Physical Health, Transportation And Sustainability Impacts Of Shared Micromobility Services, Yi Wen
Physical Health, Transportation And Sustainability Impacts Of Shared Micromobility Services, Yi Wen
Doctoral Dissertations
Electric scooters (e-scooters) have reached a wide popularity since launch in 2017. Key questions around their mobility, safety and sustainability impacts have been raised and partially addressed by the existing literature. However, the physical activity aspects of riding an e-scooter have not been assessed. We recruited 20 subjects from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville network to measure the physical and muscle activity of riding an e-scooter, in comparison to walking and driving, the two common substitutes by e-scooters on a designated route. We used Cosmed Fitmate PRO for the physical activity measurement and the Delsys EMGworks Acquisition Software for the …

Hidden Consequences: Examining The Impact Of Nil On Athlete Well-Being, Hailey Harris, Natasha T. Brison, Marlene A. Dixon
Hidden Consequences: Examining The Impact Of Nil On Athlete Well-Being, Hailey Harris, Natasha T. Brison, Marlene A. Dixon
Journal of Applied Sport Management
With the NCAA's NIL policy changes, many athletes will likely need to solve the issue of brand management, with many of them assuming the role themselves. Taking on this role will likely lead to even more investment in their athlete identity (i.e., role engulfment), which has negative consequences for the athlete (Hatteberg, 2020). Guided by the literature on role engulfment, this article investigates the hidden effects NIL may have on collegiate athletes and their well-being, along with various branding and legal implications.
The Economics Of Global Saturated Fat Intake And Implications For Public Health, Amelia Grace Ahles
The Economics Of Global Saturated Fat Intake And Implications For Public Health, Amelia Grace Ahles
Masters Theses
An increasing prevalence of obesity and diet-related diseases has heavily contributed to increased economic challenges including decreased economic productivity and increased healthcare expenditures globally. Saturated fatty acids (SFAs) are readily found in foods and have been linked to increased risk for diet-related diseases leading to increased mortality and morbidity worldwide. Identifying factors that influence SFA consumption is essential to government intervention strategies to improve dietary choices, decreasing obesity and diet-related diseases. The goal of this study is to estimate the relationship between saturated fat consumption and economic factors such as nation income, food prices, and socio-demographics globally. SFA intake data …

Criminal Justice Contact, Racial Discrimination, And Health, Tanner Kilpatrick
Masters Theses
A sizeable body of research has shown that contact with the criminal justice system increases the risk for a variety of physical and mental health problems. However, less is known about mechanisms through which criminal justice contact increases the risk for health problems, particularly for women. This study extends research on criminal justice contact and health by examining the mediating role of racial discrimination. I hypothesized that racial discrimination would mediate the association between criminal justice contact (arrest, jail or prison) and mental health (depressive symptoms, overall mental health) and physical health (overall general health, doctor diagnosed health issues), and …

Psychometric Properties Of Three Common Depression Measures In Breast Cancer Patients With Major Depressive Disorder, Audrey Ashton File
Psychometric Properties Of Three Common Depression Measures In Breast Cancer Patients With Major Depressive Disorder, Audrey Ashton File
Doctoral Dissertations
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the United States and MDD is the most common mental health problem in women with breast cancer. There is lack of research on measures of depression in this population. This study examined the psychometric properties of three commonly used depression measures, the BDI-II, CES-D, and HRSD, with clinically depressed breast cancer patients (n = 127). Findings revealed the measures displayed good distributional characteristics, internal consistency, and convergent validity. Discriminative validity with the BAI was not demonstrated, however, and confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the existing models of these …
The Effects Of Trade Competition On Health, And Determinants Of Workplace Behavior, Thomas Clayton Mcmanus
The Effects Of Trade Competition On Health, And Determinants Of Workplace Behavior, Thomas Clayton Mcmanus
Doctoral Dissertations
My dissertation consists of three essays related to workplace behavior. In the first paper, we design a controlled laboratory experiment to study image motives in a setting where decisions signal intelligence. The experiment results show that in some settings social scrutiny can discourage individuals from making choices that signal their intelligence, despite evidence that the signal was privately valuable. In the second paper, we study the effect of Chinese import competition on occupational safety and health at US manufacturers. We find that a change in US trade policy and Chinese import shocks significantly increases worker injury and illness rates in …
Two Essays On The Application Of Ordered Probability Model, Jun Zhang
Two Essays On The Application Of Ordered Probability Model, Jun Zhang
Masters Theses
This thesis includes two essays on health issues of mental health and household food insecurity, and how socioeconomic, demographic, and other factors may influence these health issues are explored. The first essay investigates the effects of regular physical activity and socio-demographic factors on depressive symptoms for both men and women. Data for this study come from the 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and an ordered probability model with binary endogenous physical activity is developed to accommodate the ordinal nature of depression outcomes. Results suggest that physical activity is most beneficial for mild and moderate depressed individuals and the …

Greenway Design And Planning For Healthy Communities: Case Study Of Knoxville, Yilin Shi
Greenway Design And Planning For Healthy Communities: Case Study Of Knoxville, Yilin Shi
Masters Theses
Abstract
Greenway design and planning have become a multi-functional, multi-objective approach to address social, cultural and ecological concerns. Traditional greenway design and planning have focused more on ecological, historic and recreational values. However, the current focus of greenway planning is also shifting to community health, which includes both physical health and emotional health. This thesis focuses on physical health. This concern arises out of observations on obesity and physical inactivity as two of the most serious health problems in the United States which greatly threaten the quality of life in the country. Greenways can help address the issues of obesity …

Our aim in this study was to explore HIV/AIDS peer counseling from the perspective of women actively engaged in this work within the context of a community-based program in rural areas of the southeastern United States. Based on this research we suggest that the embodied work of HIV/AIDS peer counselors is constructed around their personal identities and experiences. This work involves gaining entry to other HIV-positive women’s lives, building relationships, drawing on personal experiences, facing issues of fear and stigma, tailoring peer counseling for diversity, balancing risks and benefits, and terminating relationships. Peer counselors recognize the personal and collective value …
