Advancing Agroecological Agroforestry: A Vermont Participatory Storytelling And Story Mapping Project, Sydney Blume May 2023

Advancing Agroecological Agroforestry: A Vermont Participatory Storytelling And Story Mapping Project, Sydney Blume

Food Systems Master's Project Reports

Agroforestry is the intentional integration of trees into agricultural landscapes. Advancing agroforestry has the potential to support just food system transition, but it must take direction from traditional approaches (culturally-embedded, millennia-old agroforestry practices in forest ecosystems) and agroecology (the movement, science, and practice for just and sustainable food and agricultural systems). An agroecological approach to agroforestry is essential to avoid agroforestry replicating the logics and harms of industrial agriculture and to encourage learning from traditional agroforestry practices, and likewise, traditional approaches to agroforestry can support a transformative agroecological transition through redesign of agroecosystems and shifting perspectives and ethics. This paper …

Seed & Story Conservation: A Rooted Historical Documentation And Analysis Of Living Seed Stories In The Us Northeast, Celia Luanna Nesbitt Apr 2023

Seed & Story Conservation: A Rooted Historical Documentation And Analysis Of Living Seed Stories In The Us Northeast, Celia Luanna Nesbitt

Food Systems Master's Project Reports

Often a neglected item in our current industrialized food system, seed is now typically seen as a commodity. Agrobiodiversity is in decline with diverse crop varieties being lost from cultivation and memory, further threatening levels of biodiversity. Research indicates that seed systems are crucial for the conservation of crop diversity and local adaption of cultivars. Globally, people are working to grow and share seeds that support seed production based around the premises of community-based production and (agro)biodiversity. This project and paper draw attention to the regional seed work in the US Northeast. Through a participatory approach, and an active participation …

Consider The Lunch Lady: Examining Assumptions To Create A Paradigm Shift Within School Lunch, Molly E. Duff Apr 2023

Consider The Lunch Lady: Examining Assumptions To Create A Paradigm Shift Within School Lunch, Molly E. Duff

Food Systems Master's Project Reports

Changing the school food system requires that we critically examine our existing assumptions about how this system works. Currently, school food mirrors our larger food system as it is both highly processed and highly consolidated (Gaddis, 2019). Further, school food reflects larger societal assumptions around issues of social welfare and racial equity as a system that leaves many undernourished and wanting (Levine, 2008). Engaging critically with these assumptions is an essential step to dissecting the paradigms that shape our systems. Ultimately, dismantling these paradigms is what creates deep change (Meadows, 1999). To challenge my own assumptions around how school food …

Master's Project: Impacts To Natural Resources And The Natural Environment From Large-Scale Solar Facilities In Vermont: An Analysis Of Public Utilities Commission Documents, Peter T. Malicky

Rubenstein School Masters Project Publications

Renewable energy deployment and conserving biodiversity are both related to mitigating and preventing the worst effects of climate change. These issues require careful consideration of land use and the consequences associated with land use choices. Large-scale ground-mounted photovoltaic solar energy is a promising clean energy technology, as it can be flexibly deployed, produces low lifecycle carbon emissions compared to other energy sources, and is cost competitive. However, questions remain about how large-scale solar will affect ecological functionality of the Vermont landscape. This report evaluates how the Vermont Public Utility Commission, the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, and other parties to …

The Effect Of Tryptamine Producing Bacteria On Gut Motility In Mice, Emilia Sofia Norberg Jan 2023

The Effect Of Tryptamine Producing Bacteria On Gut Motility In Mice, Emilia Sofia Norberg

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

It has become increasingly clear that there is bidirectional communication between the microbes that exist in the lumen of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and the nervous system. Research within the last 20 years has revealed GI bacterial metabolites to have a significant effect on gut motility, and some of these actions involve influencing serotonin signaling in the epithelial layer of the intestines. Serotonin, abbreviated as 5- HT, has many functions within the gut including propulsive and segmentation motility, vasodilation, and epithelial cell secretion. There are several bacterial species that have been discovered to synthesize one of 5-HT’s precursory molecules, including …

Vermont Public Schools’ Water Tap Lead Exposure: A 2017 – 2021 Spatial Analysis, Logan Solomon Jan 2023

Vermont Public Schools’ Water Tap Lead Exposure: A 2017 – 2021 Spatial Analysis, Logan Solomon

