The Role Of Companion Animals In The Lives Of University Students During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Cindy Ly
The Role Of Companion Animals In The Lives Of University Students During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Cindy Ly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The coronavirus 2019 pandemic introduced a new array of daily stressors, known as daily hassles, to the lives of university students. This study used the Stress, Appraisal, and Coping theory (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) to understand how university students were affected by daily hassles and how they were coping with hassles-based stress, as well as how their companion animals provided social support during the stress and coping process. In this study, it was hypothesized that: (1) university students who experienced more daily hassles would experience higher perceived stress and lower overall life satisfaction; (2) university students who made effective use …

University Students Using Physical Activity As A Coping Strategy During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jory Fulcher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is the most recent threat to global health (Fauci, Lane, & Redfield, 2020), impacting university students’ mental and physical health. Few studies currently exist that investigate the impact of online learning and COVID-19 have on stress and coping in university students (Bao, 2020; Xiao et al., 2020). Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate if students were using physical activity as a coping strategy for stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. An online survey assessing student stress, physical activity, and coping flexibility was completed by 276 undergraduate students (mean age 21.1 ± 2.7 …

Asian Canadian Therapists’ Experience And Coping With Racial Microaggression: A Qualitative Examination With Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Yiu-Yin Chang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While studies have shown that racial microaggressions are common and recurring experiences for racial minority therapists, Asians are underrepresented in the existing research. The present study examined Asian Canadian therapists’ lived experiences with racial microaggressions and their coping responses in clinical practice and professional settings. Semi-structured interviews were conducted through the online Microsoft Teams platform with nine Asian therapists. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim, and data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Two relevant superordinate themes emerged from the analysis. The first, “encountering the complexities of microaggressions,” illustrated participants’ experiences with different forms of microaggressions, demonstrating their ambiguity …

Navigating Online And Offline Social Spaces: Interpersonal Relationships And Problematic Gaming Behaviour In Mmorpg Players, Aranda Christine Wingsiong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous research suggests that individuals who play Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games (MMORPGs) may experience interpersonal benefits from their in-game interactions with other players (Kaczmarek & Drazkowski, 2014). At times, however, these online relationships may develop at the expense of their offline relationships and some players may even be at risk for developing problematic gaming behaviours (PGB). The current study aimed to better understand the online and offline interpersonal experiences of MMORPG players and to identify interpersonal risk factors for developing PGB. A total of 149 MMORPG players between the ages of 18 to 46 years completed a set of …
Coping With Intergenerational Conflict Among Chinese Canadian Emerging Adults: Testing A Cultural And Contextual Model With A Mixed-Methods Approach, Siqi Huang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined coping with intergenerational conflict in Chinese Canadian emerging adults who were permanent residents or citizens of Canada. A mixed-methods design was used; 218 participants completed online questionnaires and 10 participants completed 50-minute individual interviews. In line with previous research, intergenerational conflict was negatively associated with psychological, physical, and relational well-being in Chinese Canadian emerging adults. Engagement coping and private emotional outlets mediated the relation between intergenerational conflict and well-being. Lower intergenerational conflict severity was related to more engagement coping, which was associated with greater well-being. Conversely, higher intergenerational conflict was associated with more usage of private emotional …

Stress, Coping, And Religiosity Among Recent Syrian Refugees In Canada, Sara Keshavarzi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As of November 2015, 34 696 Syrian refugees have resettled in Canada (Government of Canada, 2016). Previous studies with refugee populations have found: a) depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder resulting from trauma in their country of origin; and b) problems with discrimination and Islamophobia in new host cultures. Thus, coping strategies have been crucial for refugees to thrive in their new host countries. The current study conducted qualitative interviews with 10 recently arrived Muslim, Arab, Syrian refugees in Windsor, Ontario. The interviews explored participants’ pre- and post-arrival experiences in Syria and Canada. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded …

