Breast cancer is one of the paramount causes of new cancer cases worldwide annually. It is a malignant neoplasm that develops in the breast cells. The early screening of this disease is essential to prevent its metastasis. A mammogram X-ray image is the most common screening tool practiced currently when this disease is suspected; all the breast lesions identified are not malignant. The invasive fine needle aspiration (FNA) of a breast mass sample is the secondary screening tool to clinically examine cancerous lesions. The visual image analysis of the stained aspirated sample imposes a challenge for the cytologist to identify …

The impact of waves, storm surge, and aeolian transport associated with Post-tropical Storm Fiona (offshore significant wave height ∽ 8 m, storm surge up to 2 m) on the sandy beaches and foredunes of the north shore of Prince Edward Island National Park (PEINP), Canada, are assessed. Management policies and practices, as they apply to sandy beach systems within PEINP, are reviewed in the context of the shoreline changes attributed to Fiona. The effectiveness of these policies and practices are evaluated to inform the potential performance of beach-foredune systems as natural protection measures that mitigate the impacts of large-magnitude storms …

The circadian clock is a molecular timekeeper, present from cyanobacteria to mammals, that coordinates internal physiology with the external environment. The clock has a 24-h period however development proceeds with its own timing, raising the question of how these interact. Using the intestine of Drosophila melanogaster as a model for organ development, we track how and when the circadian clock emerges in specific cell types. We find that the circadian clock begins abruptly in the adult intestine and gradually synchronizes to the environment after intestinal development is complete. This delayed start occurs because individual cells at earlier stages lack the …

The Salience Of Students’ Body Language During In-Person And Online Lectures At A Canadian University, Giuliana Salvato
Languages, Literatures and Cultures Publications
Professors teaching different disciplines at a university in Canada received an email invitation to fill-out an online questionnaire where they could reflect on and express their opinions about the pedagogical and communicative roles of the body during their lectures. The questionnaire was divided into two parts: one asking professors to comment on their own body language; the other inquiring about professors’ perception of their students’ body language usage. This article is specifically focused on the second part of the survey, where professors reacted to questions concerning awareness of students’ body language during classes held in-person and online. In investigating the …

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional primary care teams (IPCTs) work together to enhance care. Despite evidence on the benefits of IPCTs, implementation remains challenging. This research aims to 1) identify and prioritize barriers and enablers, and 2) co-develop team-level strategies to support IPCT implementation in Nova Scotia, Canada.
METHODS: Healthcare providers and staff of IPCTs were invited to complete an online survey to identify barriers and enablers, and the degree to which each item impacted the functioning of their team. Top ranked items were identified using the sum of frequency x impact for each response. A virtual knowledge sharing event was held to …

rook charr is a cold-water species which is highly sensitive to increased water temperatures, such as those associated with climate change. Environmental variation can potentially induce phenotypic changes that are inherited across generations, for instance, via epigenetic mechanisms. Here, we tested whether parental thermal regimes (intergenerational plasticity) and offspring-rearing temperatures (within-generational plasticity) modify the brain transcriptome of Brook charr progeny (fry stage). Parents were exposed to either cold or warm temperatures during final gonad maturation and their progeny were reared at 5 or 8 °C during the first stages of development. Illumina Novaseq6000 was used to sequence the brain transcriptome …

With the precipitous changes of the platform formerly known as Twitter, brought on by the change of ownership in late 2022, many networked educators sought, and continue to seek, new digital spaces to continue fostering and developing their digital practice. The authors of this article had all been actively networked on Twitter, and wanted to explore these changes in their professional worlds. As we sought out these spaces we critically began to interrogate our own practices on this platform to gain a deeper understanding of our practice going forward. We’ve approached this exploration through three vectors: an examination of the …

Virtual Justice: A Complex Portrait Of Canadian Self-Represented Litigant Experiences With Virtual Hearings, Jennifer Leitch, Dayna Cornwall, David Lundgren
National Self Represented Litigants Project
“Virtual Justice: A complex portrait of Canadian self-represented litigant experiences with virtual hearings” is the result of a year-long project generously funded through a grant from the McLachlin Fund, with the goal of understanding the experiences of Canadian self-represented litigants (SRLs) with virtual hearings since the onset of the pandemic, when such processes began to dramatically increase and become much more common.
Using a survey and focus groups, we gathered data from many SRLs with experiences across jurisdictions and types of legal matter. The results reflect the fact that SRLs’ experiences with virtual hearings are, in fact, quite varied. Approximately …

