The Effect Of Temperature On The Growth Rates Of Several California Frogs, Donald Avila Villeneuve Jan 1960

The Effect Of Temperature On The Growth Rates Of Several California Frogs, Donald Avila Villeneuve

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

To date the majority of the work on the ecological significance of embryonic temperature relationships has been with Eastern Frongs. The writer is aware of only two papers describing work of this nature with California frogs: Schechtmann and Oleson (1941) working with temperature tolerance in embryos of Hyla regilla, and the work of Zweifel (1955) on the Rana boylei species group.

For this reason it seemed desireable to study the effect of temperature on the growth rates of some frogs native to California and, since work of this nature has been done with the eastern Rana catesbeiana by Moore (1942b), …

3-Amino-2,5-Dihydroxy-5-Sulfo-Benzoic Acid, Hideo Tomomatsu

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It seems possible that efforts to discover essential chemical differences which might exist between normal and malignant cells will eventually reveal the secret of cancer and thereby lead to new approaches to safer and more selective chemotherapy.

One objective of this study is to find that part of this molecule that causes it to concentrate in the tumor and thence make a smaller size compound which has similar concentration characteristics to tumor as tetracycline. For this purpose, an attempt was made in this study to synthesize the right side ring of Chlorotetracycline, the structure of which is shown below. [see …

An Experimental Study For The Selection Of A Test Battery For Use In The Screening Interview, Richard Manning Hawes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study is based on the assumption that there is a need for identifying, selecting, counseling, and developing teacher competencies and the recognition of the need for further studies in defining the good teacher. Such studies should contribute to more efficients methods of selecting and preparing teachers. The problem of selecting persons who are apt to make good teachers, and who have a reasonable high potential is of primary importance. By statistically selecting a brief battery of tests from a larger battery, thi study hopes to present the counselors at the College of the Pacific with a practical and usable …

Observations Of The Growth Of Two Strains Of Trichomonas Augusta From Amphibians, William Carl Von Meyer Jan 1960

Observations Of The Growth Of Two Strains Of Trichomonas Augusta From Amphibians, William Carl Von Meyer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study was begun with three purposes in mind. One was to develop a better medium for the cultivation of flagellate protozoans of the genus Trichomonas by varying the viscosity and nutrient content of the constituents. The second was to determine, by rates of division, the effects of various antibiotics upon axenic cultures, and the third, was to compare division rates in various media which did not contain antibiotics. Since the few axenic cultures which were obtained lasted a maximum of four hours, the emphasis of the problem was shifted to the behavior of Trichomonas augusta growing in association with …

A Study Of The Supervisory Activities Of The Teacher-Principal In Selected Elementary Schools In San Joaquin, Stanislaus And Sacramento Counties, John K. Morris Jan 1960

A Study Of The Supervisory Activities Of The Teacher-Principal In Selected Elementary Schools In San Joaquin, Stanislaus And Sacramento Counties, John K. Morris

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Supervision is interpreted in various ways by teacher principals as a result of the differences in their background training, and experience. Some realize that good supervisory activities involve the stimulation of professional growth; others give a sigh of relief at the end of their teaching day and have little time for supervisory activities; and still, other teacher-principals look upon the goal of supervision as a perpetuation of their personal teaching blueprints. This diversity of interpretation is in itself evidence of need for a better understanding of the true supervisory obligations of the teacher-principal. It is the function of good supervision …

Personality Differences Between Talented High School Achievers And Underachievers, Martin Leroy Mini

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Today, more than ever before, there is present an increasing emphasis on the part of educators to help the academically talented student develop his scholastic ability to its maximum level. Past experience has shown that there is a large number of talented students who are not achieving scholastically in terms of their apparent intellectual potentials. Research on the differences between achieving and underachieving talented students, has left unanswered many important questions concerned with this area of educational psychology.

