An unusually long data set was acquired at the sodium lidar facility at Colorado State University (41N, 105W), between Sep 18 and Oct 01, 2003, including a 9-day continuous observation. This time is long enough to average out the perturbations of gravity waves and short-period planetary waves. As such, it can be used to define tidal-period perturbations in temperature and horizontal wind. Assuming the sodium mixing ratio is a constant of motion, the observed tidal-period oscillation in sodium density follows that of vertical wind. Thus, the data set defines tidal-period perturbations of temperature and wind vector. The observed amplitudes and …

The USU Rayleigh Lidar (41.74°N 111.81°W) has been regularly used to measure temperatures in the middle atmosphere from 45 to 90 km. It is well suited for nightly observation; provides excellent vertical temperature resolution; and does not need external calibration. It began operation in August 1993 and a dataset spanning more than ten years has been collected. The analysis here includes 593 nightly temperature profiles from September 1993 through July 2003.
With many sources of variation in the atmosphere, all temperature effects cannot be easily detected. The largest source of temperature variation, and the easiest to measure, is the annual …

Rayleigh-Lidar Observations Of Mesospheric Mid-Latitude Density Climatology Above Utah State University, Eric M. Lundell, Vincent B. Wickwar
Rayleigh-Lidar Observations Of Mesospheric Mid-Latitude Density Climatology Above Utah State University, Eric M. Lundell, Vincent B. Wickwar

Data from Rayleigh lidars have been used extensively to derive temperatures in the mesospheric region of the atmosphere. However, these data have not been used extensively in a similar way to derive neutral densities. We report on one such mid-latitude, density climatology between 45 and ~90 km, based on nearly 600 good nights of observations carried out since 1993 at the Atmospheric Lidar Observatory (ALO) at Utah State University (41.7°N 111.8°W). They produce relative density profiles that are then normalized at 45 km to an empirical model, in this case the MSISe00 model. Despite this normalization, significant differences are found …

Community Development Assessment For The State Of Utah: A Guide To Utah's Community Development Environment, Community Development Department, Federal Reserve Bank Of San Francisco
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The Community Affairs Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco has developed a new series of reports for the nine states in the Twelfth District that both detail the demographic, economic, governmental, and institutional underpinnings of each state and provide an analysis of the various community development needs within each state. These reports, which we are calling “Environmental Assessments,” are meant to provide a framework for the array of community development activities that the department undertakes across the District. The hope is that the reports will not only provide a helpful compilation of existing community development needs and …

Planting Date Effects On The Germinability And Seedling Vigor Of Abutilon Theophrasti Seeds, R E. Nurse, A Ditommaso, Ricardo A. Ramirez
Biology Faculty Publications
Abutilon theophrasti (Malvaceae) is a troublesome annual weed in many maize and soybean cropping systems of Canada and the United States. Seeds of A. theophrasti exhibit physical dormancy. Differences in the growing environment of parent plants may influence the germinability of seeds and vigour of seedlings produced by this species because of variation in resource allocation to seed development. Thus, the germinability of seeds and subsequent seedling vigour were examined for A. theophrasti plants grown in monoculture at a density of 4.2 plants m -2 under varying natural photoperiods in central New York State. Treatments were established by transplanting A. …

Water Loss Estimates For Five Recently Transplanted Landscape Tree Species In A Semi-Arid Climate, Thayne Montague, Roger Kjelgren, Rick Allen, David Wester
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Over three growing seasons (1994-1996), water loss of five recently transplanted, balled and burlaped (B&B) tree species was investigated using below-ground, electronic weighing lysimeters. For each species, actual tree water loss was correlated with reference evapotranspiration (ETo) to create a water loss multiplier. At the beginning of each growing season a single tree was planted into each lysimeter. Selected species were London planetree (Platanus x acerifolia 'Bloodgood'), corkscrew willow (Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa'), littleleaf linden (Tilia cordataI 'Greenspire'), Norway maple (Acer platanoides 'Emerald Queen'), and green ash (Fraximus pennsylvanica 'Patmore'). Throughout each growing season, tress were well-watered and lysimeter mass and …