Environmental Studies Electronic Thesis Collection

Vermont’s Act 66 law requires all taps in Vermont’s public schools to be tested for lead. This study uses GIS to analyze public school test results from the first round of testing in order to discover data patterns and examine if lead exposure is an environmental injustice. The results indicate that lead distribution is not an environmental injustice and that Vermont’s testing level for remediation has resulted in most taps containing lead not being replaced, leaving children’s health at risk. Recommendations are provided to inform state decision makers and maps are generated to offer context to the public. The study …

Assessing The Drivers Of Legacy Phosphorus Loading And Distribution In Shallow Eutrophic Lake Sediments And The Impacts Of Intervention, Ashton P. Kirol Jan 2023

Assessing The Drivers Of Legacy Phosphorus Loading And Distribution In Shallow Eutrophic Lake Sediments And The Impacts Of Intervention, Ashton P. Kirol

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

The eutrophication of freshwater lakes from excessive nutrient runoff leads to decreased water quality and worsening cyanobacteria blooms. Water quality improvements in shallow eutrophic lakes can be delayed by decades due to the seasonal recycling of legacy phosphorus (P) enriched lake sediments, even when external nutrient loads are addressed. It is critical to understand the drivers of internal P loading to suppress this source of P through intervention to meet water quality goals. This study contrasts two shallow eutrophic systems, Lake Carmi and Missisquoi Bay in Lake Champlain, impacted by legacy P loading driven by the occurrence of low dissolved …

Community Transitions Of Care For Hospital Readmission Prevention, Lauren Fedorka Jan 2023

Community Transitions Of Care For Hospital Readmission Prevention, Lauren Fedorka

College of Nursing and Health Sciences Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Project Publications

Background: Transitions of Care (TOC) occur whenever an individual moves from one healthcare setting to another. Older adults are higher utilizers of healthcare services, including inpatient and emergent visits, than the general population (Tian, 2016), and thus experience more TOCs. Due to risk of poor outcomes at discharge from the hospital, rehospitalizations are a concern. Standardized TOC protocols have been shown to be beneficial in reducing rehospitalizations for this vulnerable population.

Purpose: Use current best practices to design and implement TOC for a rural community organization to reduce unintended rehospitalizations for older adults.

Methods: Best practices in TOC were …

An Ill-Suited Memorial? Nazi Atrocities In Publications On The American Right, 1930-1985, Sandor Farkas Jan 2023

An Ill-Suited Memorial? Nazi Atrocities In Publications On The American Right, 1930-1985, Sandor Farkas

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

From 1930 to 1985, reactions to Nazi atrocities in the Saturday Evening Post, Wall Street Journal, and National Review represent a sampling of the American political right’s understanding, memory, and use of the Holocaust. A touchstone for evil in American culture and politics, few scholarly works have explored the origins of the Holocaust’s outsized role in American political discourse, and fewer have seriously considered the American right’s role in this evolution. Nazi atrocities assumed their role in American politics because the novelty of Nazi crimes against Jews and their post-war consequences received persistent media attention. On the American political right, …

Distinguishing Different Types Of Childhood Maltreatment On Resting-State Connectivity Networks During Emerging Adulthood, Zoe Morris Feldman Brier Jan 2023

Distinguishing Different Types Of Childhood Maltreatment On Resting-State Connectivity Networks During Emerging Adulthood, Zoe Morris Feldman Brier

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Childhood maltreatment is a major public health concern and is associated with both psychological and brain changes in adulthood. Conceptualization of childhood maltreatment can be categorized along two axes, threat and deprivation, each of which can be associated with varying outcomes of psychopathology and brain changes. The brain is organized into broad connectivity networks, including the Salience Network (SN), the Default-Mode Network (DMN), and the Central Executive Network (CEN). Prior work has examined the relationship between these networks and psychopathology associated with childhood maltreatment, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).

