Genetic Diversity And Relatedness Within And Among Northern Bobwhite Coveys In South Texas, Katherine S. Miller, Leonard A. Brennan, Randy W. Deyoung, Fidel Hernández, X. Ben Wu

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Although biologists have studied northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) genetic diversity and population structure, there is little known about the genetic diversity, structure, and relatedness of their winter coveys. Both flexible mating strategies and the fall shuffle may have implications for inbreeding and genetic diversity in northern bobwhite populations. Our goal was to determine genetic diversity and relatedness for coveys on a private ranch in Jim Hogg County in South Texas. During the 2010–2011 and 2011–2012 hunting seasons, 96 northern bobwhites were sampled from 29 coveys. We analyzed 11 northern bobwhite microsatellite DNA loci, measured genetic structure with an …

Distance Sampling To Assess Post-Grazing Northern Bobwhite Recovery In South Texas, Rachel A. Smith, Leonard A. Brennan, Fidel Hernández, Humberto L. Perotto-Baldivieso

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) require habitat structure with substantial grass cover for nesting, predator avoidance, and thermal refuge. During the past 2 decades, many land managers have reduced or completely eliminated livestock across South Texas rangelands with the goal of improving bobwhite habitat. How bobwhites respond to post-grazing habitat recovery is unknown. Our objective is to investigate how bobwhites respond to the vegetative changes following removal of grazing. Our study is being conducted on a private ranch in Jim Hogg County, Texas and involves 3 different areas of post-grazing habitat recovery: a 1,246 ha area rested from grazing …

Northern Bobwhite Home Range Sizes And Movements In South Texas, Katherine S. Miller, Fidel Hernández, Leonard A. Brennan, Randy W. Deyoung, X. Ben Wu

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) often have relatively small home ranges (1-km radius); however, occasional long-distance movements also have been recorded, which may help maintain connectivity and genetic diversity within and among populations. We quantified movements of radiocollared northern bobwhites on the King Ranch in South Texas, USA. For each bird we determined core area, home range (fixed kernel), mean movement rate, and maximum distance moved. We compared movements across age, gender, precipitation trends, and plant communities using Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests. Almost half (44.7%) of the birds moved >400 m (max. distance moved) and 46 (16%) moved …

Spatial Analysis Of Predator Abundance And Northern Bobwhite Nest Success In Southern Texas, Ian C. Trewella, Chad J. Parent, Fidel Hernandez, Fred C. Bryant

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) have low nest success across their geographic range, and predation is the primary cause of failure. We evaluated the influence of relative abundance of predators on northern bobwhite nest success. We used data from a long- term radiotelemetry study conducted on 3 sites (800 ha each) in Brooks County, Texas during 2000–2007. We located bobwhite nests (n 1⁄4 456) using radiotelemetry and estimated Mayfield nest success each year. We also estimated relative abundance of nest predators using scent stations (400 3 400 m grid/site) during the nesting season (May–Aug). We developed a gradient map of predator …

Northern Bobwhite Population Structure And Diversity In Texas And The Great Plains, Katherine S. Miller, Leonard A. Brennan, Randall W. Deyoung, Fidel Hernandez, X. Ben Wu Jul 2017

Northern Bobwhite Population Structure And Diversity In Texas And The Great Plains, Katherine S. Miller, Leonard A. Brennan, Randall W. Deyoung, Fidel Hernandez, X. Ben Wu

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Many northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations have been experiencing severe declines. This decline is of concern to wildlife biologists, landowners, and legislators due to the popularity of this species as a game bird. Previous molecular genetic analyses for populations inhabiting intact habitats in South Texas indicate the northern bobwhite population in this region is genetically diverse with low population structure. W[e] assessed whether landscape affects the population structure and diversity for northern bobwhite in Texas and the Great Plains. We extracted DNA from hunter-harvested northern bobwhites from 19 sites in South Texas from 2004 to 2010. We analyzed 7 microsatellites …

Field Application Of Sustained-Yield Harvest Management For Northern Bobwhite In Texas, Joseph P. Sands, Matthew J. Schnupp, Trent W. Teinert, Stephen J. Demaso, Fidel Hernandez, Leonard A. Brennan, Dale Rollins, Robert M. Perez Jul 2017

Field Application Of Sustained-Yield Harvest Management For Northern Bobwhite In Texas, Joseph P. Sands, Matthew J. Schnupp, Trent W. Teinert, Stephen J. Demaso, Fidel Hernandez, Leonard A. Brennan, Dale Rollins, Robert M. Perez

