Determination of the load carried by each bearing in a railcar system is crucial to the integrity of the railroad industry. Locally, giant reed (Arundo donax L.), a woody grass native to the Mediterranean, adversely impacts riparian ecosystems in southwestern United States by aggressively displacing their native flora and fauna. Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies are increasingly competing with subtractive methods, and there are promising applications for additive technologies that are hybrid with traditional manufacturing methods. Poor surface roughness of additive manufactured parts continues to be a major challenge especially for advanced functional parts. In this study, effect of processing parameters are evaluated, optimized and verified by using the Box–Behnken design of experiment method. The results, for the first time, reveal that surface remelting has the potential to become a high speed approach for improving the roughness of non-horizontal surface of additive manufactured parts.

This study presents and describes the development of a fully autonomous vehicle cruise control system covering the vehicle dynamics and control design needed to simulate such system. It encompasses obstacle avoidance, intelligent-and-optimal lane change as well as adaptive behavior. This study offers a comprehensive two-dimensional cruise control with three degrees of freedom and it is designed using active obstacle avoidance controllers. It also includes optimized fuzzy logic for optimal vehicle trajectory and an extensive array of control law methodology. The end work shows a complete simulation run using MATLAB and Simulink.

The purpose of this research is to investigate muscular ligament and joint contact forces produced during squat jump exercise. An inverse dynamics, two dimensional, leg model is used to describe the motion in the sagittal plane. The lower extremity model includes two bones, tibia and femur, tibio-femoral ligaments, and muscles such as quadriceps, hamstrings, and gastrocnemius. The ligaments are anatomically modeled as nonlinear strings, but the femoral condyle is modeled as a circle and the tibial plateau as a straight line. Self-assembly is the process by which simple, unorganized components autonomously combine to form larger, more complex structures. Researchers are turning to self-assembly technology for the design of ever smaller, more complex, and precise nanoscale devices, and as an emerging fundamental tool for nanotechnology.

We introduce the robust random number generation problem, the problem of encoding a target string of bits in the form of a bit string pad, and the problem of shape replication in various models of tile-based self-assembly. Also included are preliminary results in each of these directions with discussion of possible future work directions.

A new process for the fabrication of a microchannel scaffold with microwires for peripheral nerve applications is presented. This microchannel scaffold implemented between the ends of nerves, the axons of which regenerate through microchannel in scaffold and fixed microelectrodes. This device is entirely handcrafted using commercially available materials such as microwires, PDMS film, liquid PDMS, dental cement, and epoxy glue. Improvement on the sub-tropical plant Jatropha curcas may increase the use of this drought tolerant oilseed crop for the production of biodiesel. One of the methods for enhancing a species is through genetic manipulation of the protoplast. Isolating protoplasts is challenging and culturing has many obstacles similar to those seen in tissue culture, such as oxidative browning. Successful isolation of J. curcas leaf protoplasts resulted in an average of 3.23 x 106 viable protoplasts/mL. However, protoplasts diminished within 2 days after culturing. In this thesis, experimental evaluation of the effect of virtualization on the availability of servers has been performed under Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks for popular server Operating Systems such as Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 R2 virtualized using Hyper-V. A comparative evaluation of the performance of the servers before and after virtualization under DDoS attacks indicates that after virtualization there is a considerable increase in the vulnerability to attacks and a decline in the performance of the virtualized server compared to when the server is not virtualized.

The hydrodesulphurization (HDS) of crude oils is an important industrial process to remove sulfur from fuels. In this study, DBT was used as a model compound to study the removal of sulfur from a decahydronaphthalene solution. The catalyst was synthesized through low pressure pathways in the absence of H2S. All the synthesized catalyst were investigated using a combination of SEM, RAMAN spectroscopy, and XRD. The materials were studied for their ability to remove DBT from solution and the reaction products were analyzed.