The "World of Art" course was originally intended to be a one semester course open to junior and senior students in secondary school. Although the course was intended to be a one …

Arranging For Junior High School Wind Ensembles, Rodney Robert Hines Jan 1960

Arranging For Junior High School Wind Ensembles, Rodney Robert Hines

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Music has, at least to a certain degree, established itself among the subject matter of modern-day school curricula. Its position is probably most precarious in our Junior High School system. Although the Junior High is by no means a recent innovation, it is a controversial one. and is still somewhat in an experimental stage in many respects. Music instruction, particularly, is greatly affected by this profound influence upon the instructional work of the seventh, eighth and ninth grades that the Junior High division has given. John W. Beattie has put it the way:

The Orleans Geometry Prognosis Test was given at the beginning of the geometry course so that students, teachers, …

A Comprehensive Study To Determine The Teachers' Role In Politics, Hollie Wilford Crawford Jan 1960

A Comprehensive Study To Determine The Teachers' Role In Politics, Hollie Wilford Crawford

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the role, if any, that a teacher should play in the political life of the community. There existed, and still exists, a great variance of opinion even on the part of teachers as to their political role. Some would have teachers set themselves completely apart from anything that even remotely resembles politics. Others would have teachers become deeply involved in the political life of the community. Heretofore no basis for participation in politics has been given other than personal opinion.

Should teachers participate in partisan politics? This single question states …

A Study Of The Congressional Hearings On The Dismissal Of General Macarthur, Byford Scott Jan 1960

A Study Of The Congressional Hearings On The Dismissal Of General Macarthur, Byford Scott

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The eye witnesses against MacArthur were members of the Truman Administration. Acheson and Marshall were the principal critics of MacArthur’s stand. Secretary Acheson testified that MacArthur had done a fine job in Japan and our allies agreed without policy there. Acheson replied to the alleged lack of policy by making a distinction between our policy and our war aims. Our policy in Korea looked to a unified, independent democratic government, but our war aim was to stop the attack on South Korea. Regarding the proposal that the United States take unilateral action if our allies did not support us, he …

An Historical Study Of Hesperian College, Woodland, California, From 1861 To 1896, Haworth Alfred Clover

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Today, one hundred years after the founding of this school, records, programs, catalogues, and other data concerning the school have become scattered throughout California. Data located in historical depositories are sparse and incomplete. Much information lies in the hands of private persons not known or available to the general public.

From generation to generation it becomes increasingly difficult to locate data concerning earlier generations and often the data have been unknowingly destroyed. The main purpose for this project then, is to preserve knowledge of this early California school in a single source for the reference of future historians.

Historical Study And Adaptation Of Hawaiian Folk Dances For Physical Education Classes, Sharon Rosa Hines Jan 1960

Historical Study And Adaptation Of Hawaiian Folk Dances For Physical Education Classes, Sharon Rosa Hines

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present material that would be acceptable in the high school physical education class required a study of the various types of dances from Hawaii. There appeared to be two main classifications of dance forms: the modern and ancient. In the modern form, hip, torso, simple and intricate step patterns, as well as hand and arm motions, are used to convey the meaning and rhythm of the music . This style is not readily adaptable to the high school situation, nor does it lend itself to transmission by written form. The ancient danses, on the other hand, relied upon the …

Tetracycline-7-Boronic Acid, William Denham Rhoads Jan 1960

Tetracycline-7-Boronic Acid, William Denham Rhoads

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study is the preparation of a tetracycline-boron-10 derivative which is stable under biological conditions. The boron-10 should then provide a concentration of material capable of accepting thermal neutrons, thus producing localized high-energy alpha radiation. The fact that the tetracyclines are not retained by normal tissue should remove the danger of destruction of this tissue.

The Arab Boycott Of Israel, Hussein Abu-Bakr El Kadi Jan 1960

The Arab Boycott Of Israel, Hussein Abu-Bakr El Kadi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

An intelligent understanding of international relationships requires a special study of the critical places where continuous crisis arises. It was felt, therefore, desirable to examine a significant aspect of the conflict between the Arab World and the State of Israel that provides the subject of this study.

The economic boycott of Israel has assumed a grave significance in international relations, yet to the author's knowledge this subject has not been investigated in a scholarly and comprehensive manner in any available publication. The writer embarks on this topic in the hope that it may provide the American student of Middle Eastern …
