Miró To Music: Transformation And Cross Disciplinary Processes, Yuh-Wen Huang Jan 2002

Miró To Music: Transformation And Cross Disciplinary Processes, Yuh-Wen Huang

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Usually people's inner emotions can be touched by the visual and acoustic arts. These two artistic genres appear to have significant differences. My own aesthetic perceives that the two arts share common concepts, a perception I have arrived at through my Eastern background and Western educational discipline. This thesis expounds my creative philosophy through transforming Joan Miró's works of visual art into six of my musical compositions. Miró's artistic ideas, procedures, designs, and philosophies allow me to evolve and extend my musical compositions and express my innermost sensibility to echo his "sound". The thesis is in four parts: Introduction, Identification, …

Perceptions Of Student Teachers And Practising Primary Teachers In Relation To Primary Mathematics, Thambiaiah Kalamany

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study explores beliefs held by student teachers and practising primary teachers about the nature of mathematics, the teaching and learning of mathematics, and their own classroom practices. The study aims to provide evidence of the relationships between these beliefs, the teaching of mathematics, and the influences and constraints on classroom practice. The study is both quantitative and qualitative in design, using semi-structured interview as a main tool while supported and guided by an initial questionnaire survey. A cohort of 361 student teachers and 34 practising teachers responded to the questionnaire survey. The interview data were based on the beliefs …

The Telling Of Tales: An Installation And Readings Concerning Waiting, Penelope Harris Jan 2002

The Telling Of Tales: An Installation And Readings Concerning Waiting, Penelope Harris

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The thesis 'The telling of stories: readings and an installation concerning waiting' explores my sculptural exhibition 'Waiting' which was shown in the Faculty of Creative Arts Gallery at Wollongong University in April 2001. Underpinning this research is the understanding of autobiography and subjectivity, and the literary evocation of melancholy and loss in the work of Gunter Grass, harking back to Durer's 'Melancholia'of 1514.

The exhibition explored two series of photographs taken by my grandfather in Canada in the early twentieth century. The first series of photographs recorded the space of operating theatre where his mother had died, and the second …

Different fabrication processes involving chemical deposition, electrochemical deposition, inkjet and contact printing were …

Human Lens Uv Filters, Lisa M. Taylor Jan 2002

Human Lens Uv Filters, Lisa M. Taylor

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Age-dependent human lens colouration and fluorescence may be explained by the covalent binding of U V filter compounds to lens crystallins. These crystallin modifications result from the inherent instability of the kynurenine (Kyn) UV filters at physiological pH. Thus, the process of UV filter decomposition and the interaction of the intermediates (α,β-ketoalkenes) with lens components clearly warrants further investigation.

Quantification of the U V filter compounds 3-hydroxykynurenine (30HKyn), Kyn and 3-hydroxykynurenine glucoside (30HKG) present in human lenses displayed a linear decrease with age, with slightly lower levels in the nucleus than the cortex. 4-(2- amino-3-hydroxyphenyl)-4-oxobutanoic acid glucoside (AHBG) was found …

Novel Membrane Composite Structures Based On Conducting Electroactive Polymers, Violeta Misoska Jan 2002

Novel Membrane Composite Structures Based On Conducting Electroactive Polymers, Violeta Misoska

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Conducting electroactive polymer (CEP) membranes have potential applications in many fields including metal ion separation and recovery. To date much of the work in this area has utilised traditional polymer films and membranes. While these materials are permeable towards metal ions, they have not exhibited great metal ion selectivity. Consequently this work has focused on the development of CEP materials with a high degree of permeability and metal ion selectivity. These included : 1. Conducting polymer membranes containing chelating agents as dopants. 2. Highly ordered, high surface area conducting polymer membranes (inverse opals and fibrillar membranes). 3. Conducting polymer/fabric composites. …

The Development Of Novel Carbazole-Based Peptoid Antibacterials To Challenge The Deadly Superbugs, Helen M. Witchard Jan 2002

The Development Of Novel Carbazole-Based Peptoid Antibacterials To Challenge The Deadly Superbugs, Helen M. Witchard

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Research on the development of novel, carbazole-based peptoids as potential new antibacterial agents is presented in this thesis. The series of macrocyclic peptoid compounds were designed to act as vancomycin mimics, and possessed many of the structural features believed to be necessary for antibacterial activity. Being less conformationally restricted than vancomycin, these compounds have the potential to be active against both vancomycin-resistant and vancomycin-susceptible strains of enterococci, and other Gram-positive species.