Historical Biogeography Of Lowland Species Of Toads (Bufo) Across The Trans-Mexican Neovolcanic Belt And The Isthmus Of Tehuantepec, Benson H. Morrill
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The eastern extension of the massive Trans-Mexican Neovolcanic Belt 1 (TMNB) contacts the Atlantic Coast in central Veracruz, Mexico. Although it is not a massive structure at this eastern terminus, the TMNB has nonetheless effected vicariance and subsequent speciation in several species groups, including bufonid toads and freshwater fishes. In this study, we examined mtDNA sequences (cyt b, 16S) from populations of two different species groups of toads (B. marinus, and the B. nebulifer-B. valliceps species pair) from a lowland transect across the eastern end of the TMNB. We also included samples from outside this region (e.g., Costa …

Under The Bridge: Poems By Faith Shepherd With Critical Introduction, Faith Shepherd
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The first poem with which I became fully engaged--that is, the first poem with which I interacted beyond one or two readings--was Wallace Stevens' "Autumn Refrain" my senior year in high school. At this point in my life, I was already enamored with literature, and I had written fair amounts of "poetry" for my high school creative writing classes. However, even though I occasionally enjoyed reading poetry and understood that its language tended to be more compact than other types of literature, if I didn't understand a poem after reading it through once or twice I set it aside and …

Design Sales And Marketing - An Investigational Study, Katrina Jeanne Kuddes
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Dating back to the ancient Mesopotamian era, design has been a fundamental instigator of creations and inventions, leading us to the world we have today. Everything we have is the result of design: communities, architecture, mechanics, plumbing, furniture, clothing, etc. Design starts, often quietly, in the mind of an individual as an idea; but the idea begins to breathe when committed to paper or tangibly created.

Airglow imager and dynasonde/imaging Doppler interferometer (IDI) radar wind measurements at Halley Station, Antarctica (75.6S, 26.6W) have been used to estimate the seasonal variation of the vertical fluxes of horizontal momentum carried by highfrequency atmospheric gravity waves. The cross-correlation coefficients between the vertical and horizontal wind perturbations were calculated from sodium (Na) airglow imager data collected during the austral winter seasons of 2000 and 2001. These were combined with wind velocity variances from coincident radar measurements to estimate the daily averaged upper limit of the vertical flux of horizontal momentum due to gravity waves. The resulting momentum flux at the …

We reported the observation of a mesospheric front with the properties of an undular bore by an OH imager, over the Fort Collins/Platteville area on 6/7 October 2002. Unlike the earlier bore observations, a Na lidar capable of measuring mesopause region temperature, zonal, and meridional winds was in operation concurrently. The lidar data confirm, for the first time, the existence of a collocated temperature inversion layer to serve as the ducting region for bore propagation, as required by the simple theory proposed by Dewan and Picard 6 years ago. In addition, the lidar data in principle provide sufficient information for …

As landscape water conservation becomes more important in the American West, pubic interest in using low water-use turfgrasses is increasing. Little is known about soil water extraction characteristics that contribute to low water use. We investigated how buffalograss (Buchloë dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), considered to be low and high water-use species, respectively, extract soil water in terms of rooting depth and use of available water. Leaf canopy temperature, air temperature, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were measured, and a relationship developed between leaf canopy temperature minus air temperature (TL-TA) and VPD for each species under …

Multiple images acquired in real-time from a confocal microscope in different illumination wavebands are used to construct a three-dimensional understanding of living cell signal propagation. Registration, fusion, and display of these images are performed in real-time using field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology to allow the biological scientist to observe time critical signaling processes as they occur. The registration and display system operates at a rate of up to 15 frames/s, and performs dark offset correction and noise reduction, followed by non-linear correction for lens warp and focal plane tilt, and finally correction for spatial mismatch between the different wavebands. …

Accomplishments prior to BCT Meeting/Phone Conference of 14 October 2004 Prior to 14 October 2004, the best pumping strategy USU achieved manually completely contains both PCE and TCE1 (within revised containment zones proposed by USU on that date), at the end of years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 5-year intervals thereafter. This strategy uses two new extraction wells (USUE3 and USUE4). The strategy did not utilize a recently constructed well EW-12B. USU did not previously know about EW-12B and the well package USU received did not indicate a well at its location, cell (3,58,43). On 14 October, USU also learned …
