The Role Of The Student Activities Administrator In The California Public High School, Joseph Roberts Jan 1968

The Role Of The Student Activities Administrator In The California Public High School, Joseph Roberts

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It was the purpose of this study to analyze the status and role of student activities to propose the scope and duties of the position, and to establish criteria for qualifications, selection, and appointment of these co-administrators in California public high schools. Initially, a survey was made of all California public high schools to determine if there was a sufficient number of these co-administrators assigned on at least a half-time basis to warrant a more detailed study. The results not only indicated a more detailed study was warranted, but that this was the administrative pattern in the majority of schools …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is one purpose of this dissertation to introduce a facile method for the preparation of β glycosides of D-glucose and D-allose.

It is the second purpose of this dissertation to investigate the preparation of 2-oxazolidinones forming a bridge between C2 and C3 of allopyranose. This preparation, along with the facile preparation of β-benzyl glycosides of D-glucosamine and D-allosamine, should lead to compounds which, in a few steps, can conceivably be used for coupling at positions 1 and 4.

An Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Making Radiometric Titrations Of Precipitation Reactions, Harold Elmore Hammerstrom Jan 1968

An Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Making Radiometric Titrations Of Precipitation Reactions, Harold Elmore Hammerstrom

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present work was to (1) determine the feasibility of performing radiometric titrations using low activity radioisotopes and inexpensive equipment; (2) develop a workable procedure for performing ·radiometric titrations in the classroom; and (3) assemble the basic radioactive concepts needed so the content could be used in a chemistry course of study.

The limited work done previously with radiometric titrations has used solutions of high specific activity and relatively large volumes of solution. The use of high activity radioisotopes creates problems of radioisotope procurement, shielding, handling and disposal. The use of high activity radioisotopes required special training …

The Christian Allegory In Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice, Patricia Ann Jara Jan 1968

The Christian Allegory In Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice, Patricia Ann Jara

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice, is one of the most misunderstood plays in the playwright's canon. Although the play's popularity is evidence by its history of successful production, critics have looked with puzzlement at the drama because Shakespeare combined three tales having no apparent relationship into one play. The story of the man who is willing to give up his life for his friend, the tales of the caskets, and the love story of the Christian for the Jewess do have a common general theme of love. But there is another underlying theme which is significant to the meaning …

Oxygen Uptake And Thyroid Activity During Amphibian Metamorphosis, Susan Ann Foster Jan 1968

Oxygen Uptake And Thyroid Activity During Amphibian Metamorphosis, Susan Ann Foster

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Oxygen consumption can most readily be related to wet weight. However, the weight of a tadpole increases so long as it is feeding, then decreases during final non-feeding stages. Oxygen uptake may also be related to dry weight, but dry weight increases significantly from early tadpole stages to adult (Funkhouser and Mills, in press). There is change in one factor at the same time the change in the the other factor is in the opposite direction. Total nitrogen content may be used as an index of the metabolizing tissue, but is subject to the same criticism as dry weight (Moore, …

Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill Jan 1968

Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The web of Mexican-American life is complex in its origins, its manifestations, and its degree of identification with or alienation from the dominant culture. A thesis of the length of this one can deal with all this complexity only in a superficial way. However, by a rather narrowly defined examination of a few children certain insights may be gained which could be used as a basis for generalization about other children of similar background, and perhaps even for some tentative generalizations about the problems of the Mexican-American community as a whole.

With this purpose in mind -- to inquire intensively …

A Study Of Viktor E. Frankl's And Karl A. Menninger's Concepts Of Love, Gordon Merrell Hatcher Jan 1968

A Study Of Viktor E. Frankl's And Karl A. Menninger's Concepts Of Love, Gordon Merrell Hatcher

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The subject of love was chosen because of the current confusion over the nature, importance, and development of love. Although these topics are often discussed, the study of them seems never to be exhausted.

