Changing Times: A View From Cache Valley, 1890-1915, Charles S. Peterson Nov 1979

Changing Times: A View From Cache Valley, 1890-1915, Charles S. Peterson

Faculty Honor Lectures

For a quarter of a century I have been pursuing, in what I sometimes fear is a muddling quixotic way, the identity of Utah and of regions within it. This quest entered a new and direct phase a few years back when I was asked to write the Bicentennial History of Utah. As I toiled over the book, one of those obvious truths that now and then surface in the consciousness of each of us struck me with great force; in 1776 Utah had no practical existence whatever for Americans. Of course, the geographical region existed, but in what I …

Studies On The Allocation Of Water Over Space And Among Users In An Arid Environment, Jay C. Andersen, John E. Keith

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

After a decade in a long-tenn research program at Utah State Univers'ity it is appropriate to review the concepts, progress and possible changes in direction. In the late 1960's grants were received froln the Office of Water Resources and Technology and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Funding was also received from the Utah Center for Water Resources and the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. These grants enabled a beginning of the research using extensive linear programming models that is still underway, many grants and many people later. The list of publications at the end of this paper fonn the basis …

The Economics Department is an immensely productive group. Our endeavors are probably more diverse than any department on campus. This is a short review of major areas in the department. Research. We have research that ranges from the most applied, localized service type work to concerns with international monetary systems and trade. To be sure the major portion of our effort is highly localized and policy oriented. We thought you might be interested in a listing of publications for the past couple of years. An earlier couple of years is also there. Perhaps if we have a shortcoming in our …

Equatorial Electricfields During Magnetically Disturbed Conditions, 1. The Effect Of The Interplanetary Magneticfield, Bela G. Fejer, C. A. Gonzales, D. T. Farley, M. C. Kelley, R. F. Woodman

Bela G. Fejer

Radar measurements of E and F region drift velocities have been used to look for correlations between changes in equatorial electric fields and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The east-west component of the IMF appears to be unimportant, but the north-south component has some effect; rapid reversals from south to north are sometimes correlated with reversals of the equatorial east-west electric field during both daytime and nighttime. This is not always true, however, the IMF may reverse without any apparent effect at the equator. Furthermore, large equatorial field perturbations are sometimes observed when the IMF Bz is large and southward …

Dependence Of Equatorial Fregion Vertical Drifts On Season And Solar Cycle, Bela G. Fejer, D. T. Farley, R. F. Woodman, C. A. Calderon Sep 1979

Dependence Of Equatorial Fregion Vertical Drifts On Season And Solar Cycle, Bela G. Fejer, D. T. Farley, R. F. Woodman, C. A. Calderon

Bela G. Fejer

Vertical drift measurements have been made at Jicamarca for more than half a solar cycle. The data from periods of high and low activity are appreciably different. Daytime drift velocities during sunspot minimum are usually larger than during the maximum, while the opposite is true for nighttime periods. The evening reversal occurs earlier during sunspot minimum than during the maximum, but the morning reversal is not altered. The period of eastward electric field (upward drift) is thus shortest during sunspot minimum and local winter. By integrating the drift velocity data with respect to time, one can obtain a measure of …

It is an area where I have considerable personal interest but it also represents an area where much work has been done by others. Before I discuss the issue assigned however, I believe that a few bases must be touched to enable all of us to meet on common ground.

Water Use Tradeoffs Between Energy And Agriculture, John E. Keith, Rangesan Narayanan Sep 1979

Water Use Tradeoffs Between Energy And Agriculture, John E. Keith, Rangesan Narayanan

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

water availability and use has a history of conflict in the arid West, and the large-scale development of the energy resources in the Upper Colorado River Basin and the Great Basin can be expected to add to the competition for water. In addition, air and water quality have also become major parameters in the allocation decisions. It is not clear whether energy development will have a detrimental or beneficial effect on water quality in the region, at least with respect to salinity which is the currently acknowledged major qu al ity problem in the Colorado River System. The institutions and …

Drought Lessons From Agriculture, Herbert H. Fullerton Sep 1979

Drought Lessons From Agriculture, Herbert H. Fullerton

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The typical freshman in my classes and probably most of the American public will agree with the assertions that drought and water scarcity are "bad" and conservation and efficient water use are in some sense "good " . This sentiment is reflected by a wide array of public water projects, research, and educational programs which have as their justification more "goods" and/or fewer "bads" . The severe droughts of the 1930s and 1970s in the U.S. provide examples of how complex waterbased systems, such as agricultural production, respond to stress. It has been suggested that these examples possibly provide some …

The Function And Cost Of Market Milk Reserves And Balanceing Supply With Demand, Rondo A. Christensen, Douglas E. Petterson, Allen H. Swainston

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Milk marketing has changed over the years, and so have the functions performed by fluid milk handlers and dairy cooperatives. In the 1930s the typical situation was for local fluid milk processors to perform all the marketing functions starting with picking up the milk from independent dairymen at the farm, and ending with its delivery to the customer's doorstep. In most instances milk was picked up, processed and delivered daily. Each handler had to coordinate and balance his own milk supply and use. With sales about the same every day of the week, the major problem was balancing seasonal supplies …

Water And Land Use Planning For Some State Lands Near Moab, Utah, Eugene K. Israelsen, Lynn H. Davis

Reports

In an attempt to apply better management principles to the control of state lands, the Division of State Lands asked for the study of two questions concerning state administered lands near Moab, Utah. The first question deals with the Moab and Spanish Valleys while the second question applies to Castle Valley some 10 miles northeast of Moab. The Mill Creek Development Project is proposed to provide additional water for agriculture and M & I use in the Moab and Spanish Valleys. The question for consideration is, "How much water from the Mill Creek Development Project Reservoir should the Division of …

