Examining The Impact Of Parental Self-Efficacy On The Early Intervention Process For Families With A Child Who Is Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Anna Magee Gandy
Independent Studies and Capstones
This literature review examines the relationship between parental self-efficacy and the family’s involvement in the early intervention process of their child who is deaf or hard of hearing as well as the ongoing participation in his or her education. Methods used to improve this self-efficacy and implications for further research in the field of deaf education are discussed.
Spectral Resolution And Speech Understanding In Children And Young Adults With Bimodal Devices, Holly Johanna Bridges
Spectral Resolution And Speech Understanding In Children And Young Adults With Bimodal Devices, Holly Johanna Bridges
Independent Studies and Capstones
Tests of spectral modulation detection and speech understanding were administered to children and young adults with hearing loss who use bimodal devices (one cochlear implant and one hearing aid at the non-implanted ear). Spectral modulation detection performance increases with participant’s age, and better speech recognition scores are associated with better audibility (SII or PTA).
Cognitive Consequences Of Degraded Speech: The Effect Of Background Noise, Noise-Vocoded Speech And Low-Pass Filtering On Short Story Recall, Laura Anne Horowitz
Cognitive Consequences Of Degraded Speech: The Effect Of Background Noise, Noise-Vocoded Speech And Low-Pass Filtering On Short Story Recall, Laura Anne Horowitz
Independent Studies and Capstones
Recall accuracy for speech-degraded short stories was assessed in young adults with normal hearing sensitivity. Stories were presented in the clear, or in noise vocoded, low-pass filtered, or background noise conditions of varying difficulty. Propositional scoring was used to determine the accuracy of participants’ recall. No significant effect on short story recall accuracy was observed for the degraded listening conditions. These results suggest that young adult listeners may be less susceptible to the extra cognitive challenge associated with degraded speech than might be predicted by the effortfulness hypothesis.
The Effect Of Anti-Inflammatory Drugs On Hair Cell Regeneration In The Zebrafish Lateral Line, Sarah C. Garbo
The Effect Of Anti-Inflammatory Drugs On Hair Cell Regeneration In The Zebrafish Lateral Line, Sarah C. Garbo
Independent Studies and Capstones
Hair cell death and regeneration on the three distal-most neuromasts in the posterior lateral line of zebrafish larvae were investigated after neomycin treatment. Treatment with ibuprofen, dexamethasone and salicylate examined the role of a normal inflammatory response on hair cell regeneration. Regeneration was observed 48 hours post-treatment indicating these reagents have no effect on the regeneration process.
The Early Language Environment And Effect Of Parental Counseling On Adult Language Exposure Of Children With Unilateral And Mild Bilateral Hearing Loss, Anita Marie Calwas
The Early Language Environment And Effect Of Parental Counseling On Adult Language Exposure Of Children With Unilateral And Mild Bilateral Hearing Loss, Anita Marie Calwas
Independent Studies and Capstones
This pilot study investigated the early language environment of children with unilateral and mild to moderate bilateral hearing loss. A one-time educational session with a parent is assessed for its ability to increase parental speech to children with unilateral and mild to moderate bilateral hearing loss.
An Analysis Of The Problem Solving Skills Of Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Angelina T.G. Laurent
An Analysis Of The Problem Solving Skills Of Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Angelina T.G. Laurent
Independent Studies and Capstones
Literature Review: Problem-solving skills are important to reasoning through everyday situations, and underlie social competence and academic achievement. Cognitive skills such as theory of mind and executive function contribute to problem-solving ability. Children who are deaf or hard of hearing often present with delays in these areas. Data Analysis: Data for 10 students who are deaf or hard of hearing who were administered the Test of Problem Solving – Elementary, Third Edition is analyzed. Results: Problem-solving abilities of students who are deaf or hard of hearing tend to fall on the lower end of the average range, where the average …
Development Of The Hear Smart Card Sort Noise Assessment Program, Lana Marie Joseph
Development Of The Hear Smart Card Sort Noise Assessment Program, Lana Marie Joseph
Independent Studies and Capstones
The goal of this Capstone Project was to create a web-based application that would allow hearing practitioners to assess and counsel patients on the hazards of past and present occupational and recreational hazardous noise exposure.
The Relationship Between Vulnerability To Temporary Versus Permanent Threshold Shifts In Balb, Cba/J And B6 Inbred Mice, Lauren Lewis
The Relationship Between Vulnerability To Temporary Versus Permanent Threshold Shifts In Balb, Cba/J And B6 Inbred Mice, Lauren Lewis
Independent Studies and Capstones
This study examines the dose-response relationship between TTS and PTS. Results indicate that susceptibility to TTS does not predict susceptibility to PTS and that long standing principles such as the equal energy hypothesis and early vulnerability period do not apply at low levels of noise.
Using Therapy Dogs To Improve Reading Fluency Of Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing: Is It Effective?, Jacklyn Marie Litzinger
Using Therapy Dogs To Improve Reading Fluency Of Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing: Is It Effective?, Jacklyn Marie Litzinger
Independent Studies and Capstones
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effectiveness of using therapy dog reading programs with children who are deaf or hard of hearing using cochlear implants and hearing aids. It includes a literature review of reading fluency and therapy dog programs.
The Role Of Prosocial Skills In Developing Language Of Young Children With Hearing Loss, Amanda Nicole Mcnamara
The Role Of Prosocial Skills In Developing Language Of Young Children With Hearing Loss, Amanda Nicole Mcnamara
Independent Studies and Capstones
This paper explores the ability of children with both normal hearing and impaired hearing to demonstrate examples of empathy, understanding, kindness, concern, cooperation, helpfulness and other prosocial behaviors.