Emotion Socialization, Anxiety, And Coping In University Students, Clare Hinch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current study was to investigate emotion socialization in childhood as a predictor of anxiety and coping in adulthood. University undergraduate students (N = 204) completed online self-report questionnaires on the history of their childhood emotion socialization, their trait and public speaking anxiety, and coping behaviours. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 44 years (29 men and 164 women). Self-report by participants of emotion socialization by their mothers in childhood significantly predicted current trait anxiety, adaptive coping, and maladaptive coping. Self-report by participants of emotion socialization by their fathers in childhood significantly predicted current trait anxiety, …
Just Breathe: Mindfulness, Self-Regulation, And Cardiac Reactivity, Marta Kadziolka
Just Breathe: Mindfulness, Self-Regulation, And Cardiac Reactivity, Marta Kadziolka
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dispositional mindfulness is the non-judgmental moment-to-moment awareness of transient thoughts, feelings, and sensations as they arise in the attentional field (Kabat-Zinn, 1990). This phenomenon has been a primary element of various clinical interventions for many years. However, little is known about the active ingredients of mindfulness that promote emotional self-regulation and coping. The aim of this dissertation was to address this gap through three related studies which utilized an undergraduate sample. The first study used a laboratory protocol that required participants to perform several mildly stressful tasks related to emotional recall, mindful breathing, and a recovery condition. The hypothesis that …

Parentification, Coping, And Distress In Siblings Of Individuals With And Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Aranda Christine Wingsiong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Parentification refers to the intergenerational role-reversal within a family wherein a child is assigned the adult caregiving role. Typically-developing siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities often experience increased caregiving responsibilities compared to their peers (Cuskelly & Gunn, 2003) and face unique challenges within their sibling relationship (Petalas et al., 2009), which may place them at a greater risk for parentification. The purpose of the current study was to compare parentification experiences, coping strategies, and social and behavioural adjustment between 30 siblings (age 17 to 25 years) of individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and 179 siblings of individuals without disabilities. Contrary …
Psychological Help-Seeking Among Latin American Immigrants In Canada: Testing A Culturally-Expanded Model Of The Theory Of Reasoned Action Using Path Analysis, B.C.H Kuo, Alma Roldan-Bau, Robert Lowinger
Psychological Help-Seeking Among Latin American Immigrants In Canada: Testing A Culturally-Expanded Model Of The Theory Of Reasoned Action Using Path Analysis, B.C.H Kuo, Alma Roldan-Bau, Robert Lowinger
Psychology Publications
The current study investigated the psychosocial and cultural predictors of psychological help-seeking based on the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA: Ajzen and Fishbein 1980) in a sample of 223 adult Latin American immigrants living in Canada. Using path analysis, the results provided empirical support for the TRA, as both help-seeking attitudes and subjective norms were found to influence participants’ help-seeking intentions. Moreover, the re-specified culturally-expanded model showed a good fit to the data and revealed the direct and indirect effects that bi-directional acculturation (Latino and Canadian Cultural orientations), familism, and collective coping had on help-seeking intentions. The results point to …
Feeling The Pressure: Differences In Blood Pressure Among Working Undergraduate Students, Robert Lee Dufour
Feeling The Pressure: Differences In Blood Pressure Among Working Undergraduate Students, Robert Lee Dufour
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Studies have shown that being employed while pursuing post-secondary education may lead to higher levels of perceived stress and unhealthy behaviours. The current study involved a hierarchical regression model to analyze both perceived stress and blood pressure (BP) as a function of the number of hours worked per week (HW). Seventy-four undergraduate students from the from the University of Windsor completed measures of perceived stress, coping, physical activity, and daily hassles, and had their BP recorded after ten minutes of rest. There was a correlation between HW and systolic BP (r = .23, p = .04). Problem-focused coping was negatively …
Coping, Acculturation, And Psychological Adaptation Among Migrants: A Theoretical And Empirical Review And Synthesis Of The Literature, B.C.H Kuo
Psychology Publications
Given the continuous, dynamic demographic changes internationally due to intensive worldwide migration and globalization, the need to more fully understand how migrants adapt and cope with acculturation experiences in their new host cultural environment is imperative and timely. However, a comprehensive review of what we currently know about the relationship between coping behavior and acculturation experience for individuals undergoing cultural changes has not yet been undertaken. Hence, the current article aims to compile, review, and examine cumulative cross-cultural psychological research that sheds light on the relationships among coping, acculturation, and psychological and mental health outcomes for migrants. To this end, …
Factors Predicting Adolescents' And Parents' Help Seeking Behaviour, Jennifer Lynn Cometto
Factors Predicting Adolescents' And Parents' Help Seeking Behaviour, Jennifer Lynn Cometto
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adolescents' perceptions and responses to mental health problems have been shown to have significant implications for their future competence, coping skills, well-being, and subsequent life choices; yet, as few as 25 percent of young Canadians with mental health problems seek help (Bergeron, Poirier, Fournier, Roberge, & Barrette, 2005). The purpose of this study was to examine the stages of adolescent help seeking (i.e., recognizing the problem, deciding to seek professional help, and seeking professional help ) to better understand why some adolescents seek help and others do not. Specific predisposing, enabling, and need factors were examined as predictors of adolescents' …
Mediating Effects Of Coping In The Link Between Spirituality And Psychological Distress In A Culturally Diverse Undergraduate Sample, B.C.H Kuo
Psychology Publications
The present study sets out to examine the spirituality-coping-health link in a culturally and religiously diverse undergraduate sample (N = 301) in Canada. Specifically, this investigation: (a) assessed intrinsic spirituality with a factorially derived measure, created based on a multidimensional measure of spirituality; (b) tested the mediating role of coping in the spirituality-psychological well-being relation with a validated cross-cultural measure of coping; and (c) examined this complex, multivariate web of relationships with a path analysis. The results showed that Intrinsic Spirituality reduced Psychological Distress, promoted the use of Collective Coping, and reduced the use of Avoidance Coping. Furthermore, Engagement Coping …