Leading theories of the recent history of sexuality have pointed to trends toward detraditionalization and precarity in intimate relations, but also to democratization and innovation. This study grounded in 79 qualitative interviews with men seeking men online considers their experiences in light of these theories. The rise of dating apps has generated sexual fields that have shaped the sexual subjectivities of the current era in multiple ways. The narratives of study participants show much more than the hook-up culture that dating apps are best known for. They speak to experiences of superficiality, unmet expectations, and sometimes bruising intersections with hierarchies …
Racial Trauma And The Impact On Black Girls In Canada, Keisha Evans
Racial Trauma And The Impact On Black Girls In Canada, Keisha Evans
Social Work Publications
The purpose of this article seeks to reveal a practice gap in the field of Social Work as it relates to the unique lived experiences of Black girls and the impact of racial trauma on their wellbeing. As a consequence of anti-Black racism, racial trauma represents an under researched area of study with limited data on how to deploy best trauma-informed practices in a culturally-safe space. By adopting a theoretical foundation grounded in critical race theory (CRT) and Black feminist theory (BFT), we are situating Black girls at the center of this discourse with an intersectional sensibility. In closing, we …

Expanding Analytical Capabilities In Intrusion Detection Through Ensemble-Based Multi-Label Classification, Ehsan Hallaji, Roozbeh Razavi-Far, Mehrdad Saif
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Intrusion detection systems are primarily designed to flag security breaches upon their occurrence. These systems operate under the assumption of single-label data, where each instance is assigned to a single category. However, when dealing with complex data, such as malware triage, the information provided by the IDS is limited. Consequently, additional analysis becomes necessary, leading to delays and incurring additional computational costs. Existing solutions to this problem typically merge these steps by considering a unified, but large, label set encompassing both intrusion and analytical labels, which adversely affects efficiency and performance. To address these challenges, this paper presents a novel …

Hazard Flagging As A Risk Mitigation Strategy For Violence Against Emergency Medical Service, Justin Mausz, Dan Piquette, Robert Bradford, Mandy Johnston, Alan M. Batt, Elizabeth Donnelly
Social Work Publications
Paramedics are increasingly being subjected to violence, creating the potential for significant physical and psychological harm. Where a patient has a history of violent behavior, hazard flags—applied either to the individual, their residential address, or phone number—can alert paramedics to the possibility of violence, potentially reducing the risk of injury. Leveraging a novel violence reporting process embedded in the electronic patient care record, we reviewed violence reports filed over a thirteen-month period since its inception in February 2021 to assess the effectiveness of hazard flagging as a potential risk mitigation strategy. Upon reviewing a report, paramedic supervisors can generate a …

Health Care Use Experiences Of Ethnoculturally Diverse Immigrant Older Adults: A Meta-Ethnography, Lorna De Witt, Kathryn A. Pfaff, Roger Reka, Noeman Ahmad Mirza
Nursing Publications
Purpose
Current and predicted continued dramatic increases in international migration and ethnocultural diversity of older adult cohorts pose challenges for health care services. Review studies on ethnoculturally diverse older adults and health care show a lack of focus on their service use experiences. This study aims to report a meta-ethnography that addresses this knowledge gap through answering the review question: How do ethnoculturally diverse older adults who are immigrants experience health care services?
Design/methodology/approach
The authors applied a seven-phase method of meta-ethnography to guide the review. The authors conducted two literature searches (April 2018 and June 2020) in MEDLINE, CINAHL, …

Death And Pleasure In Wallace Stevens’ ‘The Emperor Of Ice-Cream', Thomas Dilworth
English Publications
Unconcerned with preparations for a wake or funeral, ‘The Emperor of Ice-Cream’ is a general statement about life and in particular pleasure, which the speaker enthusiastically endorses and celebrates in stanza one. A pervasive motif of contained pleasureables and the presence of a corpse in stanza two support the speaker’s implication that pleasure sometimes deviates from morality and sanity.

A Prospective Longitudinal Study Of Depression, Perceived Stress, And Perceived Control In Resettled Syrian Refugees’ Mental Health And Psychosocial Adaptation, B.C.H Kuo, Lance M. Rappaport
Psychology Publications
This prospective study examined the psychosocial adaptation of a community sample of newly resettled Syrian refugees in Canada (N = 235). Specifically, depressive symptoms, perceived stress, and perceived control were collected in Arabic at baseline and 1-year follow-up. Two theory-informed, cross-lagged panel models demonstrated that higher baseline depressive symptoms predicted lower perceived self-efficacy and lower perceived control at 1-year follow-up. Similarly, baseline depressive symptoms were concurrently correlated with higher perceived helplessness, lower perceived self-efficacy, and lower perceived control. Secondary regression analyses further demonstrated that baseline depressive symptoms predicted lower perceived social support and higher anxiety symptoms, though neither were …
