Criminal Justice Interventions For Individuals With Mental Health Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review, Fidelis Azeke, Nassrine Noureddine
Pacific Journal of Health
In the criminal law, with few exceptions, for a finding of guilt, the physical act and the state of mind to commit the offense must be present at the time of the commission of the offense. People with mental disabilities often lack the state of mind required to commit the offense for which they are eventually charged for and or convicted. This paper examines the effectiveness of some past and present criminal justice system interventions that addresses the mental health disabilities of criminal offenders pre-adjudicative proceedings. A systematic review of the literature was used to examine past and present criminal …

Expanding Statutes Of Limitations For Sex Crimes: Bad Public Policy, Michael Vitiello
McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles
The Victims’ Rights Movement has been one of the most consequential political forces in the United States over the past fifty-plus years. It has scored major legislative victories across the country. Every state and the federal government have adopted major laws advanced by the movement. After years of expanding prison populations, many policymakers and scholars have begun to question the wisdom of many of the movement’s legislative victories.
Despite current pushback against the movement, the movement and members of the public are pushing for the elimination or dramatic extensions of statutes of limitations for sex offenses and child-sex offenses. Such …

Narcolepsy is a debilitating sleep disorder that presents with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and cataplexy, which is a sudden paralysis of muscle tone triggered by strong emotions such as laughing. It is also associated with many other disorders, including psychiatric disorders, neurologic illnesses, and medication side effects. Common causes of delayed and incorrect diagnoses of these conditions include lack of physician familiarity with narcolepsy symptoms and comorbidities which mask narcolepsy signs and symptoms. Current pharmacologic therapies include Modafinil and Armodafinil for EDS and sodium oxybate for cataplexy. This review discusses the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, presentation, treatment of narcolepsy, and …

The African American And The California Basic Skills Requirement For Teaching, Willie C. Thomas Ii
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study examines why the passing rates of African Americans on the CBEST are the lowest in California at 60%. Madkins (2011) identified licensure testing as a significant reason why African Americans cannot enter the teaching progression. According to Darling-Hammond et al. (2016), California has an ongoing credentialed teacher shortage. An even more significant need is for teachers of color. According to the California Department of Education (2021), 60% of the state’s educator workforce is White, while the state student body, multicultural and multilingual, is only slightly more than 22% White. While licensure testing for teachers is required in all …
