Comparison Of Mercury Dynamics In High Arctic Lakes, Karista Elizabeth Hudelson Nov 2020

Comparison Of Mercury Dynamics In High Arctic Lakes, Karista Elizabeth Hudelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Arctic lakes and their watersheds are being simultaneously subjected to the deposition of atmospheric pollutants such as mercury (Hg), and warming. Once Hg enters an ecosystem, it may become methylated, greatly increasing its toxicity and reducing organisms’ ability to eliminate it. Mercury is bioaccumulative and thus found at high concentrations in land-locked Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) and other top predators. In sediment, Hg methylation rate is temperature-dependent, and [Hg] in Arctic predatory fish has been correlated with trends in air temperature. Despite reductions in Hg emissions in North America and Europe, [Hg] continues to rise in some Arctic species. The …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wetlands are an ecotone between terrestrial and aquatic environments and therefore support a diverse and unique flora and fauna. Macroinvertebrates make up a substantial portion of the biodiversity. The relationship between aquatic invertebrate community composition and the association with submergent and emergent macrophyte biomass is relatively well documented. However, the constraints imposed by conditions in wet meadow zones – areas that are intermittently flooded but whose soils are typically water-saturated and anoxic are less well understood. I investigated the relative importance of dissolved oxygen along the water depth gradient and its influenced on invertebrate community composition in comparison to the …

Perception And Performance Of Working Memory: Insights Into Test Anxiety, Rebecca Grossman Nov 2020

Perception And Performance Of Working Memory: Insights Into Test Anxiety, Rebecca Grossman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Test anxiety is a common phenomenon that can be detrimental to cognitive performance, academic achievement, and mental health. One mechanism consistently identified as playing a role in such deficits is working memory. While many studies have investigated the relationship between working memory and test anxiety, approaches to measuring working memory have varied between using assorted standardized behavioural measures and self-report inventories. While self-report inventories are often found to be valid, there is some evidence suggesting that subjective appraisal of functioning might not be accurate in all contexts. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether self-appraisal of working …

Control Of Four-Wire Inverter-Interfaced Dgs For Accurate Fault Type Classification, Wael Radwan Nov 2020

Control Of Four-Wire Inverter-Interfaced Dgs For Accurate Fault Type Classification, Wael Radwan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inverter-interfaced distributed generators (IIDGs) generate fault currents that are different from those generated by conventional synchronous generators (SGs). As a result, commercial relays—that utilize current-angle-based phase selection measurements—misidentify faulty phase(s), which adversely impact the grid resiliency and reliability. In this thesis, a new control scheme is proposed to regulate the sequence components of the IIDG currents during unbalanced faults to ensure accurate fault type classification by commercial relays. The proposed controller controls the positive-sequence and negative-sequence currents in the dq-frame with a decoupled synchronous reference frame (DDSRF) based phase-locked loop (PLL) for components extraction and synchronization. It also uses a …
