University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is thus the purpose of this study to explore the educational aspirations of a group of high school students whose ethnic background is Chinese with the intention of filling the gap in sociological research that has overlooked the Chinese community. As there are many opposing theories on the subject of aspiration, this case study of Chinese students seeks to clarify some of the theoretical perspectives and their problems. Moreover, any study of a minority group would inevitably expose some of the problems that the group faces. Once the nature of the problems is identified and understood, hopefully, solutions may …

The Development Of A Five-Year Budget For The San Joaquin Delta Community College District, Lawrence Albert Dericco

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The specific problem of this study was to develop a five-year budget for the San Joaquin Delta Community College District. A ten-year budget would necessarily be less accurate, since the longer the projection, the more vague and theoretical it becomes.

The purposes of this study were to: (1) review the literature pertaining to long-range budgeting, (2) …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One hundred years may or may not seem a long time. To the geologist, one hundred years is but a moment. To the historian it may represent a convenient yardstick to measure events or empires. To the average individual, one hundred years may seem a short time when history tells us that old world civilization was brought to the shores of California in 1542 by Cabrillo, and the first Franciscan mission was established in 1769. One hundred years is a long time When it includes such a period of phenomenal events as mankind has experienced in the past ten decades. …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Stockton is a city suffering from the sudden realization that it is no longer a small farm town, end that in the process of becoming a moderate-sized city, a community faces inevitable growing pains.

The municipal recreation phase of city government well illustrates this fact. Because of the great need for expansion in this field, and because the city is now just beginning to rise to meet the occasion, a study of the Recreational Department and the program of the Metropolitan Recreation Commission in Stockton City Government and San Joaquin County, is a particularly interesting activity.

In contrast to many …

A Study Of The Present And Possible Use Of Radio In Secondary Schools In The Vicinity Of Stockton, Bobbin Cay Peck Crabbe

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is worth any trouble it takes to rearrange and organize the high school or college schedule these days to enable the students to hear first hand the most important pronouncements being made by history-making leaders. The student who missed hearing Chamberlain or Hitler because he was forced by an inflexible school program to conjugate German verbs or to report on the Elizabethan period of English history, was deprived of some real education.1

In the above paragraph, John T. Studebaker, United States Commissioner of Education, asserts his belief in radio as an educational force in the United States today. Others …

The Assimilation Of The Japanese In And Around Stockton, Horace F. Chansler

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem of' the Japanese in California has been prominent since the opening of the twentieth century. Much has been written in an attempt to help solve the problem. Yet the general trends of the writings prior to the Johnson Immigration Law of 1924 were to deal with the Japanese just coming into California rather than with those who were born here or had established permanent residence. Yet after the Immigration Law went into effect the problem of preventing undesirable Japanese from entering California became extinct. The problem no longer centers around exclusion but rather around "inclusion". In short the …
