The Sedimentology And Geomorphology Of Rock Avalanche Deposits On Glaciers, Dan H. Shugar, John J. Clague Dec 2011

The Sedimentology And Geomorphology Of Rock Avalanche Deposits On Glaciers, Dan H. Shugar, John J. Clague

SIAS Faculty Publications

This article describes and compares the deposits of four large landslides on two glaciers in Alaska using field mapping and remote sensing. Digital image analysis is used to compare the sedimentological characteristics of nearly 200 000 individual surface blocks deposited by three landslides at Black Rapids Glacier in 2002. The debris sheets of one of the three landslides on Black Rapids Glacier and a landslide emplaced on Sherman Glacier in 1964 are also investigated. The three landslides on Black Rapids Glacier have undergone little post-depositional modification by glacier flow, whereas the Sherman Glacier landslide has been transported supraglacially up to …

Being A Positive Bystander: Male Antiviolence Alliesã• Experiences Of "Stepping Up", Erin A. Casey, Kristin Ohler

Social Work & Criminal Justice Publications

As bystander approaches become increasingly prevalent elements of sexual and domestic violence prevention efforts, it is necessary to better understand the factors that support or impede individuals in taking positive action in the face of aggressive or disrespectful behavior from others. This study presents descriptive findings about the bystander experiences of 27 men who recently became involved in antiviolence against women work. More specifically, we describe the consistency with which respondents actively intervene in the speech or behavior of others, the strategies they use, and the factors they weigh as they deliberate taking action. Respondents report a complex and interrelated …

Do Ethical Preferences Differ Depending On The Type Of Product? Implication For Csr Communication, Gautam Agarwal Jul 2011

Do Ethical Preferences Differ Depending On The Type Of Product? Implication For Csr Communication, Gautam Agarwal

Academic Conference on Good Business

This study will use ranking methodology to examine consumer preferences with respect to ethical and social issues relating to different products. Research has shown that consumers’ attitudes towards ethical and social issues are dependent on the product in question. It is thus important that the communication of CSR activities is based on those social product features that are relevant to the consumer. In this paper I will categorize products based on the results of consumer preferences with respect to ethical and social product features. The paper will also segment consumers based on their attitudes towards social and ethical issues. This …

Resource Quality Or Competition: Why Increase Resource Acceptance In The Presence Of Conspecifics?, J. M. Davis, C. R. Nufio, D. R. Papaj Jul 2011

Resource Quality Or Competition: Why Increase Resource Acceptance In The Presence Of Conspecifics?, J. M. Davis, C. R. Nufio, D. R. Papaj

SIAS Faculty Publications

Some animal species increase resource acceptance rates in the presence of conspecifics. Such responses may be adaptive if the presence of conspecifics is a reliable indicator of resource quality. Similarly, these responses could represent an adaptive reduction in choosiness under high levels of scramble competition. Although high resource quality and high levels of scramble competition should both favor increased resource acceptance, the contexts in which the increase occurs should differ. In this paper, we tested the effect of social environment on egg-laying and aggressive behavior in the walnut fly, Rhagoletis juglandis, in multiple contexts to determine whether increased resource …

Thinking Practice: The Social Work Integral Model, Michelle Garner Jul 2011

Thinking Practice: The Social Work Integral Model, Michelle Garner

Social Work & Criminal Justice Publications

Social workers are bound by the mission, values, and ethics of the National Association of Social Workers. Yet a broad, transtheoretical model accounting for these core principles and guiding identification of clinically and ethically sound daily praxis decisions is lacking in the field's literature and practice wisdom. Such a model could aid in assuring dependably sound social worker actions; socialization of colleagues; clearer guidelines for teaching, supervision, and ethical review of peers; and accreditation of educational programs. The Social Work Integral Model (SWIM) emerged from field practice and scholarship for instructional use and addresses this conceptual gap. Further, congruence of …

Land Classification Surrounding Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Washington, Danielle Dahlquist Jun 2011

Land Classification Surrounding Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Washington, Danielle Dahlquist

