This study examined the experiences of former undocumented Jamaican immigrants who lived within the five boroughs of New York (Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island) during their period of being undocumented. This qualitative study used a virtual face-to-face interview method to inquire about the lived experiences of the 10 participants of the study. The Influences Of Cultural Norms On Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Of Female Adolescents In Jamaica, Valeta Wilson-James

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a global epidemic that became a national crisis affecting female adolescents in Jamaica. CSA occurs in all cultures, and prevention policies are well researched to address this problem. However, little is known about the influence that cultural norms have on CSA prevention policies in Jamaica. Other researchers have focused on CSA prevention policies, but none have explored the influences of cultural norms from the perception of law enforcement and child welfare workers. With the social-ecological model, this qualitative case study addressed the cultural norms influencing the enforcement of CSA prevention policies affecting Jamaican female adolescents. …

Student Engagement, Self-Regulation, Satisfaction, And Success In Online Learning Environments, Marcia Anne Commissiong

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

An increasing number of higher education institutions are seeking to widen access to education using online learning environments. Transitioning to this learning modality requires institutions to focus on factors related to the constructs of student engagement, self-regulation practices, and student satisfaction as predictors of student academic success. Little research has been conducted on the 3 constructs and perceptions of student success in the English-speaking Caribbean. This quantitative cross-sectional study explored the relationship of the constructs and student success using the theoretical frameworks of Knowles’ adult learning theory, self-regulation theory, and constructivism. An enhanced Moore interaction model was used to design …

Key Performance Indicators' Effects On Public Sector Infrastructure Project Efficiency In Grenada, Kelvin Michael George Jan 2019

Key Performance Indicators' Effects On Public Sector Infrastructure Project Efficiency In Grenada, Kelvin Michael George

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Grenada is 1 of 15 developing countries in Caribbean Community known as CARICOM. The infrastructure capital projects in these developing countries are plagued with an array of issues: unethical practices, inadequate supervision, lack of transparency and accountability, inadequate monitoring and evaluation, cost overruns, and inefficiencies. In the 1980s and 1990s, the International Monitory Fund and World Bank introduced a balanced scorecard engineered under the structural adjustment program, but it was unable to improve infrastructure project efficiencies. This qualitative case study sought to understand the role of management key performance indicators (KPIs) on public sector infrastructure capital project efficiency on the …

Perceptions Of First-Time Antiguan And Barbudan Mothers Towards Breastfeeding And Weaning, Janelle Dion Charles-Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Antigua and Barbuda, in the eastern Caribbean, is one of several countries with exclusive low breastfeeding rates and premature weaning. Researchers have demonstrated that babies exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life are better protected from childhood diseases and experience a better quality of life into adulthood, while early weaning is associated with morbidity and mortality. However, at 6 weeks postpartum, only 30% of Antiguan and Barbudan mothers are exclusively breastfeeding. Researchers have explained why mothers in general cease exclusive breastfeeding prematurely: insufficiency of breast milk, returning to paid employment, lack of social support; but an explanation specific …

Examining Intellectual Property Rights, Innovation And Technology Within The Caricom Single Market And Economy, Abiola Inniss

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME) firms operate under various laws and policies on intellectual property rights (IPRs), innovation and technology. International analyses and rankings rate the CSME countries' performance as poor in comparison with others at the same level of economic development. This results in negative impacts on the economic and social welfare of their communities. Research on North American and European students have reported moderate to severe levels of stress in more than 90% of students, which has been linked to negative health outcomes. However, there is a paucity of data on the stress of Caribbean students. Accordingly, the purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the experience of students in 2 year community colleges in the Caribbean. Using the theoretical foundation of …

Purposive sampling was used to recruit 8 women for semi-structured in-depth interviews. Data were collected on …

Burns' and Bass's transformational and transactional leadership theories were used as the framework for this study. Data were collected through a demographic questionnaire and semistructured interviews with a snowball sample of 10 participants. Data …

Employing Yin's recommended analysis process of iterative and repetitive review of case materials, the documents and interviews of key public …

School Leaders' Perceptions Of Caribbean Students' English Language Needs, Erica Pike

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Although British West Indian Caribbean (BWIC) immigrant students are considered to be English speaking students by U.S. public schools, many of them speak other languages. These students experience hardships and have unique remediation needs that many schools are not providing. The conceptual frameworks that guided this case study were sociocultural theory, acculturation theory, and leadership theory. These theories postulate that culture influences learning, second language acquisition is linked to adapting to a new culture, and leadership is important to implement system-wide changes. Qualitative data included interviews with 6 teachers and 3 administrators who work closely with BWIC students, New York …