The scope of the subject was too broad and the time for the study too short to investigate a number of theories of love. Therefore, the writer chose to study the concepts of love of the present-day psychiatrist. This decision led to the search for two contemporary psychiatrists who had published materials of importance on the topic. The subject was narrowed further when the search was …

Palladium And Platinum Complexes Of Substituted 4-Vinylcyclohexene, Donald Y. Chinn Jan 1968

Palladium And Platinum Complexes Of Substituted 4-Vinylcyclohexene, Donald Y. Chinn

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In recent years numerous complexes have been reported in which olefins were chelated to transition metals.Ever since the generally regarded first olefin complex, Zeise's salt (32) KPt(C2H43, the interest in this field of organometallic chemistry has expanded to several families of olefinic ligands and metals like palladium(II), platinum(II) copper(I), silver(I), and more recently vanadium and titanium

The nature of the bonding of olefins to metal atoms seemed to involved the interaction between pi electrons in the unsaturated molecule and the hybrid orbitals of the metal rather than a localized sigma bonds between the metal atom and …

The Effects Of Both State And Trait Anxiety And Certain Personality Variables On Performance In A Complex Motor Task, Bruce Victor Parsons Jr. Jan 1968

The Effects Of Both State And Trait Anxiety And Certain Personality Variables On Performance In A Complex Motor Task, Bruce Victor Parsons Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The relationship of anxiety in both its state and trait manifestation to simple motor performance has been established in a number of studies. The present study is an attempt to extend these relationships to more complex motor performances, that is, to the level of a unitary group of motor habits such as is present in an athletic task. In doing this the present study utilizes not only direct assessments of both state and trait anxiety, but also assessment of certain personality traits which may be important in mediating the expression of anxiety and activation level.

Jorge Eliecer Gaitan And His Term As Mayor Of Bogota, Colombia, June 1936 To February 1937, Ruth Ann Updegraff

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One of the most controversial figures in Colombian history is that of Jorge Eliecer Gaitan, whose assassination of April 9, 1948, ended a twenty-year career in national politics.1 The Colombian writer-diplomat, Juan Lozano Y Lozano, has distinguished Gaitan as the man most responsible for creating a "new mood: in twentieth century Colombian politics.2 Essentially, this "new mood" is that of increased interest in national social problems which, during the lifetime of Gaitan, was accompanied by an increasing demand on the part of the masses for significant participation in the political processes of the nation.

The paper is divided …

The Effect Of Tranquilizing Agents On Diadochokinetic Movement In A Senile Psychotic Population, Sam Larry Terzo Jan 1968

The Effect Of Tranquilizing Agents On Diadochokinetic Movement In A Senile Psychotic Population, Sam Larry Terzo

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Statement of the problem. The present study was designed to answer the question: What is the effect of tranquilizers, specifically phenothiazines , on diadochokinetic movement in a geriatric population? It was hypothesized that patients exhibiting overt effects of long term phenothiazine therapy (dyskinesia ) would show a reduced rate of diadochokinetic movement when compared with an age-matched group exhibiting no such symptoms and with no history of having taken tranquilizers . Furthermore, if this diadochokinetic movement were reduced, there would be a greater incidence of defective speech in this patient group .

Affective Responses To Environmental Influences In Immature Rats, William Rudolf Brunner Jan 1968

Affective Responses To Environmental Influences In Immature Rats, William Rudolf Brunner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present investigation is to add to the growing body of knowledge about the behavioral development of rats. It is an enlargement of a study by Roberts (1966) who investigated the effects of quantitative reward shifts on the behavior of immature rats. Roberts' experiment was in turn founded on earlier experiments by Crespi (1942). These experiments tested the effect of different quantitative reward levels on the behavior of adult rats. These studies of Crespi are fundamental to the understanding of the present investigation and so are discussed below in some detail.

