The School of Accountancy is excited to report that we continue to rank in the “Top 50” graduate and undergraduate programs in The Public Accounting Report 2017 Annual Rankings. For programs with 17 or fewer faculty members, the undergraduate program is ranked #3 and the masterʼs program is ranked #8. The overall ranking of all schools placed the undergraduate program at #40 and the masterʼs program at #50. A team of Huntsman School students placed third in a national real estate competition, ahead of Harvard, BYU, Wisconsin Madison, Pepperdine and others in the 2016 Real Confidence University Challenge. The annual competition, comprised of 32 universities and colleges with over 190 students, gives hands-on learning experience in public and private commercial real estate investing. The performance of each sectorʼs weighted investment selection was calculated with its respective benchmark return data provided by NAREIT, NCREIF, Markit and Giliberto-Levy Commercial Mortgage Performance Index. This summer, I spent several weeks in Southeast Asia on a Global Learning Experience with the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. We traveled to Vietnam, Thailand, China, and Hong Kong to meet with businesses, government agencies, and international organizations. Our group included Dean Anderson, Dr. Vijay Kannan, Dr. Zsolt Ugray, and 13 students in various majors in the Huntsman School of Business.

Sixteen students, along with two faculty members, traveledto New York City earlier this summer for three days of career exploration visits with finance firms. The ten visits included large firms such as Goldman Sachs, KPMG, and Bloomberg as well as S&P, Time Inc, and JetBlue. The students also took part in an event that brought together alumni in the area. Some students who are beginning the MAcc program in the Fall 2017 semester or later may have the benefit of paying in-state tuition to obtain their MAcc degree due to the programʼs recent designation as a Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP) by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). Because of this prestigious designation, students who select the Personal Financial Planning (PFP) specialization in the MAcc program and who have residency in any of the 16 states in the WICHE region will pay in-state tuition through the duration of the program.

The Master of Human Resources (MHR) online program at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University ranks fourth in nation, according to Human Resources MBA, a resource guide for the human resources industry. This top ranking measured the Huntsman MHR program against 200 accredited schools with online programs aligning to the Society for Human Resource Managementʼs recommended guidelines for a quality HR education. The Huntsman Schoolʼs ranking surpassed other notable schools such as Pennsylvania State University, Villanova University, University of Houston, and University of Maryland.

It has been more than 30 years since Dr. Daniel Holland, an Associate Professor in the Management Department in the Huntsman School of Business who teaches entrepreneurship and strategy, served in Japan as a voluntary representative of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has always hoped to return to the culture and people he grew to love, so the Fulbright Programʼs post detailing Japanʼs government initiative to focus on entrepreneurship caught his eye. He feels honored to receive a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to teach in Kyoto, Japan, for a portion of the 2017-2018 academic year.

Many Americans feel stress and uncertainty about their finances. In a recent Federal Reserve report, nearly one-third of survey respondents said theyʼre “just getting by” financially, and about one-quarter reported struggling to pay bills. Almost half of the respondents said they would be unable to come up with just $400 for an emergency. Emotional responses to financial stress can further compound the effects of financial stress. Financial strain may also have serious consequences for families and marriages. The Institute for Divorce Financial Analysis reports that money issues are the third highest cause of divorce, at 22%.

USU Accounting alum, Lancelot Giles ʼ09, recently received the Esther R. Sawyer Research award at The Institute of Internal Auditorsʼ 75th annual conference in New York. The Sawyer Award is an annual worldwide competition open to undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in internal auditing at an Internal Auditing Education Partnership university. He received the award for his submission, “Achieving and Maintaining Professional Competency as an Internal Auditor in a High-Change Environment.”

A research article, published in the September 2016 issue of the Journal of the Association for Information Systems, investigates how organizations pursuing different business strategies can generate performance gains from information technology (IT). The study, co-authored with Paul Tallon (Loyola University Maryland), Tim Coltman (University of Wollongong), and Rajeev Sharma (University of Technology Sydney), finds that traditional approaches for assessing the alignment between IT and business strategy are unable to explain how IT is used to drive new strategies and create future business benefits.
