Finding Myself Back Home In Botswana: Reflections On A Semester Abroad, Anne M. Odonnell

Capstones and Honors Theses

Anthropology aims to study people and their culture in order to understand the breadth of human experience. This paper examines the ways in which a semester of study abroad can supplement and aid in future work in anthropology. Primarily, it examines culture shock and how it can be managed and the connections between cultures that are separated across space. It also explores the ways in which the environment and wildlife of a new area can contribute to a person's experience of place.

The Punitive Effect Of Electric Shock In Rats In Relation To The Rate Of Food Reinforcement, Vincent A. Bello

Capstones and Honors Theses

The purpose of the present experiment was to examine effects of the rate of reinforcement on the punitive function of shock for 4 rats. In baseline conditions, rats’ lever presses were reinforced with food according to a VI schedule. During punishment conditions, a VR-5 schedule of shock punishment was superimposed on the VI schedule. Across pairs of baseline and punishment conditions, the rate of reinforcement ranged from 0.5 to 6 food deliveries per min. Response rates during the baseline and punishment conditions generally increased as the reinforcement rate was raised for two out of four rats. For three rats, suppression …

Capstones and Honors Theses

To investigate the relationship between dietary quality and mental health status of young adults in an Appalachia college setting we 1) assessed the overall dietary quality of students 2) assessed the frequency of depression and anxiety symptoms of students and 3) assessed the relationship between these factors and food insecurity of students. A cross-sectional design was used in a large, Appalachian college population in fall 2017. Survey items included the Dietary Screener Questionnaire (DSQ), experience of depression or anxiety symptoms over the past 30 days, and the US Adult Food Security Survey Module, demographic variables and BMI. Participant responses (n=1956) …

The Constitutional Conundrum: Commerce And The Tenth Amendment, Jennifer Marie Walker Jan 2018

The Constitutional Conundrum: Commerce And The Tenth Amendment, Jennifer Marie Walker

Capstones and Honors Theses

Since the drafting of the United States Constitution, the power of both the federal government and the individual state governments has been a topic of controversy. The Constitution's strong focus on federal powers ultimately threatened to derail ratification. To secure the ratification of the Constitution, a Bill of Rights was added to the document. Comprised of ten amendments, the Bill of Rights generally elaborated on individual rights. The Tenth Amendment, however, dealt more specifically with the federal-state relationship. Several early federal court cases established the federal judiciary's power to answer important Constitutional questions. This power thus granted the federal judiciary …

The Effect Of Downregulation Of A Cell-Wall Modigying Gene On Bud Set Timing In Populus Deltoides., Luke Jarrod Stover Jan 2018

The Effect Of Downregulation Of A Cell-Wall Modigying Gene On Bud Set Timing In Populus Deltoides., Luke Jarrod Stover

Capstones and Honors Theses

In an attempt to enhance the efficiency of biofuel production, research has traditionally focused on wood chemistry in forest trees. Altered wood chemistry has the potential to reduce recalcitrance to carbohydrate extraction and conversion, but may have unintended effects on dormancy. In Populus deltoides (eastern cottonwood), changes in dormancy may inhibit annual growth rates or put the trees at risk for frost damage, compromising benefits of genetic engineering. Genome wide association analysis indicates that multiple polymorphisms in and around the Potri.013G001600.1 gene of unknown function have a strong association with bud set date. This experiment isolated the gene's transcription levels …

Crispr-Cas9 Mediated Genetic Ablation On The Actin Regulatory Protien Cortactin Does Not Impain Hnscc Invasive Processes, River Austin Hames

Capstones and Honors Theses

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a highly invasive cancer with a five-year overall survival of approximately 50%. HNSCC incidence is increasing in WV and other Appalachian areas due to high tobacco consumption and human papilloma virus exposure. Genomic instability is a hallmark of tobacco carcinogen exposure, resulting in amplification of chromosomal region 11q13 in 25% of all HNSCC cases. 11q13 amplification correlates with poorer prognosis and increased tumor aggressiveness. The CTTN locus resides in the 11q13 amplicon and encodes the actin-regulatory protein cortactin. Increased cortactin expression resultant from CTTN amplification drives HNSCC invasiveness by increasing tumor cell …

Cortactin Phosphorylation By Casein Kinase 2 Regulates Actin Related Protein 2/3 Complex Activity And Invadopodia Function, Steven Michael Markwell Jan 2018

Cortactin Phosphorylation By Casein Kinase 2 Regulates Actin Related Protein 2/3 Complex Activity And Invadopodia Function, Steven Michael Markwell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Malregulation of the actin cytoskeleton enhances tumor cell motility and invasion. The actin-binding protein cortactin facilitates branched actin network formation through activation of the actin-related protein (Arp) 2/3 complex. Arp2/3 complex activation is responsible for driving increased migration and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation by governing invadopodia formation and activity. While cortactin-mediated activation of Arp2/3 complex and invadopodia regulation has been well established, signaling pathways responsible for governing cortactin binding to Arp2/3 are unknown. In this dissertation we identify casein kinase (CK) 2α phosphorylation of cortactin as a negative regulator of Arp2/3 binding. CK2α directly phosphorylates cortactin at a conserved threonine …

A mechanized harvest system combined with whole-tree chipper producing mixed hardwood chips was investigated on two harvesting sites in the central Appalachian region, USA. Production and machine rate data of the operations were collected through time-motion study, with chipping time elements categorized into feeding, chipping, and loading. Chipping cycles averaged 21.5 minutes to produce 23.54 green tons per truckload, providing an hourly rate of 65.82 green tons/PMH (41.1 dry tons) by the whole-tree chipper. Total cycle time including truck delivery averaged 183 minutes, giving an hourly rate of 7.7 green tons/PMH (4.8 dry tons/PMH). The hourly cost of the harvesting …

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Frp Composite Bridge Componenets Using Infrared Thermography And Digital Tap Tesing, Ruben Mangal Joshi Jan 2018

Nondestructive Evaluation Of Frp Composite Bridge Componenets Using Infrared Thermography And Digital Tap Tesing, Ruben Mangal Joshi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Aging of civil infrastructures is one of the major problems faced by the engineering industry today, with the concrete structures cracking and the steel reinforcement corroding due to exposure to deicing chemicals, resulting in shorter service life. An alternative to the degrading infrastructures made of concrete and steel is the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites, which are noncorrosive. Use of FRP as structural components such as bridge decks and retrofitting jackets can solve the problem of aging with enhanced durability in future constructions. But, proper installation of newer material in structurally important infrastructure requires a reliable method of …

Rethinking Interaction: Identity And Agency In The Performance Of “Interactive” Electronic Music, Jacob A. Kopcienski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This document investigates interaction between human performers and various interactive technologies in the performance of interactive electronic and computer music. Specifically, it observes how the identity and agency of the interactive technology is experienced and perceived by the human performer. First, a close examination of George Lewis’ creation of and performance with his own historic interactive electronic and computer works reveals his disposition of interaction as improvisation. This disposition is contextualized within then contemporary social and political issues related to African American experimental musicians as well as an emerging culture of electronic and computer musicians concerned with interactivity. Second, an …
