Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research Publications

Inland fisheries assessment and management are challenging given the inherent complexity of working in diverse habitats (e.g., rivers, lakes, wetlands) that are dynamic on organisms that are often cryptic and where fishers are often highly mobile. Yet, technoscience is offering new tools that have the potential to reimagine how inland fisheries are assessed and managed. So-called “technoscience” refers to instances in which science and technology unfurl together, offering novel ways of spurring and achieving meaningful change. This paper considers the role of technoscience and its potential for modernizing the assessment and management of inland fisheries. It first explores technoscience and …

Ecoacoustic Monitoring Of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser Fulvescens) Spawning And Its Relation To Anthropogenic Noise, Dennis M. Higgs, Riley K. Beach Dec 2021

Ecoacoustic Monitoring Of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser Fulvescens) Spawning And Its Relation To Anthropogenic Noise, Dennis M. Higgs, Riley K. Beach

Integrative Biology Publications

Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) are endangered in the Laurentian Great Lakes with increasing binational efforts to establish spawning grounds to aid restoration. While SCUBA surveys can document spawning activity, these are labour-intensive and may disrupt spawning. We used passive acoustic monitoring to quantify spawning sounds of lake sturgeon as a first step to developing remote sensing of sturgeon spawning grounds. Acipenser sp. are known to make a variety of sounds including, “thunders” (aka drums), which have been documented in A. fulvescens during spawning. We quantified drums from a known spawning bed. We recorded 5 different potential sturgeon sounds but only …

Validation Of The Reading Tendency Index In School-Age Children: Replication With A Bilingual Sample, Amanda M. O’Brien Jul 2019

Validation Of The Reading Tendency Index In School-Age Children: Replication With A Bilingual Sample, Amanda M. O’Brien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Defining deficits in reading ability may be accomplished through the analysis of a child’s reading tendencies, representing a possible paradigm shift in the conceptualization and assessment of reading disabilities. Based on this premise, Mohl and colleagues (2018) developed a quantitative paradigm to measure reading tendency in children through performance on two lexical decision tasks (LDTs) that differentially rely on decoding and sightword reading abilities. The Reading Tendency Index (RTI; Mohl et al., 2018) is calculated from the differential between drift rates on the phonologic and orthographic LDTs. Scores closer to zero represent a balanced approach whereas scores as a negative …

Integrated Assessment Of Assembly Fixtures Re-Configurability, Diana Naser Jan 2019

Integrated Assessment Of Assembly Fixtures Re-Configurability, Diana Naser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The needs of consumers are changing over time. As a result, the manufacturers are looking for new methods to adapt effectively and efficiently to market changes. These involve supplying customers with a variety of products in a reasonable time with decreasing the cost. Reconfigurable fixtures are an important means for dealing with increased product variety and shorter life cycles, as they help change between the product variants effectively and decrease the time and resources required to introduce new product variants. In this thesis, an integrated method to assess the reconfigurability of assembly fixtures is developed. This assessment is based on …

Metrics For Assessment And Management Of Lean Manufacturing Implementation, Mina Ghali Sep 2018

Metrics For Assessment And Management Of Lean Manufacturing Implementation, Mina Ghali

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research is to introduce a new concept of auditing and implementing Lean Manufacturing by translating qualitative criteria to quantitative metrics. Therefore, quantitative formulas were developed to produce a numeric score, representing the progress of three lean manufacturing tools implementation. The tools are 5S, Kaizen, and Value Stream Mapping. The scores could then be compared to an ideal state or a standard set by industrial studies (i.e. baseline). These tools were chosen based on the researcher’s industrial experience and the gap seen in assessing the implementation of these three tools. Other metric formulas with the same approach could be derived …

The Association Between Sentence Repetition And Other Cognitive Abilities In School-Aged Children, Alicia Nicole Bartlett Sep 2018

The Association Between Sentence Repetition And Other Cognitive Abilities In School-Aged Children, Alicia Nicole Bartlett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the association between sentence repetition and other cognitive abilities in 6- to 14-year-old children (N = 118; 60% female) recruited from schools in Windsor, Ontario. The effect of age and sex on children's SR was also examined. Children completed Benton's (1965) sentence repetition task, which required them to repeat a series of 26 verbally presented sentences of increasing length. Language, auditory verbal memory, processing speed, fluid reasoning, and visual perception were measured with subtests from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (5th edition) and auditory nonverbal memory was assessed with the Seashore Rhythm Test. A multiple …

