Utility Of The Severity-Of-Illness Score For Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (Scorten) In Pediatric Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Patients, Nina Kb Gust, Rebecca M. Adams, Ashley Frei, Michelle Coughlin Md, Justin Klein Md, Elika Ridelman Ph.D, Christina Shanti Md

Medical Student Research Symposium

Introduction

The Severity-of-Illness Score for Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SCORTEN) is a scoring system that seeks to predict in-hospital mortality for disorders affecting skin integrity. The scoring system has been validated and widely utilized in adults, but not pediatrics. This study aims to determine the accuracy of the SCORTEN in pediatrics.

Methods

A retrospective review of pediatric patients admitted at a verified pediatric burn center with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SJS/TEN) from 2008 to 2022 was performed.

Results

Twenty-seven eligible SJS/TEN patients were identified. Three patients were excluded due to incomplete data, allowing twenty-four patients to be analyzed. Ten patients had …

Exploring The Relationship Of Varying Hydrocephalus Severity On Csf Dynamics In A Pediatric Hydrocephalus Rodent Model, Parker R. Fitzgerald, Grant Zydeck, Jeff Horbatiuk, Enoch Kim, Arjun Muralidharan, Carolyn A. Harris Phd Mar 2024

Exploring The Relationship Of Varying Hydrocephalus Severity On Csf Dynamics In A Pediatric Hydrocephalus Rodent Model, Parker R. Fitzgerald, Grant Zydeck, Jeff Horbatiuk, Enoch Kim, Arjun Muralidharan, Carolyn A. Harris Phd

Medical Student Research Symposium

Hydrocephalus causes neurological effects and high intracranial pressure (ICP) in the pediatric condition. Studies observing the relationship between ICP and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production in an electrical resistance model have been performed, but less has been done to define this relationship in living organisms. This study explored CSF flow dynamics as a consequence of hydrocephalus severity utilizing a novel model.

The model induced hydrocephalus in rats through injecting 30-50 micrometers of 25% (w/v) kaolin into the cisterna magna to obstruct CSF outflow. After 15-16 days of acclimation, the rats were anesthetized with isoflurane. A Transonic SP200 pressure transducer was inserted …

Vaccine Hesitancy Among Youth Living With Hiv In Detroit, Madeline B. Simone Mar 2024

Vaccine Hesitancy Among Youth Living With Hiv In Detroit, Madeline B. Simone

Medical Student Research Symposium

Vaccine hesitancy among youth with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was evaluated to determine if the pandemic affected vaccine acceptance. A retrospective chart review was conducted to analyze vaccine rates over a five-year (pre-post COVID) in one university-based clinic. Results indicated a variation in acceptance rates between vaccines, with the MenACWY, MenB, tetanus, and HPV having the highest acceptance rates and COVID-19 and annual flu vaccine having the lowest acceptance rates. Vaccine hesitancy did not correlate with HIV treatment hesitancy nor with aversion to needles. Negative messaging around vaccines from a variety of sources appeared to be the primary factor in …

The Impact Of Caregiver And Community Education On Influenza Vaccination Acceptance, Austin Mueller, Sandra Bronni Md, Jenny Lachance, Ruba Allabwani Md, Bianca Yaldo Md, Abigail Howell Mar 2023

The Impact Of Caregiver And Community Education On Influenza Vaccination Acceptance, Austin Mueller, Sandra Bronni Md, Jenny Lachance, Ruba Allabwani Md, Bianca Yaldo Md, Abigail Howell

Medical Student Research Symposium

Introduction: Pediatric populations are particularly vulnerable to influenza, and rely on parental approval of the pediatric influenza vaccine (PIV). We conducted a survey to better understand our community’s perspective on the PIV.

Methods: An urban pediatric clinic’s records were gathered for the 2017-2019 flu seasons (i.e., pre-survey period). Surveys were distributed during the 2019-2020 flu season to assess vaccination status and their reasoning for acceptance or rejection of the PIV for their child(ren). Children vaccination rates were divided into 3 groups: 6 months-3 years, 3-5 years, and 5-18 years.

Results: During the 2017-2018 flu season, the overall vaccination rate (n=1791) …

Understanding Asthma Care And Management Challenges In Pediatric Patients, Alexander Wind, Priya Spencer, Amy Delaroche Mar 2023

Understanding Asthma Care And Management Challenges In Pediatric Patients, Alexander Wind, Priya Spencer, Amy Delaroche

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background:

Asthma is a common pediatric health condition with highly variable manifestations. It may require daily management with medications and lifestyle adjustments throughout childhood. Due to the varied severity of the disease, effective management of asthma can place undue demands and challenges on asthmatic children and their families.

Objective:

To understand the challenges families face in managing their child’s asthma.

Methods:

Currently ongoing since November 18, 2021, this study enrolls 5-11 years old presenting with an acute asthma exacerbation to the emergency room of a tertiary care children’s hospital. We use structured questionnaires to collect information on …

Cerebral Palsy: Wayne State University Giving Hope In A Small (Nano) Way, Julie O'Connor Sep 2010

Cerebral Palsy: Wayne State University Giving Hope In A Small (Nano) Way, Julie O'Connor

New Science

Cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that appears in infancy or early childhood and permanently affects body movement and muscle coordination, affects 10,000 newborns yearly and 800,000 people overall in the U.S. It occurs as a result of injury to the developing brain that happens before birth or sometimes during the first few months or years of life. Conditions such as prematurity, maternal infections, placental abnormalities and infections such as meningitis or encephalitis that occur in the newborn period may result in brain injury producing cerebral palsy. A team of researchers from the College of Engineering, School of Medicine and the …
