An Eulerian Finite Element Model For Determination Of Deformation State Of A Copper Subjected To Orthogonal Cutting., Anna G. Raczy Jan 2004

An Eulerian Finite Element Model For Determination Of Deformation State Of A Copper Subjected To Orthogonal Cutting., Anna G. Raczy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of the present work was to develop a finite element model for the prediction of the deformation state of copper subjected to orthogonal cutting. Research completed in the present work showed that the Eulerian element formulation was the most effective in modeling metal cutting, especially when the hydrodynamic material model was employed to represent the workpiece. The following correlations were drawn between the experimental findings and the numerical model employing the hydrodynamic material: (1) The maximum experimental stress (sigma = 422 MPa) and strain (epsilon p = 8.1) were located at the tool tip and corresponded well with …

Dolomitization Of The Devonian Wabamun Carbonates In The Gold Creek Field West Central Alberta, Canada., Daniel A. Rivas C. Jan 2004

Dolomitization Of The Devonian Wabamun Carbonates In The Gold Creek Field West Central Alberta, Canada., Daniel A. Rivas C.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the Peace River Arch (PRA), the Wabamun Group is commonly dolomitized where it overlies Leduc or Nisku patch reefs, grading from limestone to dolostone over relatively short distances. This suggests that fluid-flow accessed the porous carbonate buildups favored dolomitization in the overlying Wabamun. Differential compaction between the rigid reef framework and the surrounding shales (Ireton Formation) during Late Devonian to Early Mississippian is thought to be the trigger for the development of fault and fracture systems that ultimately allowed diagenetic fluids which favored the dolomitization of the Wabamun carbonates. The present study is focused on understanding the dolomitization process …

Phosphonium Stoppered [2]Rotaxanes And Molecular Shuttles., Norma Georges Jan 2004

Phosphonium Stoppered [2]Rotaxanes And Molecular Shuttles., Norma Georges

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis deals with the synthesis of [2]rotaxanes with single and double sites of recognition, containing pyridinium ethane units in their linear components. In the first part, one pyridinium ethane axle with a triethylphosphonium group on one end was synthesized and the possibility of its complexation with 24C8 derivatives was investigated. Although [2]pseudorotaxane formation was limited due to the bulk of the PR4+ stopper, [2]rotaxanes were formed utilising 24-crown-8 ether, benzo-24-crown-8 ether and naphtho-24-crown-8 ether. The crystal structure of the [2]rotaxane containing 24C8 was determined. The dynamic "flip-switch" activity of the asymmetric crown ethers was analysed by variable temperature NMR …

High Precision Theoretical Study Of The Hydrogen Ion., Mark Michael Cassar Jan 2004

High Precision Theoretical Study Of The Hydrogen Ion., Mark Michael Cassar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study of the hydrogen molecule-ion H+2 is presented. The purpose is to show that a carefully modified, doubled basis set in the standard Hylleraas coordinates provides an excellent, yet straightforward, description of this ion without recourse to approximation methods. Three non-linear parameters are used so that distance scales may be set independently for all three radial coordinates r 1, r2 and r12. Vibrational modes are effectively accounted for by including only high powers of the inter-proton coordinate r12. High precision variational calculations are carried out for the 1 1 S ground state, and the first two excited states---2 1S …

Dueling Csp Representations: Local Search In The Primal Versus Dual Constraint Graph., Mingyan Huang Jan 2004

Dueling Csp Representations: Local Search In The Primal Versus Dual Constraint Graph., Mingyan Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) can be used to represent and solve many problems in Artificial Intelligence and the real world. When solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems, many of the methods developed and studied have focused only on the solution of binary CSPs while a large portion of real life problems are naturally modeled as non-binary CSPs. In this thesis we have designed an empirical study to investigate the behaviour of several local search methods in primal and dual constraint graph representations when solving non-binary CSPs. Local search methods tend to find a solution quickly since they generally give up the guarantee …

Dynamic And Static Analyses Of Continuous Curved Composite Multiple-Box Girder Bridges., Magdy Said Samaan Jan 2004

Dynamic And Static Analyses Of Continuous Curved Composite Multiple-Box Girder Bridges., Magdy Said Samaan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Horizontally curved concrete deck on multiple steel box girder bridges is a structurally efficient, economic, and aesthetically pleasing method of supporting curved roadway systems. Modern highway constructions are often in need of bridges with horizontally curved alignments due to the tight geometry restrictions. Continuous curved composite box girder bridges allow for the use of longer spans, thus reducing costs of the substructure. Despite all inherent advantages of continuous curved composite box girder bridges, they do pose challenging problems for engineers in calculating the load distribution due to moving vehicles across the bridges. Curved bridges are subjected to high torsional as …

Hyperfine Structure For The Rydberg States Of Helium-3., Qixue. Wu Jan 2004

Hyperfine Structure For The Rydberg States Of Helium-3., Qixue. Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comprehensive study is made of the hyperfine structure of the helium isotope 3He for all states up to n = 10 and L = 7. High precision values of the hyperfine structure parameters CSS', DS, and ESS' are calculated using the doubled-basis-set Hylleraas-type wave functions developed by Drake. In this calculation, the singlet-triplet states mixing, the Breit relativistic, QED and finite nuclear size effects are included. Hyperfine splittings and hyperfine shifts have been calculated by diagonalizing the complete fine and hyperfine interaction matrix. Our results nicely agree with the available experimental ones. One of the applications of the calculated …

