Healthcare providers and patients strive for optimal outcomes with a growing trend to embed the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) into mainstream care delivery by practicing dentists. The foundations of future best practice are built at dental school. How do we evaluate the outcome of an EBP syllabus?

This study describes the use of the KACE assessment tool to assess the learning outcomes of final year DDS students who had completed an EBP program. The use of a validated instrument to measure four dimensions, knowledge, attitudes about it, familiarity with sources for accessing evidence and confidence in critical appraisal skills …

Polymer Chemistry Of Dental Adhesives, Alia J. Rubaie, Karen A. Schulze Aug 2022

Polymer Chemistry Of Dental Adhesives, Alia J. Rubaie, Karen A. Schulze

Pacific Journal of Health

Dental adhesives are water soluble, non-toxic materials that bind composite resins to dentin and enamel. Adhesive systems are dependent on a polymerization process at the interface and require different moieties to prepare the substrate to effectively interact with the tooth surface. Due to their critical role in restorative procedures, many chemists are interested in strengthening the adhesive bond strength at the interface. This review paper covers the evolution of dental adhesive systems over time and provides an extensive overview of what components make up a dental adhesive system. Additionally, this article explores the common issues found in adhesive systems, and …

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Boswellia trees, found throughout the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia, are the source of frankincense oil. Since antiquity, frankincense has been traded as a precious commodity, but it has also been used for the treatment of chronic disease, inflammation, oral health, and microbial infection. More recently, the bioactive components of Boswellia trees have been identified and characterized for their effects on cancer, microbial infection (especially infection by oral pathogens), and inflammation. Most studies have focused on cell lines, but more recent research has also investigated effects in animal models of disease. As natural products are considered to …

Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Pathophysiology, Differential Diagnosis, And Treatment Options, Andrew Han, Carver Montgomery, Alexandra Zamora, Emilie Winder, Adam M. Kaye, Caroline Carroll, Alfonzo Aquino, Juyeon Kakazu, Alan David Kaye Jun 2022

Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Pathophysiology, Differential Diagnosis, And Treatment Options, Andrew Han, Carver Montgomery, Alexandra Zamora, Emilie Winder, Adam M. Kaye, Caroline Carroll, Alfonzo Aquino, Juyeon Kakazu, Alan David Kaye

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles

Purpose of Review
This is a comprehensive review of the most recent literature on glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN), a relatively rare form of neuropathic facial pain. It covers the epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, and differential diagnosis given that glossopharyngeal neuralgia can often be confused with other facial pain syndromes. Finally, we extensively review recent findings regarding medical or conservative measures, minimally invasive, and surgical options for potentially treating and managing glossopharyngeal neuralgia.

Recent Findings
An in-depth analysis of the recent literature indicates that glossopharyngeal neuralgia is not only rare but its etiology and pathophysiology are complex and are often secondary to …

The Role Of Inflammation In Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition In Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Literature Review, Preliminary Data, And Proposal Of Experiments, Rachel Choi, Jisoo Kim, Adria Frazier, Takahiro Chino May 2022

The Role Of Inflammation In Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition In Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Literature Review, Preliminary Data, And Proposal Of Experiments, Rachel Choi, Jisoo Kim, Adria Frazier, Takahiro Chino

Excellence Day

The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a trans-differentiation process of epithelial cells into motile mesenchymal cells. It plays an integral role in embryonic development, wound healing and cancer progression. During EMT, epithelial cells lose their cellular polarity due to the loss of intercellular adhesion and acquire migratory and invasive characteristics associated with mesenchymal cells. EMT is tightly regulated by a number of distinct molecular processes which allow its initiation and progression to completion. These processes include activation of transcription factors, expression of specific cell-surface proteins, reorganization and expression of cytoskeletal proteins, production of extracellular matrix-degrading enzymes and changes in the expression …

Sex Differences In The Immune Response To Chronic Periodontitis, John Huang, Amy Tsai, Ina Stelzer, Dorien Feyaerts, William Choi, David Vang, Edward Ganio, Dyani Gaudilliere, Brice Gaudilliere, Xiaoyuan Han May 2022

Sex Differences In The Immune Response To Chronic Periodontitis, John Huang, Amy Tsai, Ina Stelzer, Dorien Feyaerts, William Choi, David Vang, Edward Ganio, Dyani Gaudilliere, Brice Gaudilliere, Xiaoyuan Han

Excellence Day

Chronic Periodontitis (ChP) is an inflammatory condition that results from oral dysbiosis and host immune dysfunction. Epidemiologic evidence has shown that men are more susceptible to ChP than women. Despite gender differences in behavior and socioeconomic status influencing oral health, the biological sex-associated immunological mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of ChP are unclear. The objective of this study is to identify sex differences in the immune responses to chronic periodontitis.

The Effects Of Cigarette Smoke On Sars-Cov-2 Infection In Human Gecs, Kaitlyn Liu, Harmony Matshik Dakafay, David Ojcius, Cassio Silva

Excellence Day

A large body of evidence shows the harmful effects of cigarette smoke to oral and systemic health. Recently, a link between smoking and susceptibility to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was proposed. Here, we examined the effects of cigarette smoke on SARS-CoV-2 infection in human gingival epithelial cells (GECs) to better understand the mechanisms involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection in cells of the oral cavity.

Biomarkers Of Orthodontic Tooth Movement, Max Kazantcev, Kamal Thapaliya, Marie Tolarova, Miroslav Tolar May 2022

Biomarkers Of Orthodontic Tooth Movement, Max Kazantcev, Kamal Thapaliya, Marie Tolarova, Miroslav Tolar

Excellence Day

Orthodontic tooth movement leads to remodeling of periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and gingiva. Tooth movement is characterized by bone deposition at sites of tension and bone resorption at pressure sites. Due to a sterile inflammatory process in the PDL space, a flow rate of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is increased and its composition is modified. Various cell-signaling pathways are activated, which ultimately stimulate PDL turnover. Biochemical and cellular processes associated with orthodontic tooth movement may be better understood if we study changes of specific biomarkers in GCF during orthodontic therapy. Such information can be used clinically to choose a proper …