Altering Assessment For Greater Achievement: An Evaluation Of Students’ Attitudes And Level Of Engagement With Mtuner, Lindsay Shaw Oct 2017

Altering Assessment For Greater Achievement: An Evaluation Of Students’ Attitudes And Level Of Engagement With Mtuner, Lindsay Shaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With technology at the fingertips of most undergraduate students, it has been difficult for instructors to fully engage them in the classroom, which has resulted in the creation of several innovative interventions, such as mTuner. mTuner integrates several cognitive learning strategies within an assessment, with the goal of actually enhancing learning, as opposed to just measuring it. In the current study, students’ attitudes, level of engagement, and performance were evaluated, with specific explorations into academic entitlement (AE), test anxiety (TA), learning orientation (LO) and grade orientation (GO). Results indicated that students had very positive attitudes toward mTuner, especially in comparison …

The Development Of A Scale To Detect Feigned Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) In Adults, Sanya Sagar Oct 2017

The Development Of A Scale To Detect Feigned Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) In Adults, Sanya Sagar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by a pattern of attentional deficits, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity that tends to persist into adulthood for a subset of the individuals affected. In an attempt to address the high base rate of feigned ADHD in university settings (estimates ranging from 25 to 50% of those assessed), the objective of the present study was to develop and validate the Hyperactivity/Inattention Trait Scale (HITS), specifically designed to differentiate between feigned and genuine adult ADHD. The HITS was administered online to a sample of undergraduate students, along with several performance validity tests, aimed at detecting …

The Use Of Argument Maps As An Assessment Tool In Higher Education, Chrysi Rapanta, Douglas Walton Jan 2016

The Use Of Argument Maps As An Assessment Tool In Higher Education, Chrysi Rapanta, Douglas Walton

CRRAR Publications

The use of argument diagrams to foster argumentation has been an object of research in education, as a way to support students' argumentative interaction and, potentially learning. In this paper it is shown how argument analysis and evaluation assisted by means of argument diagramming tools, further developed in artificial intelligence (AI), can also support the assessment of argumentation skills in the classroom. A case study is presented to show how informal logic contributions on fallacies, in particular, can be combined with the data of an argument-diagramming task, to form a method of assessing students' weaknesses in reasoning about everyday issues …

Establishment Of Asynchronous Rapport With Test Administrator: A Comparison Of Online And In-Person Testing Procedures, Natalie Gayle Frost Oct 2015

Establishment Of Asynchronous Rapport With Test Administrator: A Comparison Of Online And In-Person Testing Procedures, Natalie Gayle Frost

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rapport is often established with clients prior to psychological testing to facilitate self-disclosure and ease anxiety. Test administrators need to find ways to build rapport with clients prior to online tests. The present study examined whether asynchronous rapport, a positive relationship established without real-time interaction, could form between an online test administrator and participants. This study examined the effects of a rapport-building procedure prior to, and consistency of scores on, online and offline measures. Separated by a one-week interval, undergraduate students completed both online and paper-and-pencil versions of measures of perceived rapport, self-disclosure, social and state anxiety. Participants were randomly …

An Investigation Of How Written Feedback Influences Applied Level Mathematics Students' Perceptions Of Assessment, Rina Lynn Hyland Jan 2015

An Investigation Of How Written Feedback Influences Applied Level Mathematics Students' Perceptions Of Assessment, Rina Lynn Hyland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Providing written feedback is common practice in education. This study explores how feedback practices influence applied level mathematics students' perceptions of assessment. The study was conducted in a grade 9 applied mathematics class using mixed methods. An adaptation of the Instructional Feedback Orientation Scale (IFOS) (King et al., 2009) was used to measure changes in students' orientations towards feedback during the course of a semester in a classroom where research-based feedback practices were implemented. Statistical analysis did not reveal significant changes of student perceptions of assessments. One-on-one interviews revealed that recommended feedback practices, while perceived as useful by students, did …