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Following the eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18th 1980, the ecosystem of Spirit Lake was dramatically altered and, since then, there has been a significant increase in the amount of primary productivity in the south end of the lake. The focus of this research is to identify land cover types surrounding Spirit Lake which, in the future, could be used to identify possible nutrient point sources flowing into surface waters entering the lake. The watershed pouring into the lake is covered by nitrogen-fixing vegetation that could potentially be contributing to the increased productivity. The work completed for …

Toxic Release Facilities Analysis In The Southern Puget Sound Region, Niki Hung Jun 2011

Toxic Release Facilities Analysis In The Southern Puget Sound Region, Niki Hung

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Through energy consumptions, recycling, and different kinds of operations, numerous facilities are disposing and releasing a significant amount of chemicals every day. Within all those chemicals, some could be functioned as fertilizers while most are toxic, threatening both the environment and people’s health. The purpose of this project is to find out the areas with relatively serious toxic concentration in the south part of the Puget Sound region (Pierce, King, and Kitsap County), as well as who are the most affected people in those areas. The general public who are interested in environmental issues might get the idea of …

The Role Of Sediments And Aquatic Plants In The Nutrient Budget Of Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Wa, Laura Alskog Jun 2011

The Role Of Sediments And Aquatic Plants In The Nutrient Budget Of Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Wa, Laura Alskog

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens caused the bathymetry of Spirit Lake to change drastically, resulting in an increase in surface area and a decrease in average depth. Subsequently, Spirit Lake is experiencing an increase in productivity. This analysis examines concentrations of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus obtained from sediment samples collected over the summer of 2010, as well as aquatic plant height data, in order to identify sources of the lake’s increasing productivity. The results of these analyses will be used as part of a larger nutrient cycling model examining changes in the lake over time.

Depression In Pierce County, K.D. Carlyle Jun 2011

Depression In Pierce County, K.D. Carlyle

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:This project was thought up through my interest in Psychology. Since I cannot actually map physical locations of where depression comes from, I was interested in possible demographics that could cause (not always does) depression. I was able to compile a list of contributing demographics through a literature review. Through my literature review, demographics that were highlighted were that of socioeconomic status or social standing (class). Those with a lower SES were more likely than those who had a higher SES for depression. The purpose of this research was to be able to identify areas within Pierce County that …

Ideal Apartments For International Students In University Of Washington, Tacoma, Sing Wong

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:

Beginning a new journey as an international student in a foreign country is no easy task, the same story applies to the international students in University of Washington, Tacoma. Yet, due to current inadequate supply of student housing units and the lack of a domestic host family housing program, international students in UW, Tacoma face even harsher challenges when looking for a place to live. Without many options, most international students would, therefore, choose to rent apartment units that are within reasonable proximity to the campus and other amenities as their homes. However, many international students might be unfamiliar …

The Torture Debate: What The Scholars And The Intellectuals Are Saying, Dieudonné Balla Apr 2011

The Torture Debate: What The Scholars And The Intellectuals Are Saying, Dieudonné Balla

Global Honors Theses

In the aftermath of the Abu Ghraib investigation and the 2009 CASUSS report on post-9/11 interrogation practices, the question of state-sanctioned torture has become the subject of much public and scholarly debate. In this thesis, the author examines three arguments in support of lawful torture: Alan Dershowitz’s Law of Necessity and the concept of “torture warrants,” Michael Walzer’s “problem of dirty hands,” and Richard Posner’s notion of Constitutional interpretation in times of emergency.

Pathways To Global Remediation: A Study Of Group Identity And Global Consciousness, Lamont Dewayne Green Apr 2011

Pathways To Global Remediation: A Study Of Group Identity And Global Consciousness, Lamont Dewayne Green

Global Honors Theses

This study investigates the problematic global conditions giving rise to the global citizenship movement. The dearth of empirical evidence examining the relationships between global citizenship identification and global consciousness led the researcher to examine correlations between global consciousness and group identities. Participants--undergraduates from the Social Work, Nursing, Business, and Global Honors departments at the University of Washington Tacoma--completed an online survey that included two standardized measurements: 1) the cultural intelligence test (CQ) that measures attitudes and 2) the Global Awareness Profile (GAP) that measures knowledge. Findings suggested that the best indicator of knowledge and attitudes conducive to global consciousness was …
