Invasive species have become a grave threat to the economic viability of our global vegetable producers. Tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) has expanded from its range originating from Peru to being established in nearly hundreds of countries, causing tomato production losses of up to 100% on occasion; however, it has not yet been found in Canada or the USA. Southwestern Ontario is a significant tomato producer making it a high risk from this invasive species. Since the Multiculturalism Act of 1971, Canadian literature has resounded with the voices of racially and ethnically marginalized Canadians striving to contribute their own stories and experiences in a country that prides itself on its inclusivity. It is problematic then, when novels that are a part of the Canadian canon or contribute to Canadian cultural capital in some way, offer a narrative that allows integration only to white males. Immigration is important to Canada. Migrants replenish our declining population, help drive our economy, and contribute to our labour market. By 2036, almost half of the Canadian population will be either first-generation or second-generation immigrants. While the migrant experience varies, it is recognized to be deeply challenging. This study focuses on pre-service teacher candidate’s confidence in their ability to integrate diversity into their classrooms. Teacher candidates were given the Multicultural Efficacy Scale (MES), where their efficacy scores were compared based on their enrollment in the enrichment program Leadership Experience for Academic Direction (LEAD). LEAD candidates are provided with teaching strategies, meta-cognitive and leadership/mentoring skills, resources, professional development opportunities, and are placed with Student Success Teachers during practicum to learn from students deemed “in risk” . The results found that LEAD candidates scored higher on efficacy than NONLEAD candidates. LEAD candidates were also given open-ended questions to explore …