Lbsim: A Simulation System For Dynamic Load-Balancing Algorithms For Distributed Systems., Zhiying Du

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a distributed system consisting of autonomous computational units, the total computational power of all the units needs to be utilized efficiently by applying suitable load-balancing policies. For accomplishing the task, a large number of load balancing algorithms have been proposed in the literature. To facilitate the performance study of each of these load-balancing strategies, simulation has been widely used. However comparison of the load balancing algorithms becomes difficult if a different simulator is used for each case. There have been few studies on generalized simulation of load-balancing algorithms in distributed systems. Most of the simulation systems address the experiments …

Postmodern Penality? Gps Electronic Monitoring And The New Penology., Ryan S. Cotter Jan 2004

Postmodern Penality? Gps Electronic Monitoring And The New Penology., Ryan S. Cotter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within the latter half of the 20th century, contemporary academics have noted a significant reorientation of criminal justice policy and practice. Explanations for this reorientation have been explained by: the emergence of a postmodern penality (Feeley and Simon, 1992); the limits of the sovereign state and the culture of high crime societies (Garland, 1996, 2000); and the imposition of 'New Right' politics (O'Malley, 1999). This thesis specifically examines Feeley and Simon's proposition that a postmodern penality has emerged. It is argued that rather than a replacement of the old penology with a new penology paradigm, contemporary practices are more characteristic …

Rethinking The Revival And Evolution Of The Glengarry Scottish Highland Games: Antimodernism, Commercialization, And Cultural (Re)Production In Rural Eastern Ontario., Courtney W. Mason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1784, after a prolonged and weary struggle to settle in North America, almost fifty families established a homogenous Scottish community in what is currently Glengarry County, Ontario. In 1840, the residents of Glengarry County established a Scottish Highland Games, but a lack of commitment and funding led to their discontinuation after only a few years. In 1948, following an absence of almost a century, the Glengarry Scottish Highland Games tradition was revived. This thesis examines the revival and evolution of the Glengarry Highland Games, including commercial, ideological, and cultural impacts. When rethinking the revival of the games in Glengarry, …

Low Power Cmos Analog Multipliers., Zheng Li Jan 2004

Low Power Cmos Analog Multipliers., Zheng Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

CMOS analog multiplier is a very important building block and programming element in analog signal processing. Although high-performance multipliers using bipolar transistors have been available for 40 years, CMOS multiplier implementation is still a challenging subject especially for low-power and low-noise circuit design. Since the supply voltage is normally fixed for analog multiplier structures, we use the total current to represent the power dissipation. Our basic idea for low power design of analog multipliers is to fit most of the transistors into the linear region, while at the same time keeping the drain-to-source voltage as low as possible to decease …

Nonlinear Stress Analysis And Design Optimization Of Ultra-High Pressure Composite Vessels., Zonghua Chen Jan 2004

Nonlinear Stress Analysis And Design Optimization Of Ultra-High Pressure Composite Vessels., Zonghua Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The automotive industry is one area of potential application for filament-wound composite pressure vessels. Emphasis on reducing emissions promotes the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and also hydrogen fueled vehicles worldwide. Fuel cells in concert with hydrogen gas storage technologies are key requirements. Current ultra-high pressure vessels are low in structural efficiency. Also there exists a fundamental lack of confidence and ability to understand and predict their behaviours. With the complexity of the structure in the dome area and the relatively complicated mechanical properties of composite materials, complete theoretical analyses of ultra-high pressure composite vessels are almost impossible. The …

These were analyzed with one-way ANOVAs and correlations with participants' ratings of the models. It was found that students who expressed an interest in a policing career at the onset of the study displayed a greater …

Using Imagery To Predict Self-Confidence And Anxiety In Young Elite Athletes, Leisha Strachan Jan 2004

Using Imagery To Predict Self-Confidence And Anxiety In Young Elite Athletes, Leisha Strachan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As elite sport participation by children is growing (Smoll & Smith, 1996), it is important to study the psychological development of these athletes. Imagery is one strategy that may be used by young athletes in controlling arousal levels in competition (Weiss, 1991). Although there has been a great deal of research examining the use of imagery by adult athletes (Hall, 2001), there have been fewer studies investigating how imagery is related to competitive anxiety and self-confidence in young elite athletes (c.f, Vadocz et al., 1997). The purpose of this study was to examine how much imagery use predicts self-confidence and …

Characterization Of Mammalian Wdr1 During Dynamic Actin Rearrangement Events., Tenley E. Noone Jan 2004

Characterization Of Mammalian Wdr1 During Dynamic Actin Rearrangement Events., Tenley E. Noone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The actin cytoskeleton functions within processes such as cell extension, migration, and neurogenesis; yet the mechanisms of actin regulation are not completely understood. WD repeat proteins (WDR1) have recently been shown to interact with actin and regulate cortical actin dynamics through interactions with cofilin in a number of species. However studies on mammalian WDR1 have not been reported. Further studies in chick systems have also indicated several cofilin-independent functions of WDR1 within cytokinesis and cell migration. We investigated the human homologue of yeast WDR1 and identified the expression of two isoforms, a full length 60 kDa protein and an N-terminal …
