Given a C-algebra A with a KMS weight for a circle action, we construct and compute a secondary invariant on the equivariant K-theory of the mapping cone of AT ,! A, both in terms of equivariant KK-theory and in terms of a semifinite spectral flow. This in particular puts the previously considered examples of Cuntz algebras [10] and SUqð2Þ [14] in a general framework. As a new example we consider the Araki-Woods IIIl representations of the Fermion algebra.

The behaviour of saturated soft clays subjected to cyclic loading is of considerable importance in the design of railway subgrades. Soft clays can be extensively found in many coastal regions of Australia up to significant depths, including the coastal belt and the central part of NSW. These soft clay deposits are characterised by very low bearing capacity and excessive settlement. The increase in generated excess pore pressures due to heavy freight trains significantly reduces the bearing capacity and causes serious damage to the rail infrastructure such as clay pumping underneath railway tracks and excessive subsidence. Novel TiO2(B)@carbon composite nanowires were simply prepared by a two-step hydrothermal process with subsequent heat treatment in argon. The nanostructures exhibit the unique feature of having TiO2(B) encapsulated inside and an amorphous carbon layer coating the outside. The unique core/shell structure and chemical composition is likely to lead to perfect performance in many applications. In this paper, the results of Li-ion battery testing are presented to demonstrate the superior cyclic performance and rate capability of the TiO2(B)@carbon nanowires. With the aim of simulating the behavior of saturated sand with initial static shear (i.e., sloped ground) undergoing undrained cyclic loading, which leads to liquefaction and large cyclic shear strain development, an elasto-plastic constitutive model which can describe both monotonic and cyclic torsional shear behaviors of saturated sand under drained and/or undrained conditions is presented. It can simulate qualitatively the stress-strain relationship and the effective stress path, even after the specimen enters fully liquefied state. With the aim of gaining a better understanding of the role which the static shear plays on the large-deformation behavior of saturated sand, a series of undrained cyclic torsional shear tests on saturated Toyoura sand specimens up to single amplitude shear strain of about 50 % were performed. Several hollow cylinder specimens at relative density of 44 - 48 % were tested while varying the initial static shear and the subsequent cyclic shear stress levels. Experimental Study On The Effectiveness Of Prefabricated Vertical Drains Under Cyclic Loading, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Buddhima Indraratna, Guanghui Meng

This study is an attempt to investigate the effectiveness of a prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) installed in remoulded soft clay, where a large-scale cyclic triaxial process simulation rig was employed to simulate cyclic loading representing a track environment. The experimental data show that PVD successfully prevents excessive accumulation of pore water pressure during cyclic loading, and their dissipation continues to occur after the load is removed. The findings of this study have direct significance to rail track environments, e.g. in coastal Australia, where PVD installation beneath rail tracks constructed on low-lying estuarine soils has been recently adopted.
