Automated Dental Identification: A Micro-Macro Decision-Making Approach, Diaa Eldin M. Nassar Dec 2005

Automated Dental Identification: A Micro-Macro Decision-Making Approach, Diaa Eldin M. Nassar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Identification of deceased individuals based on dental characteristics is receiving increased attention, especially with the large volume of victims encountered in mass disasters. In this work we consider three important problems in automated dental identification beyond the basic approach of tooth-to-tooth matching.;The first problem is on automatic classification of teeth into incisors, canines, premolars and molars as part of creating a data structure that guides tooth-to-tooth matching, thus avoiding illogical comparisons that inefficiently consume the limited computational resources and may also mislead the decision-making. We tackle this problem using principal component analysis and string matching techniques. We reconstruct the segmented …

A Web-Based Environment For Automated Dental Identification Research, Satyasrinivas Chekuri Dec 2005

A Web-Based Environment For Automated Dental Identification Research, Satyasrinivas Chekuri

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS), division of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), include in its strategic plan the creation of an Automated Dental Identification System (ADIS), a Post Mortem Dental Identification System.;This project aims at designing an end-to-end web-interface to meet the requirements of ADIS like Identification, Maintenance and Bridge Modules. In Identification Mode the subject record will be uploaded by the user and the match list is obtained as result. Maintenance Mode enables uploading of reference records and to populate the database with preprocessing data. Bridge Module enables researchers from other universities to use the database designed …

Post Retention With Mineral Trioxide Aggregate And Accelerated Portland Cement, Pamela P. Harrington Aug 2005

Post Retention With Mineral Trioxide Aggregate And Accelerated Portland Cement, Pamela P. Harrington

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Perforations occurring during post placement are problematic. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is slow to set. A trial demonstrated that CaCl2 accelerated the set of Portland cement. Forty single-rooted teeth were sectioned, treated with endodontic therapy and post prepared. The first group contained 20 teeth, evaluated at 72 hours. MTA, Portland cement with 10% CaCl2, 15% CaCl2 and zinc phosphate were used as post cements. The second group was evaluated at 28 days. The posts were cemented with either MTA or zinc phosphate. Instron mechanical testing was used to determine forces needed for post dislodgement. The 72 hour group showed statistically …

The Effectiveness Of Valdecoxib On Post-Endodontic Pain, Lora Beth Ford Aug 2005

The Effectiveness Of Valdecoxib On Post-Endodontic Pain, Lora Beth Ford

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Pain is often associated with teeth that need endodontic therapy. This pain results from inflammation. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs are useful in managing acute post-operative dental pain. NSAIDS specific for only blocking the COX-2 enzyme cause less stomach irritation and bleeding. The purpose of this clinical study was to determine if pre-operative administration of valdecoxib would significantly reduce post-endodontic pain, when compared to ibuprofen. Sixteen patients were evaluated. The patients consented to a random, one-time, pre-operative oral administration of either 600 mg ibuprofen or 20 mg valdecoxib. Each patient rated their pain on a visual analog scale at initial, immediately after, …

Dental Values As A Factor Affecting Attendance Among Patients With High Dental Fear, Suzanne M. Lawrence Aug 2005

Dental Values As A Factor Affecting Attendance Among Patients With High Dental Fear, Suzanne M. Lawrence

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purpose of this study was to assess the degree to which oral health values affect attendance patterns in a group of West Virginia patients with high dental fear. Participants were selected from 585 patients who presented to an oral diagnosis clinic at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry for either emergency services or to be screened for regular patient status. Participants completed a battery of self-report instruments. Those who were identified as having high dental fear (i.e., were in the top 50% of a same-sex distribution on the Dental Fear Survey) were contacted by telephone approximately one year …

Anatomical Measurements Of Orthodontic And Edentulous Casts To Determine The Width Of The Maxillary Anterior Teeth, Byron A. Davis May 2005

Anatomical Measurements Of Orthodontic And Edentulous Casts To Determine The Width Of The Maxillary Anterior Teeth, Byron A. Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Without dental records of patients' teeth prior to extractions, the selection of maxillary anterior teeth for the edentulous patient is mostly subjective. Several techniques using anatomic landmarks have been suggested for determining the size of maxillary anterior teeth. The purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of using 3 anatomical areas of the oral cavity the "right hamular notch-incisive papilla-left hamular notch (HN-IP-HN) measurement," to calculate the width from the distal of the canine to the distal of the opposite canine. 24 post-orthodontic dentulous patients and 19 edentulous patients were evaluated for maxillary anterior tooth size using the …

Use Of Conventional Tomography To Evaluate Changes In The Nasal Cavity With Rapid Palatal Expansion, Jacqueline R. Palaisa May 2005

Use Of Conventional Tomography To Evaluate Changes In The Nasal Cavity With Rapid Palatal Expansion, Jacqueline R. Palaisa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The relationship between nasal airway resistance and rapid palatal expansion remains controversial. The purpose of this study is to determine the anatomical changes within the nasal cavity following expansion using conventional tomography. Nineteen patients (ages 8--15) were included in the study. Tomograms were taken before expansion, immediately after expansion, and three months later. Areas for the left and right anterior, middle and posterior nasal cavity and total volume were calculated using computer software (AutoCAD LT 2005). Data was analyzed using paired t-tests. Significant increases in area were found in the anterior, middle and posterior nasal cavity at all time periods. …

Multi-Resolution Dental Image Registration Based On Genetic Algorithm, Mythili Ogirala May 2005

Multi-Resolution Dental Image Registration Based On Genetic Algorithm, Mythili Ogirala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The Automated Dental Identification System (ADIS) is a Post Mortem Dental Identification System. This thesis presents dental image registration, required for the preprocessing steps of the image comparison component of ADIS. We proposed a multi resolution dental image registration based on genetic algorithms. The main objective of this research is to develop techniques for registration of extracted subject regions of interest with corresponding reference regions of interest.;We investigated and implemented registration using two multi resolution techniques namely image sub sampling and wavelet decomposition. Multi resolution techniques help in the reduction of search data since initial registration is carried at lower …