Long-Term Effects Of Land Application Of Domestic Wastwater: Tooele, Utah, Slow-Rate Site, Volume 1: Field Investigation, James H. Reynolds, L. R. Anderson, R. W. Miller, W. F. Campbell, M. O. Braun

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Application of wastewater to the land has been designated a viable alternative for wastewater treatment by the Water Pollution Act Amendments of 1972 (PL 92-500). However, very little information is available concerning the long-term effects of applying wastewater to the land. The general objective of this study was to determine the long-term effects of employing secondary treated municipal wastewater as irrigation water. The study compared the quality of soils, crops, groundwater, and applied water to a site receiving normal irrigation water (control site) to a site (treated site) which had utilized seondary treated municipal effluent for irrigation water during a …

An Investigation Of The Environmental Relationships Of Selected Forest Habitat Types In Northern Utah, Penelope Morgan Lawton Aug 1979

An Investigation Of The Environmental Relationships Of Selected Forest Habitat Types In Northern Utah, Penelope Morgan Lawton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It was the purpose of this study to examine an assumption basic to the forest habitat type classification system. Included in each habitat type is all land capable of supporting a single climax plant community type. In practice, land is grouped based on species camposition, relative abundance, and successional trends of the vegetation supported by the land. Land units of the same habitat type are assumed to represent similar environments. No previous critical evaluation of this assumption has been done.

Land in the study area had been previously classified under the habitat type system. Relationships between vegetation and environment were …

Estimating Machinery Repair Allowance: Programmed For The Texas Instrument 59, Larry K. Bond Aug 1979

Estimating Machinery Repair Allowance: Programmed For The Texas Instrument 59, Larry K. Bond

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

OBJECTIVE: This program is designed to aid the farm manager in deciding between keeping his presently owned mach ine or trading for a newer one. The approach is simple. An allowance for repairs is estimated, using the savings in fixed costs that would be expected by keeping the machine, plus the average annual repair cost during the period of ownership . If the repair allowance appears adequate for the extended period of use being considered, then serious consideration should be given to keeping the machine. There is no provision for considering tax advantages associated with purchasing new machinery.

Machinery Cost Analysis: Programmed For The Tesas Instrument 59, Larry K. Bond

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this program is to aid the farm manager in making decisions relative to owning and operating farm machinery. It does two things: 1) It calculates total fixed and total operatlng costs and sums them to get total costs, then calculates these costs on a per hour and per acre basis. And 2) Based on these costs, and the going custom rates, it will estimate the amount of money you can justify spending for a machine, or tell you the minimum size of operation to justify the investment. If you are a custom operator, it calculates the …

Geology, Characteristics, And Resource Potential Of The Low-Temperature Geothermal System Near Midway, Wasatch County, Utah, James F. Kohler Jun 1979

Geology, Characteristics, And Resource Potential Of The Low-Temperature Geothermal System Near Midway, Wasatch County, Utah, James F. Kohler

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Recent awareness of the finite nature of fossil-fuel resources has resulted in an increased interest in alternate sources of energy such as geothermal. To evaluate the geothermal energy potential of the hot springs system near Midway, Wasatch Co., Utah, consideration was given to heat flow, water chemistry, and structural controls.

Abnormal heat flow was indicated qualitatively by snow-melt patterns and quantitatively by heat-flow measurements that were obtained from two of four temperature-gradient wells drilled in the area. These measurements indicated that the area north of the town of Midway is characterized by heat flow equal to 321.75 mW/m2, which is …

Selected Projects In Costume Design, Michael Eagan

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In his play Picnic, William Inge has created a study in male and female roles--or rather, the roles and types which society forces on them, and which they more frequently force on themselves. The people in this play are not conscious of their roles as roles. There is no free spirit portrayed in the attempt to throw off his or her classification. Even Madge, with her dreams of escape from the confines of small-town life, is acting in accordance with the behavior patterns of her particular genus. This play does not attack the male and female character typing which …

Criteria For The Selection Of Students Into A Counseling Program: A Review Of Literature, Douglas N. Reeder

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In his paper, "Graduate Education in Psychology - A Passionate Statement" Carl Rogers (1957) has stated, 'We are doing an unintelligent, ineffectual and wasteful job of preparing psychologists, to the detriment of our discipline and society. “” He further stated, 'We should be selecting and training individuals for creative effectiveness in seeking out and discovering the significant new knowledge which is meeded." He then examines ten implicit assumptions on which programs of graduate education appear to be based, showing them to be totally inadequate in training future psychologists. It is time to reevaluate the purpose, procedure, and content of graduate …

Management Studies: Roosevelt City Fire Department And Vehicle Maintenance Division, Roosevelt, Utah, Rendal D. Esplin

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The recent and rapid development of energy producing natural resources experienced in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming has created major growth problems for roosevelt City as well as all other political subdivisions located within the region. Emphasis on efficient management of public programs has been one of several methods utilized by Roosevelt City to meet the growing demand for municipal services. This is necessary as some services such as fire protection, are managed jointly with other municipalities. Then too, with inflation driving up operating costs, it is essential to carefully control expenditures of all public programs. The management studies conducted on …

The Economics Of Fertility In Utah, Carl E. Enomoto May 1979

The Economics Of Fertility In Utah, Carl E. Enomoto

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purposes of this thesis are to determine the economic forces influencing birth rates in Utah and to compare their influences with those found in similar studies for the United States. To do this, an economic model describing fertility behavior was used. Data for the model was collected primarily from Census Bureau reports for the year 1970.
