Leaders who lack succession planning strategies have the potential for adverse business outcomes. CEOs, senior leaders, and key decision makers in nonprofit organizations are concerned with business continuity because critical leadership strategies are essential for the strategic replacement of key personnel. Grounded in the resource-based view theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore succession planning strategies used in nonprofit organizations to ensure business continuity whenever leaders change. Thousands of newly established nonprofit organizations (NPOs) with long-lasting and needed missions disappear annually, which negatively impacts the nonprofit sector in general and the potential recipients of the discontinued NPOs' services.