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Sustained-yield harvest (SYH) is considered a potentially viable strategy for managing harvest of northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus). However, application of SYH has not been evaluated for northern bobwhites. We evaluated the application of using SYH as a harvest management strategy for bobwhite during the 2007 2008 and 2008 2009 hunting seasons in 2 ecoregions of Texas (Rolling Plains, South Texas Plains). We collected field data at 3 study sites/ecoregion (900 1,900 ha each; 2 hunted sites and 1 control) to estimate 4 demographic parameters (fall and spring density, overwinter survival in the absence of hunting, and harvest rate). We used …

Summer Whistle Counts, Roadside Counts, And Fall Abundance Of Northern Bobwhite, Chad J. Parent, Fidel Hernandez, Mick Hellickson, Marc Bartoskewitz, Matthew J. Schnupp Jul 2017

Summer Whistle Counts, Roadside Counts, And Fall Abundance Of Northern Bobwhite, Chad J. Parent, Fidel Hernandez, Mick Hellickson, Marc Bartoskewitz, Matthew J. Schnupp

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Reliable information on fall abundance of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) is important for proper harvest management. Aerial surveys can provide reliable estimates of abundance, but can be expensive. Alternatively, whistle counts and roadside counts are indices of abundance that are relatively inexpensive, simple, and commonly used by biologists. We compared whistle and roadside counts conducted during summer to fall relative abundance (coveys/km) estimates obtained using helicopter surveys. All data were collected at the pasture scale (mean 1⁄4 1,716–2,762 ha) on the King Ranch (334,000 ha), which is comprised of 4 divisions across South Texas. Average survey effort was 245 km/year …

Long-Term Climate Trends And Northern Bobwhite Populations In South Texas, Jeffrey J. Lusk, Fred S. Guthery, Markus J. Peterson, Stephen J. Demaso Jul 2017

Long-Term Climate Trends And Northern Bobwhite Populations In South Texas, Jeffrey J. Lusk, Fred S. Guthery, Markus J. Peterson, Stephen J. Demaso

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Because climate change and its associated weather changes may influence population trends of birds, we analyzed northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus; bobwhite hereafter) age ratios and abundance in relation to climate trends during 1908-1997 in south Texas. Weather variables included regional mean temperature maxima for June, July, and August, and precipitation totals for autumn (Sep-Nov), winter (Dec-Feb), spring (Mar-May), and summer (Jun-Aug). Long-term temporal trends for these weather variables were estimated with a linear regression. Yearly weather data were used to predict bobwhite age ratios (juv/ad in autumn and winter) and abundance between 1908 and 1997 using neural network models. We …

Fine Scale Influence Of Weather On Northern Bobwhite Abundance, Breeding Success, And Harvest In South Texas, Robert M. Perez, James F. Gallagher, Michael C. Frisbie

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Weather plays a substantial role in annual changes in populations of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) within and among ecological regions. Few studies have tested this relationship within the confines of specific sites. We examined the fine scale influence of annual (12-month), seasonal (6-month), and monthly Modified Palmer Drought Severity Indices (PMDI) and raw precipitation on abundance, breeding success, and harvest of northern bobwhites on 2 sites in south Texas. We used 18 years (1984–01) of roadside census, juvenile : adult ratios, and harvest records from the Chaparral Wildlife Management Area (CWMA) in La Salle County and 15 years (1984–99) of …

Survival And Habitat Of Pen-Raised Northern Bobwhites At Camp Robinson Wildlife Demonstration Area, Arkansas (Poster Abstract), Matthew D. Lewis, Steven Fowler, Chris Kellner, James C. Bednarz

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Post-release survival of pen-reared northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) is often extremely low. Although predation is usually assumed to cause low survival rates, very little detailed research has been conducted into cause-specific mortality of pen-reared bobwhites in natural settings. Further, little is known about habitat selection by pen-reared bobwhites, and the relationship between habitat and survival. We report results based on 110 radiomarked bobwhites out of 2500 banded and released at Camp Robinson Wildlife Demonstration Area in Arkansas. Birds were released at 125 sites in coveys of 20 birds per site. Release sites were ranked based on habitat quality. In addition, …

Survival And Flight Characteristics Of Captive-Reared And Wild Northern Bobwhites In Texas, Robert M. Perez, Don E. Wilson, Karen D. Gruen Jul 2017

Survival And Flight Characteristics Of Captive-Reared And Wild Northern Bobwhites In Texas, Robert M. Perez, Don E. Wilson, Karen D. Gruen

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Introductions of captive-reared northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) to bolster native populations have been largely unsuccessful. We compared the survival and flight characteristics of game-farm (n 46), first-generation (F1) (n = 48), wild translocated (n = 45), and wild native (n = 50) northern bobwhites. In November 1993, all birds were radio-collared, leg banded, sexed, and aged. Birds were then released on a study area in Brooks County, Texas in groups of about 15, 1 bird at a time. Upon release, the direction of departure, speed, and time required to reach cover were recorded. The mean flight speed and distance flown …