Chapter 2 describes the synthesis of a number of structurally variant cyclized and uncyclized peptoid derivatives, which were produced from a multi-step (15) synthetic route, in overall yields of …

An Intelligent Heuristic Search Method For Flow-Shop Problems, Joshua P. Fan Jan 2002

An Intelligent Heuristic Search Method For Flow-Shop Problems, Joshua P. Fan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The flow-shop problem has been a problem for production management ever since the manufacturing industry began. This problem involves the scheduling of production processes for manufacturing orders (referred to as jobs), where each job requires the same processing sequence and thus the same processing facilities (referred to as machines), although the processing time for a job on a machine may be different from that of a different job. The objective is to find a schedule that can complete all jobs in the shortest possible time under the constraints of machine availability. The fact that more than one job may be …

Fatigue Strength Of Adhesively Bonded Aluminium In A Marine Environment, Shane Smiltnieks Jan 2002

Fatigue Strength Of Adhesively Bonded Aluminium In A Marine Environment, Shane Smiltnieks

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Adhesives are being used for the joining of both semi-structural and structural components at an ever increasing rate. This increase in use is related directly to the acknowledgment of the many advantages adhesives have over more conventional methods of bonding. There are though, a number of industries that are sceptical of the long term performance of adhesives and hence their use has been kept to a minimum. One of these industries is the aluminium shipbuilding industry where long term durability is very important. jAluminium vessels are exposed to continual cyclic stresses and the harsh environment of both the sun and …

Consumer Loyalty Re-Assessed: Measurement, Determinants And Intervention, Megan Divett Jan 2002

Consumer Loyalty Re-Assessed: Measurement, Determinants And Intervention, Megan Divett

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Consumer loyalty is a central research construct that is perceived to be a key to organisational profit and success. However, traditional attempts to increase consumer loyalty through loyalty programs, such as reward schemes, have failed to actually enhance loyalty. In response to the poor performance of these programs, this thesis examines three major research questions: the effective measurement of consumer loyalty, the determinants of consumer loyalty, and an effective intervention to influence consumer loyalty. These three research questions were explored within a consumer service setting of patrons to a regional theatre located in Canberra, Australia. This thesis employed a mailed …

Measures Of The Acoustic Startle Reflex: Comparative Sensitivity To Stimulus And Prestimulus Manipulation, Jake C. Henn Jan 2002

Measures Of The Acoustic Startle Reflex: Comparative Sensitivity To Stimulus And Prestimulus Manipulation, Jake C. Henn

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examined physiological reactions characteristic of the Acoustic Startle Response (ASR) under several different experimental conditions. Two measures of the startle eyeblink were extensively compared: (1) Electromyogram (EMG) measures of orbicularis oculi muscle activity, and (2) Electrooculogram (EOG) measures of vertical eye movement. In a first set of experiments, Heart Rate (HR) and Skin Conductance (SC) response measures, as well as the startle blink, were recorded in response to simple startle stimuli. When a single stimulus intensity was used, reliable startle response elicitation and habituation were noted in all measures except HR. These results changed slightly when stimulus intensity …

Humour In Indian Writing In English: Three Novels Women Writers : Namita Gokhale's Paro Dreams Of Passion, Suniti Namjoshi's The Conversations Of Cow, Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things, M Chatterjee-Padmanabhan Jan 2002

Humour In Indian Writing In English: Three Novels Women Writers : Namita Gokhale's Paro Dreams Of Passion, Suniti Namjoshi's The Conversations Of Cow, Arundhati Roy's The God Of Small Things, M Chatterjee-Padmanabhan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The key words in the title of the thesis are problematic and need to be defined at the outset. Humour, which is ordinarily conflated with comedy, satire, irony and its various other forms, presents problems of terminology. The adjectives 'Indian' and 'women' used to qualify the writers, also present some difficulties. Before launching into a discussion of humour and the artistic modes and genres one associates with it, it is important to address the question of the credentials of 'Indianness' of the three writers. Gokhale (b. 1956) author of Paro Dreams of Passion, started out as a journalist who still …

Design And Implementation Of A Content Filtering Firewall, Rongbo Du Jan 2002

Design And Implementation Of A Content Filtering Firewall, Rongbo Du

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Firewall is a component or a set of components that restricts access between a protected network and the Internet, or between two networks. A traditional firewall tries to protect the internal network from outside threats by permitting or forbidding network connections between the external network and the intemal network. The rules used by the firewall to determine whether a connection should be permitted or not are usually based on the connection type, source address or destination address of the connection, or user authentication, and not on the actual content of the network traffic. Content filtering is to monitor and analyse …

Design And Analysis Of Flow Control Algorithms For Available Bit Rate Service, Tony Yijian Liu Jan 2002

Design And Analysis Of Flow Control Algorithms For Available Bit Rate Service, Tony Yijian Liu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

One of the challenges in ATM traffic management design is to maintain the quality of service for various classes while attempting to make maximum use of network resources. Available bit rate (ABR) mechanisms allow the network to divide the available bandwidth fairly and efficiently amongst the active sources. One of the difficulties in providing optimal control for ABR traffic is that the available bandwidth fluctuates dynamically due to statistical variations in high priory traffic and changes in the number of active ABR connections sharing the available bandwidth. It is apparent from the literature that reactive feedback control may not operate …

Early Sintering Phenomena Pertaining To Hot Briquetted Iron, Wanda M. Melfo Jan 2002

