Seventy-nine pupils, selected from three classrooms in three rural school districts, were classified as middle-class Anglo-American, lower-class Anglo-American, and lower-class Mexican-American. Two of the three classes were designated as experimental and one as the control class.

The instructional design, twelve study trips (one each week) and ensuing discussions, encourage pupils to use new words and develop and expand the meanings of words.

The major source of data was the Watts …

The Functional Morphology And Ecology Of Chone Mollis, Dale Brian Bonar Jan 1970

The Functional Morphology And Ecology Of Chone Mollis, Dale Brian Bonar

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Chone mollis occurs in large numbers in Tomales Bay and is an ecologically important infaunal member of the bay community. As with most marine communities, very little work has been done with individual species of the community. The present study of C. mollis is a contribution towards an understanding of the community as an ecological unit.

This study investigates the structure and function of the tube; tube-building habits; burrowing and locomotion; external anatomy; feeding; and internal anatomy of the muscular, skeletal, vascular, excretory, reproductive, and alimentary systems of C. mollis.

Interactions Of Sodium Ethacrynate In Intravenous Admixture With Selected Cardiovascular And Psychotherapeutic Agents, Patrick N. Catania Jan 1970

Interactions Of Sodium Ethacrynate In Intravenous Admixture With Selected Cardiovascular And Psychotherapeutic Agents, Patrick N. Catania

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The possibility of drug incompatibilities is a matter of serious concern when administering two or more therapeutic agents. This is especially true in the case of parenteral administration when one must be aware not only of therapeutic interactions but also chemical and physical reactions that might occur.

In order to avoid incompatibilities, drug manufacturers have suggested that parenteral solutions be used immediately after reconstitution and that admixtures of parenteral products not be administered wherever possible (1,2). Physicians have also stressed the importance in avoiding multiple drug therapy (3,4). In spite of these suggestions, the practice of multiple drug therapy is …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The function of light in the reproductive cycle in amphibians has not been extensively studied. However, Farner (1965) feels that the small amount of experimental evidence suggests that photoperiod may play a role in the testicular cycle of Rana esculenta. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of light on the gonads and the gonadotropic hormone forming cells of the adenohypophysis in the newt Taricha granulosa granulosa.

A Comparison Of Leisure Theorists, Nancy Tobin Hornberger Jan 1970

A Comparison Of Leisure Theorists, Nancy Tobin Hornberger

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Social scientists express growing concern about man's capacity to achieve a state of existence greater than that of mere survival. "Popularizers" and writers of "social criticism" echo this concern. Obviously, because of scientific and technological changes, man's participation is needed less and less in the production of economic abundance. He is, therefore, to be free to engage in other pursuits. Awareness of this impending freedom challenges those intellectuals who wish to describe and to anticipate the direction and quality of man's total existence.

A Study Of Early Reasoning Skills In The Trainable Mentally Retarded : As Related To Piaget's Seriation Theory, Robert William Ginther

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In terms of Piaget's theory of cognitive development and the relationship he attributes between reasoning and the development of classification and seriation skills, the following questions arise: can early reasoning ability be enhanced through training? If IQ tests are accepted as measures of intellectual function, do they then contain a significant number of seriation type questions? If so, will the seriation test be an accepted measure of intellectual function?

An Analysis Of The Elements Of Style In The University Sermons Of John Henry Newman, George Robert Cripe Jan 1970

An Analysis Of The Elements Of Style In The University Sermons Of John Henry Newman, George Robert Cripe

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Syntax, word usage, and paragraph development form the substance of the analysis of the Apologia. The use of subordination, repetition, and antithesis in sentence construction; the choice of words to produce rhythm and prove mood, as well as the implied metaphor; and careful blending of these elements into an organic unity which reflect not only the personality of the man, but his very thought process; these are the common elements identified by critics of the Apologia. To what extent these elements exist in the prose of the university sermons, and what other elements of style are identifiable in these sermons …

A Survey Of Creative Dramatics, Julie Devecchio Baker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The little princess was merrily playing in the garden with her ball; tossing it up into the air and bounding it down on the ground. As she played she danced around, humming and singing little snatches of tunes to herself. She was completely unaware of the evil-looking creature creeping up behind her. Suddenly, the evil witch stretched out her arms and, with fingers pointing at the little princess she loosed an evil-sounding yell. The little princess looked up first in amazement and then in horror. Then, she yawned sleepily and fell back on the ground fast asleep. The witch then …