Seeking Help For Psychological Distress: The Role Of Acculturation, Family Relationships, Coping, And Stigma Among Latin Americans In Canada, Alma E. Roldan-Bau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present research investigated help-seeking intentions among Latin American adults living in Canada. Path analysis was utilized to test the utility of the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA; Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) to explain help-seeking in this population. The impact of various additional variables, including stigma, perceived barriers, and cultural variables (e.g., familism, acculturation, coping) was also examined. The sample consisted of 223 Latin American adults living in Canada. Participants had the option to complete the study questionnaire online or in a paper format and in their language of choice (i.e., English or Spanish). Qualitative data were collected using an …

The Role Of Attachment In Young Adults' Use Of Facebook For Coping, Jaime Michelle Arseneault
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Internet has become integrated into the daily lives of adolescents and young adults, and researchers have begun to investigate the predictors, correlates, and consequences of Internet use. Research has suggested that individuals with social strengths and individuals with social weaknesses both may benefit from using the Internet to cope. The purpose of this study was to explore the relations among attachment, offline coping, online coping, and adjustment, as well as to evaluate whether the rich-get-richer or social compensation hypotheses of Internet use explained these relations. Undergraduate students aged 17 to 25 years ( N = 296) completed online measures …

Perceptions Of Severity And The Role Of Coping In University Students' Experiences With Online Partner Aggression Victimization, Mary G. Simmering Mcdonald
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite the frequency with which individuals are currently communicating via forms of technology and the unique features of online communication (i.e., lack of verbal and nonverbal cues, ability to send messages with greater frequency, opportunity to make personal information public, etc.), few studies have considered individuals' perceptions of and experiences with online partner aggression victimization. Through quantitative and qualitative methods, the present research investigated university students' ( N = 349; 82.1% female) experiences of online partner aggression victimization occurring via email, instant messaging, and social networking sites and their perceptions of severity of the aggressive acts. In addition, information was …
