This presentation discusses the origins of gender association with the color pink. It attempts to provide history on its masculine origin and its transition into a feminine indicator of gender. Through examples in popular culture, medicine, and the economy it describes the role that pink has played for women and men and how the meanings assigned to it have shifted over time.

Heavy metal music is experienced as a vibrant and empowering global community, but its history, structure, and practice reflect and recreate larger patterns of masculine hegemony within the metal world. As the metal ethos is centered around the practice and affirmation of social transgression, some are pushing the boundaries of metal itself to become a vehicle for critical social discourse around structural inequalities, including gendered hegemony.

Although the acceptance rates of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) athletes is growing in society, the gap of understanding athletes in this community is apparent. Previous research has found LGB athletes perform at a higher rate if they are surrounded by those who are supportive and understanding of their perceived lifestyle. Breaking Down Binaries in a Binary World: An Athletic Experience, is a 2-year project to increase knowledge, awareness, and education for collegiate coaches to provide a safer environment for LGB athletes and their straight-ally counterparts.