Fabianism Versus Welfareism : The Movement Towards The Welfare State In The United States, Susan Lee St. Clair Jan 1970

Fabianism Versus Welfareism : The Movement Towards The Welfare State In The United States, Susan Lee St. Clair

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Finally in the 1880’s there emerged a reformist group which was ultimately to be the model of the viability, adaptability, effectiveness, and success of evolutionary socialism. The group called itself the Fabian Society and in the beginning it seemed to be not unlike other protest or reformist groups which were springing up all over England at the time. The difference was that this group, though always small in numbers, was to have a tremendous impact throughout England and the rest of the democratic world. To be specific, the ideas of the Fabian Socialists can clearly be seen as influencing the …

Observations On The Effects Of Aspirin On Cells In Vitro, Roger Scott Barron Jan 1970

Observations On The Effects Of Aspirin On Cells In Vitro, Roger Scott Barron

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Numerous reports concerned with the effects of chemical agents (drugs) on animals, especially humans, have appeared in the literature over a period of centuries. Until very recently, however, the observations on which these reports were based have been rather general. The salicylates, for example, have been used and studied for many years yet investigations into their specific effects within living cells are minimal.

Of the several members of the salicylate group, the two that have gained widespread use in clinical practice are sodium salicylate and acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin, the name of which was derived from the contraction …

The purpose of this study is to examine the role and locations of “magnetic centers” which evolve, or are established , form the flow of information and the lines of authority on a university campus.

It is believed that the certain individuals are centers of information, “magnetic centers,” and they draw messages from other individuals at all levels in the communications network of the structure of structures of an institution. By doing this they exert influence through a filtering process of the flow of information they receive and disseminate. These magnetic connectors may or may not be recognized by other …

Differential Spectrophotometric Analysis Of Intravenous Admixtures Containing Metaraminol With Selected Corticosteroids, Frederick Erin Turner Jan 1970

Differential Spectrophotometric Analysis Of Intravenous Admixtures Containing Metaraminol With Selected Corticosteroids, Frederick Erin Turner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Intravenous admixtures consisting of one or more drug formulations, diluted in a large volume of intravenous solution, are used extensively in current medical practice. Development of reliable methods to predict the compatibility of the admixture components is essential as a guide for their selection.

Because the majority of the reports published, to date, have used a visible change as the criterion for judging compatibility, it was the purpose of this study to demonstrate the use of spectrophotometric analysis to detect the occurrence of chemical interactions between two components of an intravenous admixture.

Effects Of Temperature And Salinity On The Rate Of Oxygen Consumption Of Neomysis Intermedia (Czerniavsky), Margaret Ann Lutz Jan 1970

Effects Of Temperature And Salinity On The Rate Of Oxygen Consumption Of Neomysis Intermedia (Czerniavsky), Margaret Ann Lutz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The rate of oxygen consumption of an organisms is influenced by rush factors as temperature, activity, body rise, Salinity, and time of day (Prosser and Brown, 1961). Temperature andsalinity are considered to be the most important environmental l factor in the liver of aquatic invertebrates (Kaune, 1564). In general, aquatic invertebrates are thermo Comforters, and their ratio of metabolics and activity are decisively affected by water temperature. The capacity to regulate ray increase or decrease as a function of temperature, and it is usually greatest at a near-optimum temperature (Kinne, 1963).

The Design And Construction Of A Constant Acceleration Drive System For Mössbauer Experiments, James Donald Russell Jan 1970

The Design And Construction Of A Constant Acceleration Drive System For Mössbauer Experiments, James Donald Russell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

An excited nucleus may undergo a transition to its ground state by the emission of a gamma ray. The nucleus, if free to do so, will recoil and take some of the transition energy as recoil energy leaving less energy for the emitted gamma ray. This gamma ray does not have enough energy to excite a similar nucleus and will, therefore, not by resonantly absorbed due to the fact that the natural linewidth of the gamma ray is so much smaller than the energy taken by the emitting atom and the similar energy needed by the absorbing atom.

In 1958 …
