Task Characteristics And Individual Differences In Task Design For Computer-Based Clerical Work., Christian Andrew. De Keresztes

It was proposed that the principal effects of computerization on job content in clerical work can be described in terms of increasing or decreasing task complexity and job decision latitude. The purpose of the study was as follows: (a) to investigate, in computer-based clerical tasks, the effects of variations in task complexity and job decision latitude on performance, subjective workload, and perceptual and affective responses to the work; and (b) to assess the effects of individual differences in abilities, personal control beliefs, and work preferences on reactions to task characteristics. In 1948, Claude Shannon published an article entitled, "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" in The Bell System Technical Journal. Shannon's twenty-three theorems proved to be a watershed in the field of electrical engineering. Equally intriguing is the fact that mathematical communication theory has been adopted and modified to suit the research interests of a wide range of disciplines spanning the arts, the pure and applied sciences, and the social sciences. The effects of a two-stage mentoring program on the values, attitudes and behaviours associated with the educational and occupational goals of elementary school females was explored within a symbolic interaction framework. It was proposed that the provision of educational and occupational role expectations, other than the traditional ones, through a variety of mentoring experiences with senior university students and women in the community would expand young elementary school females' awareness, interest and expectations in a non-traditional direction. The Metabolism Of 4-Deoxy-4-Fluoro-D-Glucose In Pseudomonas Putida., Diego Delfino Livio. Sbrissa

Uniformly carbon-14-labelled 4-deoxy-4-fluoro-D-glucose (D-(U-$\sp{14}$C) 4FG) is synthesized for the first time and used to follow the fate of 4-deoxy-4-fluoro-D-glucose (4FG) in Pseudomonas putida. Following a 24-hour incubation of a suspension of glucose-grown whole cells of P. putida with 1 millimolar(mM) D- (U-$\sp{14}$C) 4FG under conditions giving a 95% release of F$\sp-$, less than 1% of the radiolabel is found to be covalently associated with the peptidoglycan present in the cell-envelope fraction, more than 50% of the radiolabel accumulates in the suspending medium, and as much as 5% of the radiolabel is recovered as a volatile product which appears to be …

Steady, laminar, natural convection in a vertical, rectangular, air filled enclosure, has been studied numerically. The enclosure is formed by two flat, parallel vertical plates, enclosed on the top and bottom by flat horizontal parallel plates. A 2-dimensional model is considered in the present study. Emphasis has been given to treating the cavity as a double glazed window, which requires the height to width (distance between vertical plates) ratio to be as high as 80. A review of the literature indicated that females may have a tendency towards greater rating extremity than do males when rating people. The literature on gender-role identity suggested that this may reflect a greater interest on the part of females in the task of rating people. This hypothesis was tested by classifying the subject population into gender-role catagories using the Bern Sex Role Inventory. The type of elements to be rated were manipulated in order to test for an interaction between gender-identity and rating extremity. Accuracy in making probability judgments about the characteristics of data distributions was examined in this study. In particular, the effects of four characteristics on probability estimation: problem type, variability of the data distribution, amount of information, and anchor point were investigated. Previous research has examined the impact of single factors on single measures of subjective probability (usually the mean), but has not studied the interaction of factors or used more than one dependent measure. A questionnaire containing two problem scenarios was given to 747 introductory psychology students. One scenario dealt with the amount of rainfall in cm. per year in …

Female entrepreneurship is a relatively new phenomenon in North America due to two distinct yet interrelated sociological issues - increased labour force involvement and higher level of education attainment. Historically women did not work outside the home, or if they did, they were in traditionally female-oriented jobs such as nursing or secretarial. Forerunners of entrepreneurial businesses such as in-home private babysitting, private housekeeping services and hobby related activities, although they generated income, were rarely claimed for tax purposes and therefore went unrecognized in proprietorship statistics.
