A Comparison Of The Pattern Of Involvement Of Degenerative Joint Disease Between An Agricultural And Non-Agricultural Skeletal Series, Lorna Kathryn Collins Pierce Dec 1987

A Comparison Of The Pattern Of Involvement Of Degenerative Joint Disease Between An Agricultural And Non-Agricultural Skeletal Series, Lorna Kathryn Collins Pierce

Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigates the differences in the pattern of involvement of osteoarthritis between two groups of prehistoric American Indians who lived in a similar ecosystem and climate, separated by time and cultural activities. The purpose of this biocultural investigation was to determine if there was a difference in the patterning of the degenerative lesions in the two skeletal series and if that suite of characteristics would assist in determining possible aetiological factors and culturally determined activities.

Two archaeological skeletal series were utilized, Averbuch (40DV60), of middle Tennessee, to represent an agricultural site outside the mainstream of the late Mississippian period …

Managerial Feedback Seeking Behavior In Relation To Feedback Discrepancies, Source Attributes, And Goal Characteristics, Ann Mogan Herd Dec 1987

Managerial Feedback Seeking Behavior In Relation To Feedback Discrepancies, Source Attributes, And Goal Characteristics, Ann Mogan Herd

Doctoral Dissertations

Historically, feedback has primarily been studied as an organizational resource, due largely to the performance-improving effects of feedback. Recently, however, researchers have suggested that feedback may also serve as an individual resource for employees. Specifically, it has been suggested that individuals within organizations may actively seek feedback to help them attain their personal goals. Although employee feedback seeking behavior is, to date, a relatively new area of inquiry, research has shown that employees’ feedback seeking behavior is related to such factors as goal value and importance, and negative performance beliefs. Other factors that would seem to be related to individuals’ …

Growth Characteristics Of Yerinia [I.E., Yersinia] Enterocolitica In Selected Food Products, Mohammed Kazem Amin Dec 1987

Growth Characteristics Of Yerinia [I.E., Yersinia] Enterocolitica In Selected Food Products, Mohammed Kazem Amin

Doctoral Dissertations

Growth characteristics of five strains of Yersinia enterocolitica in pasteurized milk inoculated with either 10 or 1,000 CFU/ml Y. enterocolitica and stored at 4° C for up to 21 days was determined. All five strains of Y. enterocolitica competed very well with background microflora of pasteurized milk and reached level of log 5.0 to 8.0 CFU/ml after 14 days at 4° C. The initial level of inoculation had little or not effect on the total number of Y. enterocolitica after 14 or 21 days in pasteurized milk at 4° C. An improved isolation technique based upon the …

Sensory Characteristics And Lipid Composition Of White Amur (Ctenopharyngodon Idella) Fed Different Diets, Hussain M. Bakir-Al-Hakkak Dec 1987

Sensory Characteristics And Lipid Composition Of White Amur (Ctenopharyngodon Idella) Fed Different Diets, Hussain M. Bakir-Al-Hakkak

Doctoral Dissertations

Two fish diets, trout chow pellets (A) and alfalfa pellets (P), were evaluated as to their effects on growth, lipid level and compo-sition, fatty acid (FA) composition of polar and neutral lipids, and sensory characteristics of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). During the 6 month feeding experiment, fish fed A gained 661 g/fish compared to 358 g for fish fed P. In addition, total lipid con-tent in fish fed A increased from 1.84 to 3.72% in 4 months time, but remained approximately the same in fish fed P (P< 1.0%) across feed-ing times. Three phospholipid classes: sphingomyelin (6 to 13%), lecithin (55 to 63%), and cephalin (25 to 35%) were affected by feed-ing time (P<0.05). Nineteen FA were found in the phospholipids: 14:0, 16:01, 16:0, 16:1, 18:0, 18:1, 18:11, 18:2ω6, 18:3ω6, 18:3ω3, 20:1, 20:2, 20:3, 20:4ω6, 20:5ω3, 20:5ω6, 22:5uω3, 22:6ω3, and 24:1. Significant differences between diets were found in the percentages of 14 acids, and feeding time also significantly affected the levels of these acids. All of the previous FA except 16:01 plus 9 additional 16:11, 17:0, 17:1, 20:0, 22:1, 23:0, 24:0, 24:4 and an unknown, were found in the neutral lipids. Significant differences between diets were found in the percentages of 18 acids in the neutral lipids, and feeding time significantly affected the levels of 19 of the acids. Compared with fish fed P, fish fed A had higher levels of monounsatur-ated FA (MONO) and lower levels of omega-6 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) in both neutral and polar lipids; there were higher levels of saturated FA (SAT) and omega-S PUFA in the phospholipids but lower levels of SAT and omega-3 PUFA in the neutral lipids. Compared to P, A had lower percentages of SAT (40.9 vs. 51.1), omega-6 PUFA (12.1 vs. 18.2), and omega-3 PUFA (15.8 vs. 24.7) and a higher percentage of MONO (31.0 vs. 5.3). There was no significant difference between the flavor of grass carp fed P (3.6) and that of catfish (3.7), but the panel (n = 93) scored the flavor of grass carp fed A (3.4) lower than that of catfish (P<0.06). They also found no significant differences in texture among the three fish samples. Compared with catfish acceptability (3.6), grass carp fed P tended to have lower acceptability (3.4), but grass carp fed A a significantly lower acceptability (3.3). The main reason given for scoring the acceptability of grass carp lower than that of catfish was the presence of small bones in the fillets. This indicates that either grass carp must be bigger at market-size than those in this study (1585 g) or the bones must somehow be removed.

Maxillary Suture Obliteration: A Method For Estimating Skeletal Age, Robert Walter Mann Dec 1987

Maxillary Suture Obliteration: A Method For Estimating Skeletal Age, Robert Walter Mann

Masters Theses

The palatal processes of the adult human maxilla consist of two horizontally directed bones of quadrilateral shape situated posterior of the nasal fossae. In the early stages of morphogenesis, these palatal folds are vertically oriented and separated by the developing tongue. Between the eighth and eleventh weeks the fetal tongue descends allowing alignment and midline fusion of the palatal processes of the maxilla. At birth the palate is composed of four bones joined by broad serrated sutures. With increasing age the suture gaps narrow, fuse, and ultimately obliterate.

The purpose of this study is to develop a method of estimating …

The Effects Of Fungal-Infested Fescue On Hormonal Secretions And Ovarian Development In The Beef Heifer, Pamela Pecon Mckenzie Dec 1987

The Effects Of Fungal-Infested Fescue On Hormonal Secretions And Ovarian Development In The Beef Heifer, Pamela Pecon Mckenzie

Masters Theses

A fungal endophyte, Acremonium coenophialum, associated with tall fescue is known to produce factors which are toxic to grazing livestock. Cattle which ingest the affected fescue may exhibit depressed physical condition, reduced reproductive performance as well as decreased pro- lactin (PRL) levels. Decreased PRL release has been shown to delay puberty in some species and may be the cause of reduced reproductive performance in animals grazing infested fescue. Four experiments were conducted on heifers grazing tall fescue pastures with varying degrees of infestation to determine the effect of treatment (fungal endophyte level) on the ability of the hypothalamus, pituitary and …