Early Sintering Phenomena Pertaining To Hot Briquetted Iron, Wanda M. Melfo

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A significant part of tlie reserves of iron ore in Australia is fine particles of hematite. A fluidised iron ore reduction plant using FINMET® technology was installed to add value to these natural resources. The final product is a compact of highly metallised iron fines called 'hot briquetted iron' or HBI. Although the process constitutes an ideal way of reducing fine particulates of iron ore, there are some fundamental issues regarding the agglomeration of the iron particulates during the reduction as well as the consolidation of the briquettes that remain unresolved. Specifically, the mechanism of consolidation of the particles into …

Genetic Algorithm Based Discrete Optimum Design Of Geometrically Non-Linear Plane And Space Trusses, Khalil Sabaghalvani

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The field of optimal design of engineering structures has been revolutionised by the rapid development of computer technology in the past few decades, which has enabled the design and analysis to be achieved with much greater speed and accuracy than ever before. A number of design methodologies have been developed and are in use for the optimum design of structural systems. In the last decade, the use of evolutionary algorithms, especially genetic algorithms (GAs) to optimise the design of structures has received much research attention mainly because of their simplicity, global perspective, and inherent parallel processing. Furthermore, in GA the …

Evidence based practice is a form of this process. Nationally and internationally the move towards evidence based health care is represented by the development of evidence based practice guidelines. The aim of this thesis was to make recommendations for the development of Australian dietetic practice guidelines for diabetes (DPGD). The objectives of this thesis were to audit the development processes of three sets of existing DPGD, to compare and contrast the content of these guidelines and describe …

Does Fat Influence Physical Activity In The Female Wistar Rat?, Paula Kathleen Stevens Jan 2002

Does Fat Influence Physical Activity In The Female Wistar Rat?, Paula Kathleen Stevens

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Recent population studies indicate that energy intake is decreasing while the prevalence of obesity continues to rise (Bray and Popkin, 1998). This may be due to the consumption of a high fat diet by western cultures, an increasing sedentary hfestyle or an interplay between both factors. Previous work by Pierce (1998), describing a chance observation that rats that had eaten a high fat diet exercised less than controls, suggests that eating fat per se may diminish physical activity. Aims The aim of the present study was to determine whether: a) intake of dietary fat; or b) a higher than normal …

An Agent-Based Approach For Information Source Selection Under Distributed Information Environments, Hui Yang Jan 2002

An Agent-Based Approach For Information Source Selection Under Distributed Information Environments, Hui Yang

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In this thesis, we introduce a new approach, agent-based intelligent information source selection, which is an alternative way for overcoming the problem of information selection from distributed information sources by using three artificial intelligence techniques, including query expansion with a Naive Bayes text classifier, intelligent information selection with case-based reasoning and adaptation to the dynamic web environment with reinforcement learning. My contribution to this research is to propose an intelligent environment where the Analysis Agent, Case-Matching Agent and Learning Agent, these three major agents iteratively work together to locate the most appropriate information sources to search so as to effectively …

Differentiating Thermal From Non-Thermal Eccrine Sweating During Exercise And Heat Stress, Andrew Hosie Jan 2002

Differentiating Thermal From Non-Thermal Eccrine Sweating During Exercise And Heat Stress, Andrew Hosie

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This project investigated the non-thermal factors which influence the control of eccrine sweating during exercise, with particular emphasis upon mechanoreceptor feedback and feedforward regulation. The aim of this project was to attempt to differentiate between these two neural pathways using three experimental treatments (active exercise; passive exercise and passive heating), with core temperature clamped among treatments and two pedal frequencies used for both the active and passive exercise conditions. It was hypothesised that during active (dynamic) exercise, sweat rates (m_(subscript SW)) and sweat expulsion frequencies (f(subscript SW)) would exceed those of the passive exercise and passive heating trials. It was …

The Mobility Of Large Anions In Crystals With The Fluorite Structure, Philip S. Lavers Jan 2002

The Mobility Of Large Anions In Crystals With The Fluorite Structure, Philip S. Lavers

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The thesis reports several questions that arise in connection with the thermally induced phenomenon called superionic conduction in the case of halides and oxides with the fluorite structure, principally (i) how can such large anions in a tightly packed configuration move amongst their neighbours with no apparent disruption? and (ii) how can the experimentally observed crowdion structures that involve more than 25% reduction in separation of anions be stable? A third question is posed by the experimentally observed specific heat anomaly that always accompanies the increase in anionic mobility with increasing temperature. The literature review found no answers to these …

Minimising Attainment Deficit: A Grounded Theory Of The Leadership Process In A Large, Public Sector Bureaucracy, George Kriflik Jan 2002

Minimising Attainment Deficit: A Grounded Theory Of The Leadership Process In A Large, Public Sector Bureaucracy, George Kriflik

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis explains the concept of Minimising Attainment Deficit. This is a leadership process whereby leaders help workers fulfil their expectations of achieving their potential in their work.

The purpose of the research was to generate a theory of the leadership process within a large, slow change, public sector, engineering bureaucracy. The aims were to discover the main concern of workers and to explain the leadership processes that resolved this main concern. The substantive processual theory of minimising attainment deficit has been presented as the basic social process which resolves the main concern of workers wishing to minimise the gap …