Crespi trained adult rats, one trail …

The Adrenal Gland In Extracorporeal Circulation, Ladislav Kuzela Jan 1968

The Adrenal Gland In Extracorporeal Circulation, Ladislav Kuzela

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Due to the large volume and often conflicting results reported on postoperative endocrinological changes, the practicing surgeon has difficulty in finding applicable principles. A knowledge of these principles is however necessary for an understanding of the mechanisms responsible for survival of the organism after surgery. The results thus far thus far reported are based upon complicated methodology, and may appear to be more theoretical than of practical value. Studies based upon small laboratory animals are indeed statistically significant, but the interpretation of these results as applied to the patient is difficult. Controlled human studies have been few in number and …

The Theme Of Social Decay In The Last Five Novels Of James Fenimore Cooper, Cecil John Miller Jan 1968

The Theme Of Social Decay In The Last Five Novels Of James Fenimore Cooper, Cecil John Miller

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The following discussion is intended to deal with the theme of social decay as it comes to expression in the last five novels of James Fenimore Cooper.1 The method adopted for realizing this intention is to examine closely the characteristic features of the late novels in order, first, to ascertain the precise nature of the theme of social decay as an intellectual statement and, secondly, to appraise the artistic means chosen for embodying this theme in the individual books. Hence the primary emphasis of the investigation lies with the thematic study of the source, that is with the novels …

Electrocapillary Studies Of Reversible Charge Transfer V(Iii)/V(Ii) Electrode, Mohammad Ali Akhtar Jan 1968

Electrocapillary Studies Of Reversible Charge Transfer V(Iii)/V(Ii) Electrode, Mohammad Ali Akhtar

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Electrocapillary equation for an ideal polarized electrode based on Gibb's adsorption equation is appropriately recast into experimentally measurable quantities in order to apply it to a reversible charge transfer electrode.

To calculate the various parameters of the equation developed, experimental details were worked out. For the measurement of Current-time relationship of a single drop, a fast response potentiostat was built by using transistorized chopped stabilized operational amplifiers and precision components in the circuitry with proper compensation for IR-drop in the cell and the electrical double layer capacity. The analysis of I-t curves was done by taking into account the composite …

Determination Of Flow Curves From Capillary Rise Rate Measurements, Richard Lehr Kissling Jan 1968

Determination Of Flow Curves From Capillary Rise Rate Measurements, Richard Lehr Kissling

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The measurement of viscosity is a common and useful technique for investigating the mechanical behavior of many real fluids. Theoretical interpretations of viscosity measurements have been important in attempts to elucidate fundamental properties of the liquid state. Brush (6) and Bondi (3) give reviews of the current status of attempts to construct theories of liquid viscosity, and it is quite apparent from these reviews that the molecular theory of rheological phenomena is in its infancy.

In addition to the fundamental aspects of viscometry, there are many practical applications to which viscosity measurements are directed (25). One has only to scan …

Cyclic Derivatives Of 2-Amino-2-Deoxy-D-Hexopyranoses, Kenji Miyai

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to prepare heterocyclic derivatives, bridging C-2 and C-3 of 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-hexopyranoses, useful as blocking groups in the preparation of aminosugar oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. The work reported herein is concerned with oxazolidones of 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-hexopyranoses (Figure 1).)

There are no examples known, in which five or six-membered rings are fused in a trans-arrangement to five-membered furanose ring. However, although synthetic difficulties were observed, sic and five-membered rings were fused in a trans-arrangement to a sic-membered pyranose ring as pointed out before. In the case of our trans-diequatorially fused oxazolidones additional preparative difficulties were expected, because of the …

The Short Stories Of John Steinbeck, Howard Lawrence Lachtman Jan 1968

The Short Stories Of John Steinbeck, Howard Lawrence Lachtman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis, if with respect only to the short fiction, will be to provide some measure of resurrection for a much-ignored and much-maligned talent. Scholarly interest in John Steinbeck has been distinctly minimal and even his admirers admit his artistic decline of recent years. Unlike the attention lavished upon his illustrious contemporaries, William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway, the number of major critical surveys of Steinbeck's works can be counted upon the fingers of one's hand. It has been customary to regard Hemingway and Faulkner, usually in company with F. Scott Fitzgerald, as titans, while John Steinbeck's, cast …