This study assessed the differences …

Surface Temperature Measurement Fidelity In High Enthalpy Plasma Test Facilities, Owen Plante Jan 2023

Surface Temperature Measurement Fidelity In High Enthalpy Plasma Test Facilities, Owen Plante

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

The classification and study of thermal protection systems (TPS) relies heavily on the accurate measurement of surface temperature. The best way to measure surface temperature in ground test facilities is through optical pyrometery due to the non intrusive nature of this method. Optical pyrometric devices use the emission of a greybody curve to calculate temperatures. These devices are left susceptible to parasitic radiation coming from the plasma generated in ground test facilities. The parasitic radiation comes from the emission lines of the test plasma in the investigation region of the devices. The parasitic radiation from the plasma and short comings …

Roles Of Mtorc1 And Mtorc2 In Epilepsy And Network Changes Induced By Pten Loss, Erin R. Cullen Jan 2023

Roles Of Mtorc1 And Mtorc2 In Epilepsy And Network Changes Induced By Pten Loss, Erin R. Cullen

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Gene variants that hyperactivate the mTOR signaling pathway are a major cause of treatment-resistant epilepsy. The mTOR pathway influences neuron function through two distinct complexes, mTORC1 and mTORC2. Pten loss of function (LOF) hyperactivates both mTOR complexes, and is thus a useful model for testing the effects of independent mTORC1 or mTORC2 hyperactivity on epilepsy and underlying neuropathology. Here, we evaluated the impact of genetic inactivation of the mTOR complexes in two mouse models of Pten LOF-driven epilepsy. In a germline GFAP-driven Pten LOF model targeting neurons in the dentate gyrus and cerebellum, a mild epilepsy phenotype was not rescued …

Forest Management In The Context Of Global Change: Impacts Of Disturbance, Adaptive Management, And Invasive Species On Northeastern Forests, Jennifer Santoro Jan 2023

Forest Management In The Context Of Global Change: Impacts Of Disturbance, Adaptive Management, And Invasive Species On Northeastern Forests, Jennifer Santoro

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Climate change is predicted to have variable and uncertain effects on forested ecosystems globally. In the northeastern US, natural disturbances have historically been a central driver of forest successional dynamics, but as climate warming is projected to alter the frequency and severity of these events, post-disturbance management strategies to sustain biodiversity and ecosystem services must adaptively change to promote forest resilience. A suite of adaptive silvicultural actions has been proposed to promote forest resilience in the face of uncertainty, but due to the multi-decadal scale of forest management, initial field experiments are only beginning to show results. To address these …

Runx1 Loss Leads To An Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition In Breast Cancer By Regulating Target Gene Expression., Dorcas Lohese Jan 2023

Runx1 Loss Leads To An Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition In Breast Cancer By Regulating Target Gene Expression., Dorcas Lohese

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. Due to the various advancements in treatment, the five-year survival rate is greater than 90% among women with non-metastatic breast cancer. However, among patients with metastatic breast cancer, the five-year survival rate quickly drops to 22%. Recognizing early signs of metastasis is essential for targeting cancer before it disseminates. The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is hypothesized to be a vital process for large-scale cell movement by disrupting cell-cell adhesion, allowing metastatic breast cancer cells to become more migratory. The progression of breast cancer EMT involves …

Alef Is A Key: Belonging And Resistance In Mena Women’S Fragmentary Narratives, Joy Mazahreh Jan 2023

Alef Is A Key: Belonging And Resistance In Mena Women’S Fragmentary Narratives, Joy Mazahreh

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, “troubled” narratives written by women from the Middle East and North Africa tell stories of home and belonging. None of the narratives are whole, consistent, or ideal. They all shift and break into fragmented stories as a mechanism to remember things past, survive in the present, and hope for the future. As personal as these narratives are, the resistance relies in reading them as political texts. In each chapter, I view narrative shifts, such as voice changes according to story spaces, or anachronisms (as analepsis or prolepsis) as changes in form that reflect meanings of belonging and …

Race, Fantasy & Enjoyment, Edwin Owusu Jan 2023

Race, Fantasy & Enjoyment, Edwin Owusu

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Why has the institution of race remained resilient given what we know about its detrimental impacts? Why do we enjoy race and who has access to that enjoyment? Is black trauma endemic to this enjoyment and can blackness be divorced from it? I hypothesize that we live in an episteme that has transitioned from physiological need to surplus enjoyment. This enjoyment has allowed humans to conceptualize their relations beyond the physical and necessary. Racial enjoyment is psychical because it involves how we enjoy and not how we know (enjoyment v. knowledge). There is a collective investment in race that subtends …

The Future Of The Air: H. G. Wells And The Aviation Of Utopia, Noah Slowik Jan 2023

