole), and their derivatives, have been of great interest for conductive polymers due to their novel properties and environmental stability as compared to non-aromatic analogs (e.g. polyacetylene). Our current interests focus upon the potential role of pyridazines in next generation electronic devices that utilize organics as the semiconducting material. Pyridazines, 6-membered aromatic rings with two adjacent nitrogens, are promising candidates for a variety of materials and commercial applications. These molecular electronic materials posses several advantages over traditional inorganic semiconducting materials including lower cost of production, higher processibility, and the ability to function on flexible …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Some Rhenium Complexes, Joseph Brian Scott Aug 2009

Synthesis And Characterization Of Some Rhenium Complexes, Joseph Brian Scott

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Plastics or polymers are thought to behave oppositely from metals. Ideally, polymers behave as insulators while metals conduct electricity. Shirakawa and coworkers discovered conductive polymers in 1977.1 These conductor polymers have been extensively studied, discovering that charge transfer oxidative doping of polyacteylene could increase its conductivity by 12 orders of magnitude. Polyacetylene, although showing promise as an organic conductor, because it is highly air-sensitive and oxidizes when exposed to molecular oxygen, therefore making this an unattractive use for commercial products. Attention has been focused on heterocylic aromatic polymers such as polythiophene and polypyrrole, in efforts to produce conductive polymers that …

As such, this thesis will begin with a description of protein function and structure, followed by brief discussions of the two major experimental structure determination methods. Another problem that often arises in molecular modeling is referred to as the Molecular Distance Geometry Problem (MDGP). This problem seeks to find coordinates for the atoms of a protein or molecule when given only a set of pair-wise distances between …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bis-Phosphine Complexes With Transition Metals, Alicia L. Mcdaniel Aug 2009

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bis-Phosphine Complexes With Transition Metals, Alicia L. Mcdaniel

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Extractants and extraction methodologies play a vital role in many industrial processes, from the concentration of precious metals from ores to the separation of longlived nuclei from radioactive waste as well as the removal of heavy metals from soils and water for remediation. The vast majority of extractants rely on the use of nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur or selenium as Lewis base donor atoms to form coordination complexes with the metal ions of interest. These extractants often make use of the chelate effect and/or the macrocyclic effect in order to form stable complexes. Some of the best known types of chelate …

Prior to upland timber harvesting, 5.0 ± 0.1 g yellow-poplar leaf packs were constructed, zip-tied to gutter nails, and placed into 7 perennial and 6 temporary stream reaches with similar physiochemical and geomorphic characteristics. From December 2007 to May 2008, 3–5 leaf packs were collected per reach monthly. I found significant differences in the functional feeding group composition. Temporary reaches contained higher shredder, gathering-collector, predator, …

Modeling Stormwater Pollutant Transport In A Karst Region--Bowling Green, Kentucky, Allison H. Ross Jul 2009

Modeling Stormwater Pollutant Transport In A Karst Region--Bowling Green, Kentucky, Allison H. Ross

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The management of stormwater runoff is a particular challenge for communities in karst regions. Most guidelines for compliance with regulations for stormwater monitoring and mapping pertain to non-karst environments. It can be argued that effective stormwater management is even more essential to karst regions because stormwater receives little or no natural filtration as it is transferred through conduits in the subsurface and the buildup of pollutants underneath can be detrimental to community and environmental health if not effectively mitigated. Because of the limited resources available to determine how stormwater runoff carries potential pollutants across the surface before being transferred to …

Qualitative Behavior Of Solutions To Differential Equations In RN And In Hilbert Space, Qian Dong May 2009

Qualitative Behavior Of Solutions To Differential Equations In RN And In Hilbert Space, Qian Dong

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The qualitative behavior of solutions of differential equations mainly addresses the various questions arising in the study of the long run behavior of solutions. The contents of this thesis are related to three of the major problems of the qualitative theory, namely the stability, the boundedness and the periodicity of the solution. Learning the qualitative behavior of such solutions is crucial part of the theory of differential equations. It is important to know if a solution is bounded or unbounded or if a solution is stable. Moreover, the periodicity of a solution is also of great significance for practical purposes.

A Framework For Consistency Based Feature Selection, Pengpeng Lin May 2009

A Framework For Consistency Based Feature Selection, Pengpeng Lin

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Feature selection is an effective technique in reducing the dimensionality of features in many applications where datasets involve hundreds or thousands of features. The objective of feature selection is to find an optimal subset of relevant features such that the feature size is reduced and understandability of a learning process is improved without significantly decreasing the overall accuracy and applicability. This thesis focuses on the consistency measure where a feature subset is consistent if there exists a set of instances of length more than two with the same feature values and the same class labels. This thesis introduces a new …

On The Breadth Of The Jones Polynomial For Certain Classes Of Knots And Links, Cody Lorton May 2009

On The Breadth Of The Jones Polynomial For Certain Classes Of Knots And Links, Cody Lorton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The problem of finding the crossing number of an arbitrary knot or link is a hard problem in general. Only for very special classes of knots and links can we solve this problem. Often we can only hope to find a lower bound on the crossing number Cr(K) of a knot or a link K by computing the Jones polynomial of K, V(K). The crossing number Cr(K) is bounded from below by the difference between the greatest degree and the smallest degree of the polynomial V(K). However the computation of the Jones polynomial of an arbitrary knot or link is …
