A Parametric Study And Economic Evaluation Of Drilling Patterns In Deep, Thick Cbm Reservoirs, Ali Omran Ali Nasar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Over the past decade, the production from unconventional reservoirs such as coalbed methane has increased dramatically. The focal driving force for this growth in coalbed methane production was the development and promulgation of reservoir engineering and completion technology.;There have been many studies performed on the well configuration and production optimization techniques in the coal seams. According to many of these studies horizontal, deviated and multi-lateral wells are of more benefits compared to the vertical wells. However, the targets of these studies have mostly been the thin coal seams while this result might not hold for the thick CBM reservoirs. The …

Experimental Analysis Of The Post-Failure Behavior Of Coal And Rock Under Laboratory Compression Tests, Dachao Neil Nie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A major aspect of coal mine design is the structural stability of the mine. For establishing structural stability, the strength of the strata is determined by recovering the cores. The strength is determined through various methods and one method in particular is the Uniaxial Compressive Strength of the rock, which is commonly adopted as the standard strength indicator. However, in-situ behavior by past researchers have shown that rock and coal show significant residual strength contrary to the failure path observed in a conventional compression tests. Researchers in past had used stiff system for generating the post failure behavior of the …

Coalbed methane (CBM) production has become increasingly profitable in recent years. Production prediction and analysis is challenging in these reservoirs due to two-phase flow conditions. A CBM reservoir is classified as an unconventional gas reservoir due to its unique flow and storage characteristics. Software simulators are by far the best way to predict production performance in CBM reservoirs.;This study investigated the impact of relative permeability on production type curves of horizontal wells in CBM reservoirs. Both relative permeability to gas and water were analyzed using numerical models. The simulation model used for this study is Eclipse Office due to its …

Impact Of Formation Properties And Well Design On Cumulative Gas Production From Devonian Shale, Jacques Ita Aug 2011

Impact Of Formation Properties And Well Design On Cumulative Gas Production From Devonian Shale, Jacques Ita

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Devonian Shale refers to all the shale strata sandwiched between two different formations; the younger Berea sandstone above it and the older limestone termed Onondaga or Coniferous below it. Devonian Shale consists of exceptionally rich source rocks; were it not for their low porosity and permeability, the shales would represent one of the greatest oil and gas producing provinces of the world. It is estimated that up to 90 TCF of natural gas could be recovered from Devonian Shale. However, production potential of Devonian Shale is difficult and expensive to determine with production being variable because shale is a very …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purpose of this study was to investigate and identify the pressure behavior of a horizontal well with multiple hydraulic fractures completed in an ultra-low permeability formation. These formations are also referred to as unconventional gas reservoirs. Unconventional gas reservoirs such as shales and tight gas sands have extremely low permeability that requires massive simulation treatments in order to produce at an economic flow rate. Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing are proven technologies for achieving economic production from unconventional gas reservoirs. A dual porosity reservoir model was employed in this research study to simulate the pressure behavior of horizontal well …

Impact Of Hydraulic Fractures On Type Curves For Horizontal Wells In Cbm Reservoirs, David Christopher Bell Aug 2011

Impact Of Hydraulic Fractures On Type Curves For Horizontal Wells In Cbm Reservoirs, David Christopher Bell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

As production technologies continue to increase, more and more unconventional natural gas plays are becoming economical and attractive to produce. CBM, or coalbed methane, currently accounts for approximately ten percent of all natural gas production in the U.S., and that number is increasing. Therefore, it is critical to understand what makes a reservoir a viable option for production development.;Many current tools used to predict the performance of a reservoir rely heavily on unknowns about the formation, and are therefore risky and complex. Numerical methods and computer simulations can greatly aid in the evaluation, but still remain an incomplete description of …

Production Analysis Of Marcellus Shale, Hossein Belyadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the production potential of Marcellus shale using actual field data. By using real field production data for 9 vertical and 3 horizontal wells it was possible to predict and understand the cause and effect relationship between the specific reservoir parameters and the overall production outlook of the reservoir in the long run. Using an assumed base model and narrowing each parameter down to match historically to the actual field data the forecast of the reservoir behavior was attained. The main model relied upon in this thesis was the Dual Porosity Model, which …

Analysis Of Pressure Data From The Horizontal Wells With Multiple Hydraulic Fractures In Shale Gas, Essa M. Tabar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

In the last several years, the unconventional gas reservoirs development has grown tremendously. Most of these unconventional reservoirs have very low permeability and are not able to produce an economic flow rate without stimulation treatments. The common method to improve the production is by a horizontal well with multiple hydraulic fractures. Hydraulic fracturing is a stimulation practice to improve the permeability in order to obtain commercial production. Horizontal wells with multiple hydraulic fracture treatments have proven to be an effective method for development of unconventional reservoirs.;The objective of this study is to investigate the interpretation of pressure transient responses from …

Prediction Of The Effects Of Compositional Mixing In A Reservoir On Conversion To Natural Gas Storage, Alan Wallace Brannon May 2011

Prediction Of The Effects Of Compositional Mixing In A Reservoir On Conversion To Natural Gas Storage, Alan Wallace Brannon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Most existing gas storage fields have been developed from depleted natural gas and oil production reservoirs. It is not uncommon for gas storage fields to be developed in water bearing aquifer zones where the presence of conventional type reservoirs is limited. Natural Gas Condensate reservoirs are typically not found in the eastern United States where most gas storage facilities are developed close to the colder market and increased population centers. Therefore, data is limited on how the lean dry storage gas will interact with the remaining residual gas condensate liquid and wet gas at reservoir pressure and temperature conditions.;Data concerning …

Since the dawn of rotary drilling, engineers and scholars have persevered, through study and research, to formulate an optimum inhibitive drilling fluid for the shale formations. Although fluids with acceptable performance in shale have been formulated, one only needs to examine the word "acceptable" in the context above to realize that the industry has ongoing activities to formulate an optimum inhibitive fluid for the Marcellus Shale. In accordance, this research seeks to fabricate a means of reducing formation damage (permeability reduction), stuck pipe incidences, heaving, sloughing and caving which are all due to the swelling of Smectite clay and shale. …

Optimization Of Operating Parameters For Minimum Mechanical Specific Energy In Drilling, Todd Robert Hamrick May 2011

Optimization Of Operating Parameters For Minimum Mechanical Specific Energy In Drilling, Todd Robert Hamrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Efficiency in drilling is measured by Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE). MSE is the measure of the amount of energy input required to remove a unit volume of rock, expressed in units of energy input divided by volume removed. It can be expressed mathematically in terms of controllable parameters; Weight on Bit, Torque, Rate of Penetration, and RPM. It is well documented that minimizing MSE by optimizing controllable factors results in maximum Rate of Penetration. Current methods for computing MSE make it possible to minimize MSE in the field only through a trial-and-error process. This work makes it possible to compute …

Interpretation Of Well Test Data From Two Hydraulically Communicating Reservoirs, Bander Ibrahim Al Quaimi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Naturally fractured reservoirs (NFR) have been receiving more attention than ever since the beginning of the last decade due to various reasons. The current understanding is not sufficient to achieve a favorable recovery factor due to the complexity associated with the fracture characterization and the dynamic behavior of the fractured system. The majority of the fractured reservoirs are developed. Therefore, before proceeding into secondary or possibly tertiary recovery processes a thorough understanding must be reached to avoid undesirable results. The huge reserve volume present in fractured oil and gas reservoirs motivate engineers, researchers, and geoscientists to exert additional efforts to …