The Future Of The Air: H. G. Wells And The Aviation Of Utopia, Noah Slowik

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

As one of the founders of modern science fiction, H. G. Wells was obsessed with aviation. For its main research question, this thesis investigates, what is the significance of aviation in the work of Wells? Firstly, I analyze Wells’s initial mixed feelings toward the potential of aviation. On one hand, he demonstrated the positive possibility of flying machines in “A Story of the Days to Come” (1899); on the other, he reflected a more pessimistic attitude through his negative predictions in Anticipations (1901) and A Modern Utopia (1905). Secondly, Wells conveyed an entirely dystopian outlook toward the future of flight …

Differences In Attentional Processing Of Sexual Stimuli For Men With Varying Degrees Of Sexual Arousal Function, Robert Brandon Wyatt Jan 2023

Differences In Attentional Processing Of Sexual Stimuli For Men With Varying Degrees Of Sexual Arousal Function, Robert Brandon Wyatt

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Sexual arousal problems remain prevalent for many men despite the availability of medications such as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PED5) inhibitors used to treat sexual dysfunction. Theoretical models that attempt to explain the underlying psychological mechanisms of sexual dysfunction highlight the important role of attention during sexual arousal (e.g., Barlow, 1986; Janssen, Everaerd, Spiering, & Janssen, 2000), but fail to integrate a contemporary understanding of attentional processes (i.e., preattentive and selective; Broadbent, 1958, Driver, 2007; Triesman, 1969) to explain why individuals with and without sexual arousal problems direct their attention toward or away from a given stimuli during sex. Moreover, these …

The Effects Of Processed Seaweed Supplements On Rumen Fermentation And Methane Production In Vitro, Ashley Winter Driemel Jan 2023

The Effects Of Processed Seaweed Supplements On Rumen Fermentation And Methane Production In Vitro, Ashley Winter Driemel

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Seaweed supplementation in ruminants is not a novel practice but has recently regained popularity due to promising nutritional benefits for the animal as well as the presence of bioactive compounds that reduce methanogenesis within the rumen. It is important to broaden our assessment of different seaweed species and identify key seaweed species that have the most efficient CH4-reducing potential, do not negatively impact rumen fermentation parameters, and are abundant enough to meet consumer demand. Chapter 1 of this thesis reviews the published literature relevant to seaweed supplementation in ruminants, with a focus on the comparison of seaweed processing methods utilized …

How To Analyze Parental Conversation Online: A Computational Stack For Studying Vaccine Hesitancy., Carter Willets Ward Jan 2023

How To Analyze Parental Conversation Online: A Computational Stack For Studying Vaccine Hesitancy., Carter Willets Ward

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Despite national and international organizations such as the CDC and WHO recognizing the value of vaccines and their importance in addressing public health concerns, there has been a decline in coverage for even the most established vaccines over the past three years. The global COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to this decline via decreases in medical resource accessibility and an increase in vaccine hesitancy. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, WHO had recognized vaccine hesitancy as one of the top ten threats to public health. In the present work, we introduce a background account of (1) vaccine hesitancy and (2) anti-vax activism, …

An Analysis Of A Linear Algebra Based Group Key Exchange Protocol, Annie Zhang Jan 2023

An Analysis Of A Linear Algebra Based Group Key Exchange Protocol, Annie Zhang

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Group key exchange protocols are used to establish session keys, which can then be used as encryption keys to set up secure channels of communication, between more than two parties simultaneously. Many different group key exchange protocols exist and require security proofs in order to determine the strength of the protocol and answer the following questions: does the protocol provide authentication, and if so, to what degree? Does the protocol provide key secrecy? In this thesis we examine a particular group key exchange protocol that we call the \textit{vector space projection protocol} as first described in “A Group Key Establishment …

The Overpressurization And Surface Contamination Of On-Demand Pressure Systems, William Harvey Jan 2023

The Overpressurization And Surface Contamination Of On-Demand Pressure Systems, William Harvey

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

With advances in space technology, the use of satellites in commercial and academic settings have progressed immensely. The increase in satellite usage has created a need for on-board propulsion systems that provide in-space mobility. Satellites often require maneuvers such as collision avoidance, de-orbiting, and changing orbital positions. These maneuvers help to reduce space clutter but also enable longer and more capable missions. However, chemical propulsion systems present a number of challenges, particularly during launch. Satellites require the use of large rockets to deliver them in space and the addition of a propulsion system means that the rocket will be carrying …
