Student-Led Podcasting For Engineering Education, E. Alpay, Shelly Gulati
All Faculty Presentations - School of Engineering and Computer Science
The use of podcasts is challenging traditional communication methods in higher education, with the potential for creating highly engaging and flexible resources for learning and development. In a similar way, podcasts are helping to facilitate a stronger student identity and community within learning environments, replacing traditional student newsletter and website approaches. In this work, an innovative podcasting approach is presented in which there is a strong student-centred and student-led premise to foster and advance engineering education related uses. Podcasts are intended to cover a range of relevant engineering topics such as sharing student views on global and scientific developments, raising …

Faith And Politics In The Post-Secular Age: The Promise Of President Obama, Francis J. Mootz Iii
Faith And Politics In The Post-Secular Age: The Promise Of President Obama, Francis J. Mootz Iii
McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles
If the modern era is properly characterized as the 'age of secularism' - a time when constitutional democracies finally have shed the last vestiges of church authority from the political realm and embrace a rationalist and humanist perspective - then the United States appears to be outside the Western mainstream. In this paper I explore how the relationship between politics and religious faith in the United States might be seen as part of the narrative of secularism that defines most other Western countries, even as the differences in the American experience might suggest an evolution of this narrative. My thesis …
Theft As ‘Involuntary Gifting’ Among The Tacana Of Northern Bolivia, Laura A. Bathurst
Theft As ‘Involuntary Gifting’ Among The Tacana Of Northern Bolivia, Laura A. Bathurst
School of International Studies Faculty Articles
It has been well established in the anthropological literature that reciprocity, in its various cultural forms, is simultaneously produced by and productive of social relationships; it both comments upon social relationships and plays a role in creating them. However, this has generally been demonstrated using positive forms of reciprocity. In this paper I examine how theft, as a form of negative reciprocity, fit with a wider set of positive reciprocal obligations among the Tacana in northeastern Bolivia in 2001-2002. Theft, I argue, was part of a coherent cultural system in which a material basis, social norms, and values and beliefs …

Transformative Learning : An Examination Of The Impact Of Short-Term Study Abroad, Jesse Carson Pugh
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
When selecting a study abroad program, some students undertake a semester or academic-year study abroad program, while other students undertake a two-to eight-week study abroad program. Both study abroad opportunities allow students to become immersed in a culture different from their own. This research project is an exploratory study that looks at the impact of short-term study abroad programs on undergraduates at a public institution. This study examines how participants change in regards to their understanding of the host culture, explores what students learn about their host cultures, and looks at the intercultural development that the students gain from spending …
The Impact Of Using Situational Management Communication Styles In Intercollegiate Athletics, Glen A. Sisk
The Impact Of Using Situational Management Communication Styles In Intercollegiate Athletics, Glen A. Sisk
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study examined if supervisors within intercollegiate athletic settings have a higher tendency to use task-oriented management styles than supervisors outside of athletics. The study also assessed if athletic supervisors would have a higher tendency to adapt their leadership style based on situational factors. 214 respondents were asked to complete a five-part survey, comprised of two management communication styles, emotional intelligence, the Leadership Adaptability Style Index, and demographic information. Two additional questions raised in the study posed the same questions in relation to all respondents within athletics and those outside athletics. The results showed no significant differences in management styles …
