The rapidly activating and inactivating voltage-gated K(+) (Kv) current, I(A), is broadly expressed in neurons and is a key regulator of action potential repolarization, repetitive firing, backpropagation (into dendrites) of action potentials, and responses to synaptic inputs. Interestingly, results from previous studies on a number of neuronal cell types, including hippocampal, cortical, and spinal neurons, suggest that macroscopic I(A) is composed of multiple components and that each component is likely encoded by distinct Kv channel alpha-subunits. The goals of the experiments presented here were to test this hypothesis and to determine the molecular identities of the Kv channel alpha-subunits that …

Anatomic Correlates Of Strial Presbycusis In Recombinant Inbred Mouse Strains, Christina M. Walkonis
Independent Studies and Capstones
This project attempts to identify anatomic features that predict the range of the ‘normal’ endocochlear potential in young inbred mice. Cochlear lateral wall histologic metrics were compared in recombinant inbred (RI) mouse strains formed from BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice.
Effect Of Unilateral Hearing Loss On The Speech-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Response In The Presence Of Noise, Kristin Elizabeth Musser
Effect Of Unilateral Hearing Loss On The Speech-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Response In The Presence Of Noise, Kristin Elizabeth Musser
Independent Studies and Capstones
Speech-evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were acquired in quiet and in the presence of noise at two study sessions to investigate 1) test-retest variability and 2) subcortical representation of speech stimuli. Participants were adults with normal hearing in both ears who listened monaurally and adults with unilateral deafness. Results indicate consistency in responses across sessions and several differences between hearing groups for magnitudes of discrete components.

Outcomes Of Conventional Amplification For Pediatric Unilateral Hearing Loss, Lauren A. Wendorf
Independent Studies and Capstones
Although some children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) are at-risk for educational difficulties and behavioral problems, research in treatment outcomes for pediatric UHL is limited. The objective of this study was to examine the benefits of a conventional hearing aid in children with mild to moderately severe UHL, using speech perception measures and subjective assessments from the child, parent, and teacher.

Efficacy Of The Speech Intelligibility Index As An Intervention Tool With Pediatric Cancer Patients, Megan Cahill
Efficacy Of The Speech Intelligibility Index As An Intervention Tool With Pediatric Cancer Patients, Megan Cahill
Independent Studies and Capstones
This study evaluates the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) as a tool to describe hearing loss and predict when hearing aids would be appropriate for pediatric oncology patients who have received or are currently receiving cisplatin. The efficacy of the SII is compared to the Brock grade which is commonly used for patients with ototoxic hearing loss secondary to cisplatin treatment. The SII is a discrete measure that precisely reflects the patient’s functional hearing status and is highly correlated with the need for audiologic intervention.
The Effect Of Talker Age And Gender On Speech Perception Of Pediatric Cochlear Implant Users, Jillian B. Levine
The Effect Of Talker Age And Gender On Speech Perception Of Pediatric Cochlear Implant Users, Jillian B. Levine
Independent Studies and Capstones
Most clinically-employed speech materials for testing hearing impaired individuals are recordings made by adult male talkers. The author examined the possible effect of talker age and gender on the speech perception of children through the use of 1) two speech perception tests, each with four talker types (adult males, adult females, 10-12 year olds, 5-7 year olds), and 2) two groups of pediatric listeners: normal-hearing (NH) and cochlear implant users (CI).
